Transcript
Paul Scheer [00:00:00] Put on your backwards neon hats, grab a Labatt and get ready to lambada. We saw Ski School. So you know what that means.
Intro Song [00:00:59] [Intro Song]
Paul Scheer [00:01:05] Hello people of Earth and people of Telluride, Colorado! We are live at the Sheridan Opera House to talk about the best ski movie ever made. Ski School, a movie that seems to be made in the eighties but was made in 1991. Now, if you’ve not seen Ski School, don’t worry about it. It is about a bunch of hard partying skiers versus a bunch of preppy douchebags. And you all know how that goes. For those of you who are listening, I’m still out of breath. I did not account for the altitude in my working out there for a second. I get it back and I’m back. Look, there’s a lot of ridiculous things in this movie, but the most ridiculous thing is that they think Whistler is the best mountain. And I want you to join me right now. Fuck, Whistler. I say fuck, you say Whistler. Fuck–
Crowd [00:02:06] Whistler!
Paul Scheer [00:02:06] Fuck–
Crowd [00:02:08] Whistler!
Paul Scheer [00:02:08] That’s the kind of energy we need. We are going to party. Everyone will be naked by the end of the show. Let’s break down the film Ski School. And I need to do that with my co-host. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mr. Jason Mantzoukas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:02:31] What’s up, jerks?! How we doing, Telluride?
Intro Song [00:02:37] I’ll be honest. You said maybe the best ski movie ever? Maybe the best movie ever. Correct me if I’m wrong. Is this movie eligible to be best picture this year?
Paul Scheer [00:02:48] I feel like every year it should be in there.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:02:50] It does. It needs to be in the conversation. This was incredible. Full stop. I loved it. Full stop.
Paul Scheer [00:03:01] This is a movie that played on HBO every day. Like from my childhood. I feel like this is nonstop.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:10] Is that right?
Paul Scheer [00:03:10] Oh, I feel like I saw.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:11] I missed that.
Paul Scheer [00:03:11] Moments of this movie my entire life. There’s two of these movies. This movie was so successful. Which is odd because I think it only made $18,000 in the theater.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:23] But I think it only cost like $400 worth of labatts.
Paul Scheer [00:03:29] So much labatts.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:30] The they were like, we’ve got labatts, so people were like, we’ll shoot a movie. Fuck yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:03:35] Labatts is in? Let’s do it. All right. So let’s, let’s keep on bringing out.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:42] If it was Telluride, don’t you feel like it would be like instead of Labatts, just cocaine?
Paul Scheer [00:03:48] Well, that’s the new Telluride movie, Cocaine Bear, it was made right here. Right? That’s. Well, there’s one person on this show who loves Labatts more than anyone else. It’s my other co-host. Please welcome, June Diane Raphael.
June Diane Raphael [00:04:05] Hello. Paul. Hello. Telluride. Telluride. I’ve been here for two days and I have not been in one indoor snowball fight. No one’s shown me their boobs and I feel disappointed.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:27] Same! Hard same. Actually, soft same.
Paul Scheer [00:04:35] I couldn’t get a read on you. I was watching you watch the movie and I couldn’t tell where you were at. But where do you fall? Is it the best movie ever made?
June Diane Raphael [00:04:44] I loved it. I really loved it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:49] I did, too. Thank you.
June Diane Raphael [00:04:50] Yeah. And I was so excited that there is a Ski School 2.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:56] Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:04:56] And when do we get to watch it?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:58] And I’m also going to talk, I want to talk a lot about the spiritual other sequel or a prequel to this movie, which is Summer School.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:07] Summer School.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:07] Which also has the lead of this movie. Dean Cameron plays Chainsaw in that movie. Plays the exact same character in this movie. And it’s incredible.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:19] So there’s a whole canon. There’s a whole. Yeah, like.
Paul Scheer [00:05:22] Canon of schools. One would argue that there’s no schooling in this movie called Skip School. No one takes a lesson.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:29] I didn’t know that, Dean. I didn’t know Dean Cameraon was supposed to be a teacher. Or like a senior level person.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:35] It wasn’t until, honestly, the last 5 minutes where I was like, are those other people in Station 8, students?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:41] Yes.
Paul Scheer [00:05:43] Wait, they’re students?
June Diane Raphael [00:05:44] Yes.
Paul Scheer [00:05:46] I thought they are all teachers.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:46] They are enrolled in ski school. They are in school.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:53] They are there to learn how to ski.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:56] Everybody except for Dean Cameron and Reed are children enrolled in ski school.
Paul Scheer [00:06:02] All right. We need to bring out–.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:03] You didn’t watch it enough!
Paul Scheer [00:06:05] I’m going to tell you something. I watched interviews about it and they asked Dean Cameron and Fritz, are you guys teachers? And they’re like, “Yeah, we’re all teachers.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:14] No, no, I think Ed and.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:18] No, because what’s this guy, the main guy from Montana… Wait a second.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:22] Does anybody here understand it? Because it’s the same rules as Telluride. How does ski school work?
Paul Scheer [00:06:27] I think it’s like a division somebody. Yeah. Let’s bring it out, before we go into the economics of this school. Because there is a principle, I think. Well, we’ll break it all down. What we can see, because, I mean, look, I think they had the title, they had the script, they had the cast, and none of them were on the same page. But that was great. Please welcome our very special guest tonight. He’s somebody who always says to me, It’s not how far you go, it’s how you go far. Please welcome Rob Huebel.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:59] Yes.
Rob Huebel [00:07:07] Guys. It’s important for me to explain to you where I watched this movie an hour ago. I made the grave error of watching this movie in the lobby of the Madeleine Hotel.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:07:27] Oh, no.
June Diane Raphael [00:07:28] Oh, no.
Rob Huebel [00:07:30] Because I’m here with my wife and my daughter. You realize who is in kindergarten? And I thought, well, I don’t want them to see all the boobs. So I’ll go down to the lobby. The Madeleine Hotel is filled with children. So I’m a guy by himself sitting in the corner, watching nonstop boobs.
Paul Scheer [00:07:56] I mean, there are so many. This is the only movie I’ve ever seen where the opening title credits have boobs in it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:04] Now, can I ask you this? Were you like, I fucking did it. I’m living the dream. I skied all day. I’m man spreading watching boobs on my phone.
June Diane Raphael [00:08:16] Now I need to know, Rob. Were you, like, tucked away in a corner like, was there a wall directly behind you or you were in the lobby?
Rob Huebel [00:08:25] June, the whole time, I was trying to look and see if there was a mirror behind me. Like, I kept pulling my laptop, but then I looked like I was trying to jack off. Then I tried to be like, “Oh, I don’t care. Like, I’m a cool dad also.” And then all these little boys are like, What’s that guy watching? And I was like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:44] Oh, God. Meanwhile, you’ve got a gondola blanket on your lap. That’s right, Telluride. I know about your town. That’s a joke line that only works here.
June Diane Raphael [00:09:00] Oh, my God. You are definitely on multiple lists right now.
Rob Huebel [00:09:05] I will not be invited back to the Madeleine Hotel.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:08] Can I talk about how I watched this? I watched this movie. We’re staying in a condo here, and I turned on the TV. Went to the Amazon Prime app, and someone had already logged in at some point. So I watched Ski School on their account. And I love, I love the idea of somebody going to watch Bosch or something and be like, “Honey, did you watch Ski School?”.
Paul Scheer [00:09:36] After they watch Bosch, it’s like “You might like Ski School 2. Or Boob School 3.”.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:43] “I want to talk about this porno you watched last night.”
Paul Scheer [00:09:47] “Honey, I swear I didn’t watch Ski School.”.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:49] “Why? Why would I watch Ski School? I was with you.”
June Diane Raphael [00:09:51] Well, I texted Paul about 4 hours ago when we were, when we were finished skiing, and I said I have to start watching a Ski School. Where do I find it? Like, is it. What platform can I find it on? And did you watch it on YouTube and Paul texts back furiously. “It’s everywhere. It’s available everywhere.” I was like, okay, man.
Paul Scheer [00:10:13] One of the few movies that’s on every platform. They were like, “Hey, if you just let us hang out at your offices, we’ll give you the rights to air this movie on your streaming service.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:10:22] I believe if I watched Ski School on Netflix, it would be a totally different movie just also called Ski School. Like, give it to me.
Paul Scheer [00:10:30] Let’s I’ll give you a little sample. This is like our first scene. This kind of sets up the entire plot.
Movie Audio [00:10:34] Our. Hi, Reed. I read.
Movie Audio [00:10:41] Shut up. I say this is your last year and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Movie Audio [00:10:47] Too late, Reed. I’ve already put in a motion, an elaborate plan, a series of events diabolically designed to rid this Mountain of you and your satanic presence forever.
Movie Audio [00:10:57] Before you think about getting off this mountain. You’re going to have to win first.
Movie Audio [00:11:03] Oh, okay.
Paul Scheer [00:11:06] That’s the plot. That is the entire plot.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:11] Raise your hand if you’ve been in one of these competitions before. It must be a regular thing here.
Rob Huebel [00:11:19] Ski instructors often compete for the ownership of the mountain.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:24] Okay, wait. But, Rob. Who did you think was an instructor and who did you think was a student?
Rob Huebel [00:11:30] June, that’s the first thing in mind. By the way, I’m in the lobby writing furiously, watching boobs like taking notes on the boobs. But that’s like the first thing I wrote.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:41] I looked over your shoulder before, and your phone just had 34 double D’s. 32 C.
Rob Huebel [00:11:47] Fake. Fake. Real. Fake. Side boob, doesn’t count.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:52] Your notes were just uploaded to Mr. Skin.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:58] Mr. Skin likes the vacation in Telluride.
Rob Huebel [00:12:00] Busted. Literally, the first thing I wrote down and the last thing I wrote down. Because at some point I was like, “These guys are students on vacation?”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:10] It’s basically Animal House in the mountains.
Paul Scheer [00:12:13] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:13] So much so that they have the meeting with Dean Wormer, who is like, you’re kicked out and they’re like, JK, we’re coming back, you know? So it was like they were Section 8 seemed to be like dismissible in some way.
Paul Scheer [00:12:26] Well it seemed to me that they were all instructors. That’s why they could be kicked off the mountain.
Rob Huebel [00:12:31] They lived together in like a clubhouse.
Paul Scheer [00:12:34] It’s a closet.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:35] I’m only gonna call Dean Cameron, Chainsaw, because that’s all I wrote in my notes. And when I’m looking at my phone, it’s just notes. I’m not like looking at my phone. But when Chainsaw says to him, These kids paid money and they’re going to have to go back to their towns and having not graduated ski school or whatever, I think those other people Ed, the AV guy, Fitz, they’re all students. And I think Chainsaw and Reed are the instructors. They’re the teachers.
Paul Scheer [00:13:03] All right, let’s ask the audience, people who’ve seen it, who, by a round of applause, are they all instructors? (No claps) Wow. Well, there we go, then. A round of applause. Are they all are some of them instructors and most of them students. (Claps) Wow.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:17] Wow. Here’s what’s interesting, though. Okay. So I can understand that a movie about like, oh, these instructors are like the bad boys of ski school and they just like to party and they think that partying is is just as important as actually learning.
Paul Scheer [00:13:32] Well skiing is partying.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:32] I’ve always said that. I’ve always said that. But Station 1 and all the other stations also don’t seem to be teaching the sport of skiing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:43] They are doing, they’re doing more. They show them like in the gym, working out. They’re more committed to the sport.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:54] They’re definitely working out, but again, nobody’s skiing.
Rob Huebel [00:13:55] Yes, and at one point the guy’s bench pressing. And I’m like, those are the muscles you use when you’re skiing.
Paul Scheer [00:14:02] I just still couldn’t get over that, like, the cool or the preppy people were in tuxedos. Yeah, like they’re going to local bars in Tuxes?
Rob Huebel [00:14:11] Dude, let’s take a poll. How many people in Telluride own a fucking suit? Zero.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:19] But that’s only because there’s no Whistler assholes here. Tuxes are for Whistler assholes. Fuck you, Canada!
Rob Huebel [00:14:26] By the way, total sidebar. I got engaged to my wife in Whistler. And I was so ashamed watching this movie. I was like, Oh, my whole marriage is a sham.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:39] It is, Rob.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:39] And you got engaged at Whistler because you both love this movie.
Rob Huebel [00:14:44] Reed was doing my wife and I had, like, you know.
Paul Scheer [00:14:51] My biggest issue with this movie was this. It’s a snow movie, a ski movie, right? But there is no fucking snow. I pulled a lot of images of it. Look at this.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:03] It is summer.
Paul Scheer [00:15:04] It is summer. There is so much no snow.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:10] And so green. It’s lush.
June Diane Raphael [00:15:11] Flowers.
Paul Scheer [00:15:16] There’s nothing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:17] Well, those are winter flowers. They bloom in February. This is what it’s like in the middle of Whistler.
Paul Scheer [00:15:25] Not even a touch of snow on the ground. I mean, this is and this is supposed to be at the height of ski season, by the way. I also don’t know how this works, but it seems like the announcer for the opening of the movie is just also setting up the entire movie.
Rob Huebel [00:15:44] He’s the announcer for this ski competition, but also all of the exposition for the movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:49] And it seems to be played on speakers throughout the entire mountain. Everywhere you are, you can hear him. And when you, when they focus on him wearing the headphones and the microphone, his mouth is not moving.
Paul Scheer [00:16:02] Oh, because they use the same shot every single time.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:05] It’s just ADR. It’s just the lines recorded afterwards that are just dumped on there. Like people won’t know what’s happening in Ski School. We have to have the announcer explain the big race.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:15] Also I can’t help but wonder, like, can women go to ski school?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:19] In this movie, June? No!!
Rob Huebel [00:16:22] The women in this movie are treated like garbage.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:25] They have no agency at all.
Rob Huebel [00:16:27] And also, let me just point out, there are not this many women in any fucking ski town. There are not women walking around in bikinis.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:38] Here are the two ways I know this is not a documentary. Too many women. Too many women for a Ski Town. And the men are having protected sex. Dudes are using, are preemptively putting condoms on.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:54] Left and right.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:56] In Telluride? Come on.
Paul Scheer [00:16:57] By the way, I don’t know. I mean, I guess I was going to say I don’t know what the opposite of a lubricated condom is, but what they use that movie felt– it was like (squelch noise). It was so. It was so aggressively dry.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:13] You do foley work for pornos, right?
Paul Scheer [00:17:14] I do a little bit. Yeah, like (fart noises).
Rob Huebel [00:17:18] Really good.
Paul Scheer [00:17:25] All right. So you were talking about the ADR. The ADR in this movie, obviously, every time we hear the announcer, we see this same shot here, which is just this shot. They just cut to that over and over again.
Rob Huebel [00:17:39] No snow. Look in the corner. No snow. It’s like the people in Whistler were like, “Well, you can shoot the movie here, but like in July.” You know.
Paul Scheer [00:17:47] So they shoot this movie. But this whole movie is full of ADR, which is this basically, they record this sound later, so much so that the main character, Dean Cameron, his name was Dave Marshall. And at a certain point in the movie, they go, We’ve got to change it to Dave Marshak. So they start to redub his name. So throughout the movie, when the leader board is going on, Dave Marshall is moving up and down. But Dave Marshall isn’t a character in the movie anymore. Dave Marshak is. And so they go in and ADR Marshak like a million times.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:18] Listen, he is more of a Marshak, though.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:20] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:18:21] Than a Marshall.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:22] By the way, that’s a win for the movie. I think that’s a good thing. Yeah, well done, movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:31] Here’s a question about station 1 and Reed. So is Reed also a filmmaker?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:39] No, I think he just was cutting, like a promo for himself.
Rob Huebel [00:18:43] Yeah, there’s a great promo.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:45] He has a full editing bay.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:46] Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:47] A full editing bay.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:48] Oh, yeah yeah.
Rob Huebel [00:18:50] Hidden in his hair.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:51] Multiple screens.
Paul Scheer [00:18:51] No that’s the bar.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:54] All ski instructors have the ability to edit ski movies, right? That’s how that’s how Warren Miller started. If I’m not mistaken.
Paul Scheer [00:19:01] He is renting out a bar to show off his great new movie, a documentary about himself.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:05] So that bar just happens to have an editing bay?
Paul Scheer [00:19:08] Oh, yeah. I guess there’s a lot going on.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:11] There’s a full AV room in that bar?
June Diane Raphael [00:19:12] That’s what I’m saying.
Paul Scheer [00:19:13] That bar is like most people in Telluride. That’s got to serve a lot of different purposes. It’s a bar. It’s a video recording studio. It’s a restaurant. It’s everything.
Rob Huebel [00:19:22] The other thing this movie does over and over and over that blew my mind, was the throwing of beers.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:28] I loved it. I loved it.
Rob Huebel [00:19:30] And the catching the beers. Which is so hard. It’s like, (Whoosh!).
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:34] That means section 8 is constantly walking around with multiple cases of beer because throughout any given night or whatever, they’re just like, throw, catch.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:44] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:19:45] And they also.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:46] And then just a cool look.
Paul Scheer [00:19:47] They’re surrounded by beers. It seemed like one day Bacardi got involved because all of a sudden there’s this one scene where Bacardi rum is just prominently displayed, but they are throwing beers all across the way. But these guys, they love to party. And I’ll show you a little clip of them talking about how they love the party. Here is here they are right here.
Movie Audio [00:20:07] Anybody have anything else to add? Johnny? Let’s win the race tomorrow. Of course. Absolutely. Win the race. Any ideas on how we are going to win?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:16] He keeps looking in the camera.
Movie Audio [00:20:19] Party!
Paul Scheer [00:20:26] And that’s the only way that we see that they train for the race. That’s it. That is the way that they win the race is by doing a slight dance.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:35] But you seem mad at them. Are you saying your team Reed?
Paul Scheer [00:20:38] No, I’m just saying.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:40] It sounds like you and Huebel are team Reed.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:42] Here’s the thing I’m kind of team Reed as well, because as somebody you know, Paul and I watch this as we’re, you know, we are in ski school, we are with instructors. We are in Telluride learning how to ski. And so to see the sport treated so carelessly and recklessly was scary.
Rob Huebel [00:21:00] Now, let me ask you a question. You guys were in ski school all day today.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:04] Yes.
Rob Huebel [00:21:04] If your ski instructor said, “Hey, do you want to come back to my clubhouse and party for the whole week?”
June Diane Raphael [00:21:14] I think, you know, Rob, our ski instructor, is 82 years old.
Rob Huebel [00:21:18] Please tell this story.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:20] He was an 82 year old. A lovely, Spike, are you here?
Rob Huebel [00:21:23] The best.
Paul Scheer [00:21:24] The best. Spike is the best.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:27] Spike is the best.
Audience Member [00:21:28] Spike is my dad.
Paul Scheer [00:21:35] Wait.
Rob Huebel [00:21:36] Baby Spike. Baby Spike.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:38] I love Spike.
Paul Scheer [00:21:39] Are you the standup comedian? Oh, you are. He talked about you. We talked a lot about you.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:45] Yes, we did.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:47] Are all of Spike’s kids here?
June Diane Raphael [00:21:51] Just one. Well, I can’t. This is not Spike’s story. I really don’t think it is.
Paul Scheer [00:21:58] It might have been Spike’s story.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:00] In 91?
June Diane Raphael [00:22:03] Well, okay, so Rob wants me to tell you it’s something that happened with Spike yesterday. So. So Spike said it was as we were all leaving the lesson. Multiple, you know, students were about to walk away and Spike said, you know, “I’m 82.” And I said,.
Paul Scheer [00:22:23] Well he sets it up, he goes, he goes like, “I want you to enjoy skiing.”
June Diane Raphael [00:22:27] Lifelong passion.
Paul Scheer [00:22:29] “And take it from me. I know because I’ve been doing it for 82 years now.” My mind automatically went to, Wait. So you’re older than 82? Because I didn’t assume he was skiing when he was born. I was like, He must be like 90. But that’s where I’m at.
June Diane Raphael [00:22:44] I said to both Spike and the group as a little like, we’re all friends now. We’ve spent 2 hours together. I said, Well, Spike, you don’t look a day over 81. Thanks you guys. And Spike just blinked.
Paul Scheer [00:23:02] No one else laughed either.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:04] No one laughed. And then everybody just sort of turned.
Paul Scheer [00:23:08] Everyone went off in a different direction. Silently.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:13] So if you could just relay the message, that was not an insult. It was my attempt at just that nice kind of moment for us as a group. And it really fell flat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:24] You should have tried throwing a beer at him.
Rob Huebel [00:23:27] Again, not to make this about Spike, but does Spike have any of this in his history? Like did he see these many boobs? Do you think? It your mom’s here, I’m sorry.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:44] Spike’s kids are here. Spike fucks. We know that.
Paul Scheer [00:23:48] His name is Spike.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:51] His name is Spike.
Paul Scheer [00:23:54] His name is Spike. He was the inspiration for the character of Ed, the sex fiend.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:02] Who had to be hypnotized to stop sleeping with women?
Paul Scheer [00:24:05] The only actor that we don’t see sleep with somebody is hypnotized to stop sleeping with someone. It’s like, Hey, that guy fucks too much. We must stop him. And the whole movies he’s like, I just don’t have it in me. Like, his journey is just like. I don’t know why. Because he’s been subliminal.
Rob Huebel [00:24:24] Well, their use of hypnosis is just accepted. This is in the movie. If you don’t remember the guy, Dave, goes around and whispers to people while they’re sleeping, which is not a thing that you do in hypnosis. And he whispers to them, you know, what they need to do to win the contest. So he tells Dave, you are not going to have sex anymore. You’re going to– something like you’re going to get out of your mind and you’re never gonna have–
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:51] He tells the other guy to lose his mind.
Rob Huebel [00:24:55] At one point, he hypnotizes a girl under the door, talking under the door, he’s like, You’re going to have sex with my friend anymore. And it just works. It works.
Paul Scheer [00:25:07] I do want to get into the relationship that these women. There was one moment that I really, I watch again, and I’m not trying to be a perv, even though one of the main characters in this movie is clearly a perv. He’s on roofs. He’s looking through windows.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:17] He’s a creeper peeper. Fitz.
Paul Scheer [00:25:18] Fitz.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:19] And I really want to hear what you’re going to say Paul, but I and maybe you could pull up a picture of Fitz because this occurred to me. Go back, right there. That in the beginning of the movie I was like, Ghislaine Maxwell? And then it was I could see. It was all I could see during the entire movie. It was such a crazy way to watch this.
Paul Scheer [00:25:45] I wanted to show this moment here. I should have cut it as a clip, but it was too weird to me. There’s a moment where this girl’s in a hot tub.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:52] You passed by so many insane moments, so many– That’s wierd. So many insane moments. The lighting is crazy.
Rob Huebel [00:26:02] The sex scenes are upsetting.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:05] The lambada is nuts.
Rob Huebel [00:26:07] Why is there so much lambada?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:09] That was like such a reference at the time.
Rob Huebel [00:26:12] And for real, if a woman is alone in a hot tub. Real question. If a woman is alone in a hot tub, do you just automatically take off your top?
Paul Scheer [00:26:22] This is my question about this. Watch this scene and we’ll talk. Here we go.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:30] Like, he’s like, “I want you to meet Prince Andrew.”
Paul Scheer [00:26:38] This moment of what she’s doing, though, in the hot tub. Who enjoys the hot tub this much? I thought like, okay, well, now she’s taking off her top but this moment here, because she doesn’t know he’s up there yet, does she? Oh, she does.
June Diane Raphael [00:26:56] I think she does.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:58] She’s sussed it out. The first scene he peeps on her, she doesn’t know.
Paul Scheer [00:27:01] But now. But this moment right here, he’s creeping on the roof and she’s writhing in the tub. Watch her just writhing to nothing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:12] I thought somebody was going to come up from underneath the water.
Paul Scheer [00:27:15] That’s what I thought, too.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:17] I for sure thought that’s where this scene was headed.
June Diane Raphael [00:27:19] Listen, when you’re a woman and you’ve not been skiing all day, at the end of the day, you just need to get in a hot tub and you need to just soak those muscles from not skiing.
Paul Scheer [00:27:31] I mean, well, she, you know, she is in a dilemma because she hasn’t decided whether or not she’s going all the way with Reed, the main guy, which also seems like a conversation that you might have like in high school.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:44] I think they’re supposed to be young.
Rob Huebel [00:27:46] I think they’re supposed to be in high school.
June Diane Raphael [00:27:48] Oh, no, no, no, no. Reed is 52.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:51] Yeah. At this moment in time, he could be a local news anchor for all I know. But I believe these are supposed to be young people. I certainly think Fitz is supposed to be in high school.
Rob Huebel [00:28:06] He’s on vacation with his family. His family put him in ski school.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:11] I don’t think this is ski school like ski school up at the mountain. I think they’re at a training, like a boarding school, like a summer camp, but for skiing.
Rob Huebel [00:28:21] That doesn’t exist!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:23] Am I wrong? What is it?
Rob Huebel [00:28:25] Like a college for skiing?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:29] Can somebody explain briefly what this is? Who might know, or is it not a real thing?
Paul Scheer [00:28:34] It doesn’t exist. Section 1 is our main guy.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:37] They were living in, like a ski school.
Paul Scheer [00:28:39] They were living in a janitor’s closet. I mean, look. And then Reed lives in this outfit here. This is Reed.
Rob Huebel [00:28:46] By the way, we’re giving this way more thought than the writers ever did. This was written by an AI chat bot.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:53] By the way. Well done, Chat Bot. Well done.
Paul Scheer [00:28:56] This movie feels like someone was carrying the finished product, to like, “All right, we’re going to release it.” And they dropped it all over the floor. And “I think this thing goes here. I think this one goes here and there.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:09] It’s like right before, somebody had dropped a bunch of scraps of film with boobs in it and they were like, “I guess these all go together.”
Paul Scheer [00:29:17] Like, there’s literally a moment where two characters like Ghislaine has already met the girl in the hot tub, but then they meet at like the cafeteria and it’s like the first time they’ve met. I’m like, Wait, we’ve already seen them together. He’s already spied on her. Like, it just seems like it’s a mess.
June Diane Raphael [00:29:35] Okay, I’m just thinking that maybe because I don’t know where, what kind of schooling you have to go to to become a ski instructor. So maybe this is a school for other instructors. Yes?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:52] People like that?
June Diane Raphael [00:29:54] Is that something?
Paul Scheer [00:29:56] And did you all agree that there were also like six other sections we didn’t see because Section one.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:03] Section one to section eight.
Paul Scheer [00:30:04] Right.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:05] And they keep moving them up on the leader board.
Paul Scheer [00:30:07] So we don’t even know those stories. I mean, ski school three, four, five, six, seven.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:11] Give it to me, please.
Paul Scheer [00:30:13] But check it out. This is what’s going on here with, I just want to show you the work ethic of our character, who I think is more like Spike than our party guys. Here we go.
Movie Audio [00:30:23] Push, push, push, push, push.
Movie Audio [00:30:26] How can you live with those idiots even contend with us?
Movie Audio [00:30:29] That guy was pretty good. How come he’s not skiing with us?
Movie Audio [00:30:33] Shut up, you pussy. How do you expect to impress anybody with the way you looked on the hill today?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:38] I’m 46 years old.
Movie Audio [00:30:41] Cam, you want to get over there and do sets with Derek?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:43] Those gloves.
Rob Huebel [00:30:45] Why is she in a leotard?
June Diane Raphael [00:30:48] Those women will never speak.
Movie Audio [00:30:50] Level eight? What is this, lawn bowling? Well, come on.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:54] What is this? Lawn bowling. Come on.
June Diane Raphael [00:30:58] I mean, why doesn’t he accept Johnny in the beginning of the movie, if that’s his name?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:08] He wants, like, who have you skiied with? Who did you train with?
Rob Huebel [00:31:12] Does every skiier know every other skiier?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:13] I thought he thought Johnny was like a nobody. So he sent him to the rejects. So he accidentally gave the rejects a star.
Rob Huebel [00:31:22] But Johnny shows up with a letter of recommendation.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:24] Which he mocks.
Rob Huebel [00:31:27] Who would write a letter of recommendation?
Paul Scheer [00:31:31] To go to a school to learn to either be an instructor or take classes? Like I didn’t go to ski school to be like, I have a letter from my friend who says I’m eligible to take classes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:42] I feel like it’s college. I feel like the rules are college. You go. You live there.
June Diane Raphael [00:31:48] All you have to do, you don’t need to do an interview. And again, I don’t know that much about skiing, but like, just watch him go down the slopes.
Paul Scheer [00:31:56] No, you have to go and meet him in his office.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:32:00] I agree. There’s no audition. There’s no like, “Oh, go ski. You want to ski? Why don’t you take a run and we’ll evaluate you.” Nope.
Paul Scheer [00:32:07] I mean, I want to show one other thing here too, which is, they are being kicked out. So would it make me believe that there is a dean of admissions here and this guy.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:32:18] This guy’s entire performance is ADR. All of his dialog is done by someone else at another time.
Paul Scheer [00:32:24] You watch it and it will never sync up. Here we go.
Movie Audio [00:32:27] Shut up this time, Marshak, you’ve gone way too far, and I’m giving the board of directors a full report of your conduct.
Paul Scheer [00:32:35] It’s literally like watching like a dubbed Kung Fu film.
Rob Huebel [00:32:39] Is there a board of directors for the Telluride Ski School?
Movie Audio [00:32:44] Skiing naked. The snowballs.
Paul Scheer [00:32:47] First of all, we didn’t see skiing naked. So he’s referencing something that the movie does not release.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:32:51] Release the full cut.
Movie Audio [00:32:53] And you, your unspeakable behavior also. You’re all a bunch of animals and you’re as good as out of here. Because it’s just a simple matter of filing the proper paperwork.
Paul Scheer [00:33:04] By the way, the worst line a villain can have. All I got to do is file paperwork.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:10] Once I find the form I need to fill out. You are dunzo.
Rob Huebel [00:33:15] The best part about this guy is every time they get to him on the mountain, everyone else is bundled up, and he’s wearing like a trench coat freezing his ass off.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:25] Except not because it’s summer.
Rob Huebel [00:33:26] It’s summer time.
June Diane Raphael [00:33:30] I assumed that at the end when we’re sort of building toward the competition, although I guess the competition is really going on the entire time. But I thought, oh, for sure we’re going to see some really cool ski moves. We’re going to see Station one or Station eight kind of outdo each other or foil the other stations, work with ski moves. No, no. They were just like lassoing each other and.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:55] Reed had a grappling hook. Can you do that?
Paul Scheer [00:34:00] The reason why Section eight loses because, they lose because they were horribly beaten. And I put a little montage together. I don’t know how any of this stuff is legal, but take a look.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:15] Why? Why is this possible?
Rob Huebel [00:34:19] This is murder. This is murder.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:31] This is how Whistler competes. They’re dirty.
Rob Huebel [00:34:36] Look at that Spring snow. That’s all just like, this is like late summer snow.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:45] You were the snow consultant on this movie, right?
Rob Huebel [00:34:48] If you’re talking about cocaine. Yes.
Paul Scheer [00:34:51] I will say what’s crazy about this movie is like that you go from the guy running the race kicks off his ski. All right. That makes sense. You know, the next person, his hat is turned backwards. And that’s that’s the thing. It’s like.
Rob Huebel [00:35:05] Dude, I can’t even walk down the street like this. I’m like.
Paul Scheer [00:35:10] They’re running out of ideas as they’re making the movie. Like, no one had a better idea. It was like, Oh.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:17] I would, I would believe if you told me this movie was largely improvised, that they just put everybody together and they’d say some shit.
Paul Scheer [00:35:23] Apparently, one night, Dean Cameron was called up to the directors room. He’s like, “Hey, can you pitch us a bunch of bits that we could just put in the movie?” and he’s like, Yeah, And that’s how the bits of guess whose underwear it is came into the film, which is just a scene where they guess somebody’s underwear. We don’t even know who that person is.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:40] This is a movie that reminds you that in the eighties, because this is an eighties movie to me, all women’s underwear was white. All of it.
Rob Huebel [00:35:50] And huge, huge.
June Diane Raphael [00:35:52] Very large.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:53] Huge and white. That was it. That’s what we’re doing. The woman who’s in a black dress. When she takes the black dress off, she’s wearing white underneath. I was like, what?
June Diane Raphael [00:36:02] I do miss, though, that there’s something very nostalgic to me. And I’m like, you know, bring back a high cut, you know, bring it back. Make it sexy again.
Rob Huebel [00:36:14] Paul, edit this out of the podcast.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:15] These women looked great.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:17] Oh. Bring back everything.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:18] At times, I was like, is she wearing a diaper? I don’t know. But they looked great.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:24] But also bring back diapers.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:26] Bring them back.
Paul Scheer [00:36:29] What if she instead of taking off her underwear, she just unzipped either side like a diaper. Just like flip flop. It just fell to the floor.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:36] Do diapers have zippers now?
Paul Scheer [00:36:37] No, it’s like. It’s like. It’s like. Like a little.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:41] Aquaguard YKK.
Paul Scheer [00:36:46] It drops hard because she did pee in it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:48] Oh, she did?
Paul Scheer [00:36:50] Yeah. She’s got to.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:51] She’s hydrated.
Paul Scheer [00:36:52] Yeah. There’s such a funny moment where she’s, like, flirting. She’s like, “I like to make money.” Like, that’s like it’s. The characters in this movie are so great. She’s going to maybe potentially take over the mountain. I don’t know if that’s not, not necessary spoilers.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:04] I don’t know who that character was.
June Diane Raphael [00:37:06] Never knew who she was.
Rob Huebel [00:37:07] Victoria?
June Diane Raphael [00:37:10] Who is Victoria?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:12] I was like, is she a villian? She arrives so late. She seemed like a femme fatal.
Paul Scheer [00:37:14] Well, in real life, she was the Playboy playmate that they just put to the movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:37:19] Okay?
Paul Scheer [00:37:21] And she was the owner. She’s the new owner. So she’s just a rich woman who’s decided to buy mountains, like people do. They go around from town to town and buy mountains. Bruce Willis did at one point.
Rob Huebel [00:37:32] But Johnny Johnny meets up with her at her house, I guess.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:36] Yeah. She gives him her address or something.
Rob Huebel [00:37:42] And his first instinct when he gets there is my friends are having a party. Do you want to leave and go to my friend’s party and then they have sex on a kitchen table.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:51] Yes. Again, that makes me feel like he’s young. He’s like, “Oh, I don’t know what to do. I got to get out of here.”
Paul Scheer [00:37:59] But then when it is revealed that she is the new owner, she gets this great line here. This is the end of the movie here.
Movie Audio [00:38:06] May I present your new owner.
Movie Audio [00:38:08] The mountain is ours!
Movie Audio [00:38:18] Anybody got a problem with that? Then let’s get naked!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:25] But nobody gets naked.
Rob Huebel [00:38:26] No one gets naked. Shout out to Gordini turtlenecks.
Paul Scheer [00:38:33] Now, that’s how the movie ends with essentially everyone getting on the dance floor. They call it Party Mountain. They’ve changed the name.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:43] By the way, yes.
Paul Scheer [00:38:44] And by the way, I would also argue, I just realized the big flaw in the fact that they’re all children. They’re all drunk at all times and they’re in bars.
Rob Huebel [00:38:52] You have kids. Do they drink?
Paul Scheer [00:38:54] I mean, when they’re skiing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:55] It’s Canada. Right? So the drinking age is like, I don’t know, 14? I don’t know. They’re maniacs up there.
Paul Scheer [00:39:05] I mean, so it really is. I mean, Party Mountain was a real twist.
Rob Huebel [00:39:08] But. But. But what is the actual business transaction that takes place?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:11] How much money?
June Diane Raphael [00:39:13] I don’t know.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:15] How liquid is she to be able to buy, I mean, casually. How much is that mountain? Hundreds of millions of dollars.
June Diane Raphael [00:39:23] Wasn’t she on the, when she first arrives in the limousine? I thought, you know.
Paul Scheer [00:39:27] That’s the guy, I think. She arrives in the convertible. The guy with the dubbed voice is the guy staring out of the. Yeah. When he’s driving around, the guy in the suit is in the limo. She’s always in the convertible, wearing like it looks like a parachute at one point.
June Diane Raphael [00:39:42] The manager of the ski school is driving a limousine.
Paul Scheer [00:39:44] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:44] No, not driving. Passenger in the limousine.
Rob Huebel [00:39:47] Am I mistaken also that the ski, the neon colors in this movie that at one point I used to laugh so hard at. Is that not huge again? Do people not dress like this now?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:57] Oh yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:39:58] Yeah. It’s coming back.
Rob Huebel [00:39:59] Okay.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:00] And by the way, I felt like everybody looked great. Everybody in Section eight looked at every time they cut to Reed and his crew, I was like, Boo. Section eight, dynamite. I was like, give me poppy, crazy, CB jackets, give me all of the nonsense.
Paul Scheer [00:40:15] I mean, I did love the looks and I will tell you. People, and this is why this movie has stayed for such a long time. Now, I guess I do want to just talk a little bit about the lambada. Should we bring back the lambada? This is another improvised moment in the moment.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:29] This blew my mind, rather that they engaged so long in the lambada. A discussion of the lambada.
Paul Scheer [00:40:37] The Lambada is the forbidden dance, which then they kind of. I guess it’s a little bit racist. They say that like this– Well, let you hear it. Here we go.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:46] Oh, wait, You’re saying it’s a little bit racist? Hang on, Paul. What proof do you have for that? If you just rewind four frames.
Paul Scheer [00:40:54] You know.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:59] (Sarcastic) You’re saying that there is casual racism in this movie?
Paul Scheer [00:41:04] A little racism, little homophobia.
Rob Huebel [00:41:07] Unavoidable.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:08] Quite a bit of homophobia. Eighties level homophobia, like outrageous.
Rob Huebel [00:41:14] Crazy homophobia. Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:41:16] But yeah, this is a little racist.
Movie Audio [00:41:17] South Americans who discovered fight fire. That’s hot.
Movie Audio [00:41:22] Hot, hot, hot, hot.
Movie Audio [00:41:28] And that’s how the Lambada came to be.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:43] What? I think I blacked out during that moment. I don’t remember that.
Rob Huebel [00:41:50] Well, the director only does that one time. There’s like a one time flashback to explain the origins of the racist origins of the lambada.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:00] Which is not even the.
Paul Scheer [00:42:02] Dance.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:02] I don’t even understand.
Paul Scheer [00:42:03] They don’t even do the Lambada in the movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:05] It makes no sense. It’s like they thought that the reference alone.
June Diane Raphael [00:42:09] Was enough.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:10] Worth it, that people would watch the movie to be like “Holy shit, what are they doing? They did it!”.
Paul Scheer [00:42:17] But by the way, I think you’re right, because there are a lot of people out there that love this movie. I have actually pulled together some second opinions.
2nd Opinions Song [00:42:26] [2nd Opinion Song]
Paul Scheer [00:42:50] These are five star reviews from Amazon about this movie. And I’ll tell you how they go. A guy named Matt writes, “This shit rips. Five stars.” Jeff writes, “Only 20 minutes in and I give this movie five stars because of all the neon clothing.” Then edit. “This movie’s terrible, but my review stands. Five stars.” They also James H writes, “Ski school may be the best Dean Cameron movie ever made. It’s good versus evil. Playboy, Playmates versus the Snow. What else do you need for top notch entertainment? Did Citizen Kane have any of the above? I think not. Five stars.”
June Diane Raphael [00:43:42] It is a point.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:45] Also this one here. This one from. This is written in 2015. “I love this movie. They need to make it in 3D.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:58] Agree.
Paul Scheer [00:44:02] And then this one is an odd one for a five star review written by Michael C Bartholomew. He writes, “I don’t remember buying this movie. I guess I own it. I don’t remember buying it. I’m not sure. Five stars.”
June Diane Raphael [00:44:22] Wow. Someone in his family, surely purchased it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:44:26] Now I’m upset I didn’t purchased the movie using that person’s account.
Paul Scheer [00:44:33] I mean, this movie, I’ll just read you a couple of more details about it here. We know it grossed $18,000.
Rob Huebel [00:44:40] Is that true?
Paul Scheer [00:44:41] $18,000. That’s the U.S. and Canada lifetime gross. But it spawned a sequel. The tagline was “The hottest action to ever hit the slopes.” But here’s something interesting, too. If you’re a fan of our show, we did a movie called Abraxas, The Guardian of the Universe with with Jesse Ventura, The Body Ventura. The director directed that movie, but the writer went on to write ski school 2. The director did not.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:08] Oh.
Paul Scheer [00:45:09] Oh, so sad. So sad. A little sadness there. But don’t worry about it. We’ll get it back.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:15] But tonight, we’re all going back to my condo to watch Ski School 2. You’re invited.
Paul Scheer [00:45:23] And I will say that this is the best reason why Dean Cameron made this movie. He said, “This movie is so stupid. And I figured we’d have a great time making it and we did.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:37] It looks like it.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:37] And he’s amazing in this movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:40] Dynamite.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:40] Fantastic.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:41] He’s great in summer school, too. He gives me, like, kind of, like, more, an edgier Ferris Bueller vibe.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:47] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:48] You know, he’s he’s always mixing it up and making people look bad and taking on the officious kind of assholes. But it’s not as clean cut as Ferris Bueller, which, I like.
Paul Scheer [00:45:59] He’s a little bit dirtier than Ferris Bueller. Like, he feels like he might be on ketamine.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:04] Yeah. Just, like, half of this audience. Yeah.
Rob Huebel [00:46:09] But the last, like, scene with him in the very end of the movie, he ends up in the hot tub with Victoria, where he looks straight into the camera and knowing that Victoria just had sex like the day before with Johnny on a kitchen table.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:25] It’s Telluride, baby.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:27] No problem.
Paul Scheer [00:46:28] I do want to show you the worst shot of this entire movie. I was obsessed with this. This is the worst shot as we wrap up here. Check this out. This is, they’re trying to create a crowd. And a lot of times we have a small budget movie. You don’t have much crowd. So here is this movie’s version of a crowd.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:48] So many people. So many people. Oh, look how close they are.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:51] This woman, this extras in every single scene.
Paul Scheer [00:46:55] I mean, the camera.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:56] That was six people.
Paul Scheer [00:46:57] The camera pans through so it’s like the scene from Goodfellas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:03] Is this Reed’s party? This is Reed’s party where Section eight takes it over and plays loud music and the one guy goes to the other guy, “Oh, another couple of uptempo songs like this. And this party could get out of control.”
Rob Huebel [00:47:18] Dude. We haven’t even talked about the music in this movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:21] Next Level.
Rob Huebel [00:47:22] The music in this movie is all like, you know, license free.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:25] Yep.
Rob Huebel [00:47:26] Like Jam rock.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:28] I’m going to download this tomorrow and ski to it all day.
Rob Huebel [00:47:32] Yes. All about, like, “DO YOU LIKE TO PARTY?!”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:38] I just wanted Glen Plake in this somehow. Giant mohawk.
Paul Scheer [00:47:44] I just think that the any movie that ends like this where you go in on your main character, and he goes *Cheers glass*.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:54] But that’s Ferris Bueller.
Paul Scheer [00:47:55] Yes, but Ferris Bueller looks at the camera, the entire fucking movie. This waits until an hour 30. He’s like, “I know you’ve been watching this movie.” And he holds it for too long. Here we go. Then he toasts us like we did it. We were complicit. I was a part of this.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:18] You should be ashamed of yourself.
Rob Huebel [00:48:19] He also drops these, like, epic taglines that he thinks are epic that the audience has never heard before. Like, at one point he goes, “Know it. Live it. Love it.”.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:31] Another one is “We came. We partied.” Well, shit. I wrote it down and ah shit, God damn it. Black it out. The show’s over. Black it out.
Paul Scheer [00:48:41] The other one, “Not how far you go. It’s how you go far.”
June Diane Raphael [00:48:45] What does that mean?
Paul Scheer [00:48:46] Which again it’s like a funny thing that you might have said when you’re super stoned, but not something you would put in the movie multiple times as a tagline. But do you have it Jason?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:57] Oh, sorry. I stopped looking for it. I felt like we’ve moved on. I’m embarrassed. No, Now, actually, everybody stop. We’re going to sit until I find this quote.
Paul Scheer [00:49:14] Uh oh, he’s going.
June Diane Raphael [00:49:15] He has 42 font.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:17] Boobs are a character in this movie. I wrote that. Now, I’m just going to shout out other things that I wrote. But I guess it’s not about I’m so sorry.
Paul Scheer [00:49:27] I guess the question is would we recommend this movie? I’m saying yes, unequivocally. I recommend this movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:33] Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:49:33] Thousand percent. This is a special motion picture.
Rob Huebel [00:49:38] I would say this. Don’t watch it in the crowded lobby of your hotel with a lot of children around.
Paul Scheer [00:49:45] Rob, I didn’t even say it to you. When I watched it, I watched it on an airplane and I was sitting next to my son, I did not realize that there were going to be boobs. And I watched the entire movie with my notebook over the screen, just so I could see heads. And I was just moving it around.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:59] You missed so much.
Paul Scheer [00:50:02] I literally saw no boobs. And I know there are a lot because I held this up for I would say 50 minutes of the movie, my notebook.
June Diane Raphael [00:50:11] Oh, so you were just holding it up in the feat that there might be boobs?
Paul Scheer [00:50:16] Any time that anyone was like, “Let’s go in this closet. Come back to my room. Let’s play Twister.” I was like.
Rob Huebel [00:50:26] Wait, what is the Twister thing? What is the Twister thing?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:27] Solo Twister. What was that?
June Diane Raphael [00:50:29] Okay, this is so crazy because well, she’s just been hypnotized through this straw or something.
Rob Huebel [00:50:37] Under the door.
June Diane Raphael [00:50:40] She’s just been hypnotized. And what he said to her, Rob, was that he was saying, show him that you really love him. And so for whatever reason that was, that really got integrated. And the next thing we saw, she’s playing Twister with him.
Paul Scheer [00:50:57] Playing Twister by herself.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:59] This is craz-o. This is so sexy. Just this part.
Rob Huebel [00:51:05] By herself.
Paul Scheer [00:51:09] But is she doing it?
Rob Huebel [00:51:10] Clearly mentally ill.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:12] This is their version. This is their homage to The Graduate.
Paul Scheer [00:51:17] But also, if she’s doing that to seduce him, she has no idea that he might show up to her apartment that night.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:23] She’s just been playing Twister for hours. She’s been playing. She’s been upside down for hours.
June Diane Raphael [00:51:29] Listen, when you’re a woman and you’re not allowed to ski and you’re registered at a ski school.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:35] This is what people did before yoga took off.
Paul Scheer [00:51:39] Oh, my gosh.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:40] We came. We partied. We conquered.
Paul Scheer [00:51:43] That is it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:44] That’s what it was. Not worth it!
Paul Scheer [00:51:45] Thank you, everybody. Thank you, everybody, for coming out tonight for the first part of the Telluride Comedy Festival. It’s been amazing to have a show with you here. We’re going to do an improv set in just a little bit. So go out there, tip your bartenders and take a little bit of a break. Everyone will line up to the bathroom and it’ll smell gross. Bye bye.
June Diane Raphael [00:52:06] Thank you guys.
Paul Scheer [00:52:06] Rob Huebel, June Diane Raphael, Jason Mantzoukas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:12] Paul Scheer.
Paul Scheer [00:52:12] Okay. That brings us to the end of our Ski School episode. That was so much fun to do that show in Telluride, Colorado as a complete surprise to that audience and with our first guest back in the mix, Rob Huebel. The great Rob Huebel. You can watch Rob and I every Thursday on Twitch. We also simultaneously stream to YouTube and Facebook. We do a show called Thursdays with Rob and Paul where we just sit around, have fun, talk to celebrities. And the premise of the show is it’s the only “Who’s the Boss?” Recap podcast, but unfortunately, we never get to that Who’s the Boss episode? One day we will. Jason, June, and I will be back at Largo in April and March. You know, every day that we have a show, we’ll release a few extra tickets the day of based on the amount of comps that we have left over. So if you didn’t get tickets for those shows which are now all sold out, please just keep looking at the Largo website, sign up for their mailing list and head on over to HDTGM.com to find out the movies that we will be doing for that run in April. I am so excited about that. Also, if you are a Hulu subscriber, get on the history of the world. It basically has everyone that you love in comedy and not in comedy in the show. It is created by Ike Barinholtz, Nick Kroll and Wanda Sykes. A true sequel to Mel Brooks classic film, The History of the World. This is a lot of fun. I have a very small part in it. If you find me in it, give yourself a penny, because you’re definitely lucky. But Jason is fantastic in it, and you could check that out on Hulu. There’s a four night streaming event happening and you will not want to miss it. Something else you don’t want to miss is some of our Topsy Kretts merchandise. One of our producers, Molly Reynolds, has created some amazing stuff. Check out our social media to see our Topsy Kretts journals. Also, we have a great a bunch of new shirts in our Teepublic store, so there’s plenty of places for you to find a bunch of good How Did This Get Made very niche merch. A big thank you to our amazing tech crew in Telluride and everyone at the Sheridan Opera House for making that possible. The Comedy Festival there is a blast and Jeb Barrier makes it possible every single year. So thank you for figuring out how to record this show and make it usable. So we appreciate that so much. And then a big thanks to our team here who made it actually usable for your ears. I’m talking about the amazing, producorial work of Scott Sonne, Molly Reynolds and our movie picking producer, Avril Hally. Our engineer Alex Gonzales, and our publisher, July Diaz. People, they make the trains run and we love them. So we will see you next week for Last Looks. And until then, bye for now.
