Paul Scheer [00:00:00] For those who live life one quarter of a mile at a time. Let’s go menage. We saw The Fast and the Furious. So you know what that means!
Music [00:00:19] [Intro Song]
Paul Scheer [00:01:08] Hello, people of Earth! And hello, people of Largo! We are here in Los Angeles. Going back to where it all started. Torreto. 2001, the country was in disarray. And this movie brought us all back. I bet that if you went up to anyone as they left the theater, they would be shocked if you said in 2023 they’ll still be making these movies. What is shocking about this movie? Well, a lot of things. They’re not superheroes. Cars act like cars. The team is smaller, but yet still robust. We’ll get into all the specifics of it, but surprise, surprise. Paul Walker is a cop who is embedded in the L.A. automotive scene to find out who is behind the hijacking of big rigs full of, you guessed it, DVD TV combo players. This operation is a joint FBI, LAPD operation. Brian is going under with the best name of all time. I’ll get it. I don’t want to. I don’t even want to touch on it. What his alias is in this movie. We’ll get into all of it, and we will talk about where these characters started. And it will be maybe with you journey and figure out where they go. So without any further ado, please welcome to the stage my co-host, Mr. Jason Mantzoukas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:21] What’s up, jerks!? What’s up, family? That’s right, Largo. This is my family.
Paul Scheer [00:03:34] Welcome, Jason.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:35] I wish I’d known I would have worn my shirt.
Paul Scheer [00:03:37] You know, I just. I pulled it out. I am in my Torreto gear.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:40] I know it’s still got the sleeves on it.
Paul Scheer [00:03:43] You know. Yeah. Well, we’re going back to the original Fast and Furious where its sleeves were still around for the most part. When we get to fast, ten sleeves have been eliminated.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:55] At this. What a quaint time to spend with the fast crew.
Paul Scheer [00:03:59] This really is.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:00] This was a delight.
Paul Scheer [00:04:01] It was like watching a one act play.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:06] It was like watching a small indie movie.
Paul Scheer [00:04:11] And I got to say, impressed with some of the acting. Here’s the mistake that I made. I tried to get ready for the show and I type in, okay, I know we’re doing the first one. Fast and Furious. Start watching it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:25] Nope.
Paul Scheer [00:04:25] That’s the fourth one or that’s what it or it’s the, it’s the one that came out in 2009. I was like Dominican Republic? Well, I don’t think it starts there. And then I’m like, fuck. They named the movie Fast and Furious, and then this movie is called The Fast and the Furious, and now it’s just down to like Fast X. But I mean, the.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:46] Thing that blew my mind and you referenced it just a second ago was in the opening heist, it isn’t even just TV DVDs, it is VCRs. There are VCRs in the truck.
Paul Scheer [00:05:00] I would argue that the VCRs get more highlighted than the DVD players. And part of me feels like the production couldn’t afford to even get the propage of the DVDs at that point.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:11] Yeah. Well, they had Panasonic, Panasonic dumped a lot of product. They were like, we’re dumping these. You want to put them in your dumb movie?
Paul Scheer [00:05:19] Panasonic’s like, Oh, please show us as something the thieves want. Here to break down the film and hairstyles and in so many ways that you would never even think to look at a film critically. My other co-host, please welcome June Diane Raphael. Welcome, June. How are you?
June Diane Raphael [00:05:52] I’m well. How are you, Paul?
Paul Scheer [00:05:54] Very well. Thank you for asking.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:55] I got to tell you, you look good. God damn.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:02] Do you want it? Do you want it? Should we cut the sleeves off?
Paul Scheer [00:06:05] If you have a scissor, I’ll cut the sleeves off. I’ll cut the sleeves. I will say this.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:10] This is a style that I’ve never seen you in. And I don’t mind it not one bit.
Paul Scheer [00:06:15] All right. I want to thank Pete. The S man. Pete, the S man made us these shirts. He’s here. Thank you, Pete.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:24] Thank you, Pete.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:28] Great work, Pete.
Paul Scheer [00:06:30] You know what? For the Fast Ten show, I will cut the sleeves off. Let’s build to it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:37] Why do I feel like you’re going to spend the next, whatever, month getting just jacked. It’s going to be like you’re going to, arms are going to be like, twice. You’re going to Kumail this.
Paul Scheer [00:06:49] Well, you know what? Maybe just for this audience. By May 26th, I will get. I’m just going to start doing roids. I’m going to get really. I already got the hair.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:59] Holy shit. If we could produce a picture of you that looked as close to Vin Diesel as possible. That would be amazing.
Paul Scheer [00:07:09] I am. I’ve been working on my follow up to his short film, Multi Facial, which is a short film that Vin Diesel made called Multi Facial, which again probably is aptly titled as Race Wars. But but just like, oh, maybe you should have ran that by somebody before calling your short film. But Multi Facial is a film that he made to show that he could play anything. Native American. Latin. And like that, Italian. Like that’s the whole thing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:07:39] Who is he? Steven Seagal?
Paul Scheer [00:07:44] But, you know, I mentioned this before. We, you know, this is a big show for us because this is something that we have kind of imprinted in our show. And we wanted to make sure that we brought to you an expert, somebody who really knows Fast-verse. Loves Fast and Furious as much as we do. And we, I think we found a perfect person. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our guest, Seth Rogen.
Seth Rogen [00:08:20] Hello.
Paul Scheer [00:08:22] Welcome.
Seth Rogen [00:08:23] Race Wars!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:27] Race Wars! Race Wars.
Jason, Paul, Seth [00:08:31] Race Wars. Race Wars. Race Wars.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:32] No. No. Oh, okay. I’m hearing that we shouldn’t have done that. So we’re cutting it from the episode.
Paul Scheer [00:08:44] Here’s the one thing that I will tell you.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:45] Don’t tell anybody we did that.
Paul Scheer [00:08:48] Here. The one thing that I love. Somebody, I think we could keep it him because of this fact alone. A listener of the show wrote me a couple of months ago and said, Hey–
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:03] You are the people that said it!
Paul Scheer [00:09:09] A listener of the show wrote me a couple of months ago and said “I was cleaning out an office and I found the original script of Fast and Furious. Can I send it to you? I want to get it out there. There’s a lot of differences. It takes place in New York. There’s a lot of things. But one of the big differences is in that script for the Fast and the Furious. It is called Street Wars. And someone went in to changed it, Race Wars. It was it was already fine. The fact that it was written as Street Wars and changed the Race Wars and no one flagged it.
Paul Scheer [00:09:55] And I believe, if I’m not mistaken, at least one or multiple right of the later sequels also feature time at Race Wars?
Paul Scheer [00:10:03] Yes. They go back to race wars.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:10:04] They go back to race wars.
June Diane Raphael [00:10:06] How?
Paul Scheer [00:10:07] You can’t escape resource. Seth.
June Diane Raphael [00:10:14] Seth’s done.
Seth Rogen [00:10:16] Done. That was it for me.
Paul Scheer [00:10:19] We were talking this week. You saw this in the theater?
Seth Rogen [00:10:21] Oh, yeah, for sure. 2001. I was 19 years old. Something like that. Yeah, I was. I saw that. I remember I was in Vancouver when I saw it. And actually in Vancouver where I’m from, like street racing was a big thing. Oh, yeah. It was a really big thing. There was a huge amount of kids who were suping up their parents fucking cars and. And in fucking high school, all of my maniac friends sort of suping up their little fucking cars. And I remember like there was a point where I was like, if their fucking steering wheel matches the color of their fucking hubcaps, I’m not getting in the car with these motherfuckers like they’re fucking crazy and let you be like, at a party and someone would be like any one want to go to the store with me and you get in these little fucking cars and be ripping through the fucking streets. And it was really stressful. And so yeah, when this movie came out, I was like, Oh, they made a movie about these motherfuckers. And then but then I saw it and I loved it. I got to say.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:15] I wouldn’t have expected that in Vancouver.
Seth Rogen [00:11:19] There’s yeah, it’s cause it’s a it’s a lot of the cars are Asian cars and there was a huge amount of Asian kids who had moved. I mean, if you want to get into.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:27] Let’s.
Seth Rogen [00:11:27] There’s a lot of kids. The Hong Kong Handover. Have you heard of the hong Kong Handover? There were, Right. Well, I also love how the movie, they are divided by race for the most part.
Paul Scheer [00:11:39] It really works on both levels.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:43] Of course, except for Vin, who is everything.
Seth Rogen [00:11:47] I kept writing down, Who’s side would he be on?!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:50] He’s the Jesus Christ of the race wars. And he’s like, I’ve come to bring peace to all of you, family.
Paul Scheer [00:11:59] I really remember talking about this movie and justifying why I liked it in 2001, being like, If you like Point Break, it’s just like Point Break. It’s kind of like Point Break and it really is like kind of like Point Break.
Seth Rogen [00:12:14] Like Point Break with no crime.
Paul Scheer [00:12:15] Yes. Well, yeah, like, yeah, the crime of point break happens a lot. Here it’s like, alluded to.
Seth Rogen [00:12:21] Was I missing the the crime? Was there one crime?
Paul Scheer [00:12:27] Yeah. In the beginning there was two.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:31] Act one and act two have a single heist.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:33] Yes, but other crimes, 6 million dollars worth of crimes have happened.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:39] Correct. You’re right.
Seth Rogen [00:12:39] That’s not that much.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:42] Thinking why is DC involved?
Seth Rogen [00:12:45] They stole like $6 million worth of VCRs?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:48] By the way? Exactly. Do you know how the the metric ton of VCR you’d have to have to equal $6 million in 2001. I guarantee you the feds, spend more money renting that mid-century modern house to have just so they can put up pictures.
Paul Scheer [00:13:08] Incredible house.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:10] I was like, I want to live here.
Seth Rogen [00:13:12] They tore it down. I looked it up.
Paul Scheer [00:13:14] It’s a beautiful house. And you know that this film has its finger on the pulse of youth when it’s described as you know, Eddie Fisher bought this house for Elizabeth Taylor. Like, you need to be like the lead singer of Korn. Fuck Tier one. Oh, yeah. Like, like, who cares about.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:33] But that’s what I loved about this movie. First of all, I have never seen this movie before. It was my first.
Seth Rogen [00:13:39] Wow.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:39] Yeah, I know. And so now I’m looking back at, I’ve watched this franchise so chaotically, so haphazardly with no, there hasn’t been a path that’s made sense.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:50] To be fair, the franchise doesn’t have a path that makes sense. Would you be shocked to find out in very few movies Vin Diesel is not even in them anymore?
June Diane Raphael [00:13:58] I’m shocked. Well.
Seth Rogen [00:14:00] They’re not even chronological. There’s like three movies that take place before this movie that come out, I think.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:04] But there are certain details in this movie, like the cops being in that house, the decaf, the cigarettes, stuff like that, where I was like, I love this movie. I love these scenes. I don’t I don’t recognize this as any other fast movie that I’ve ever seen in all my days.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:20] Because it’s fun. Vin Diesel smiles more in this movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:25] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:25] Than he has smiled since this movie in life.
Paul Scheer [00:14:30] But I also say like I watch this movie. And I was like, I get it. Like he’s a star.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:36] He’s a star.
Paul Scheer [00:14:36] When he does that monologue, I’m like, This is very good.
Seth Rogen [00:14:41] I live life one quarter mile time. I was like, Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:43] Do yourself a favor, Paul. Actually, if you don’t mind, live your life one quarter mile at a time tattoo. Look it up.
Paul Scheer [00:14:52] All right, I’d do it for this show.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:54] I did this already and it’s nuts. Everybody wants this as a tattoo.
Seth Rogen [00:15:00] Really? That’s a tattoo?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:02] Yeah, it’s a huge tattoo. The script. “I live my life one quarter mile at a time.”.
Seth Rogen [00:15:07] Was that a saying before this movie?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:09] I can’t imagine.
Paul Scheer [00:15:11] I mean, but it seems like he doesn’t. It seems that there’s a lot of planning going into these heists. It seems like he’s planning a lot of stuff right there.
June Diane Raphael [00:15:17] Right.
Seth Rogen [00:15:17] They’re not that complicated. And in the end are thwarted by a man with a shotgun.
June Diane Raphael [00:15:24] Yes, that was it.
Seth Rogen [00:15:26] Like the big villian in the third act is, he’s like a scared man with a shotgun.
Paul Scheer [00:15:34] And they’d all be dead if he could reload quicker.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:37] Or if he had a buddy. A non-verbal like antagonist is the big bad. Like that was crazy.
Paul Scheer [00:15:43] Can I just say like the thing that I love in this movie is the first heist starts with a grappling hook, and I feel like grappling hooks aren’t used as much in life, but in movies, everyone’s got a fucking grappling hook.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:54] Oh, yeah. Hollywood’s keeping big grapple in business.
Paul Scheer [00:15:57] Like the way that they attack the truck is shooting a grappling hook through the passenger side window. But then that would break. So it’s not like you could use that.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:08] The first one is to pull the window off. The second one is so you can get across safely if you’re. Vin. No, no, no, not Vin. Who’s it’s Vince.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:16] I think it’s hard to ultimately, it’s like these truck drivers, they’re not doing anything wrong out there.
Seth Rogen [00:16:22] The third act is a scared guy trying to save his VCRs.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:27] And even when even when the FBI is like, well, the truckers got to arm themselves is going to be mayhem. I’m like, good, they should arm themselves.
Paul Scheer [00:16:34] By the way, I also like that the police have it in with the truckers, the truckers are like, hey, if this keeps on happening, I’m going to tell my guys. They’ll fucking shoot them, like and the cops are like Hey, hey, buddy, truckers. We got this. The truckers are like, I’ll give you 36 hours and then my guys are going ham.
Seth Rogen [00:16:50] But those are the stakes of the movie. Is that maybe the truckers will just have to do it themselves. The movie, which when they do try to do it, he pretty much does it.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:03] They are successful.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:04] Also we don’t see in the rest of the movie, the feds, any of the bosses, any of the we never, they never arrive. They never, when we get to the end of that whole chase sequence, when Vince is almost maimed, he has to be airlifted out. There’s still nobody there on the scene.
Paul Scheer [00:17:20] But I also don’t understand, like they, in the middle of the movie, there is like this moment where they’re like, should we go bust that crew? And he goes, Yeah. So they have a ton of DVD TV combos, cars that match the look, but they were all bought legally and these guys just race.
Seth Rogen [00:17:38] And they bust Johnny Tran while he’s drinking tea with his family.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:42] Okay. But again, what this movie gave us was that moment between Johnny Tran’s dad and Johnny Tran and.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:49] Which is great.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:50] I thought that was a beautiful moment, not verbal, you know, beats in the background, but just a gorgeous moment.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:59] And I loved it, too, when it’s like he’s, Johnny Tran’s been set up as like a real villain. Yeah. And then you see this moment and then he confronts Vin rather at race wars and it’s like you embarrass me in front of my family. And that was. That’s what I love about this movie versus, for example, we watched, we all watched Torque last night. Anybody? Torque? It didn’t have any of that, right? There’s no family. There’s no like, there are aren’t any consequences or stakes for any of the people in Torque. Except Adam Scott.
Seth Rogen [00:18:32] That’s why there’s not ten Torques dude.
Paul Scheer [00:18:35] It’s true. They haven’t figured out the secret sauce.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:37] And it’s you know, this movie is also about life as someone who struggles with ADD..
Seth Rogen [00:18:42] Oh, yeah. That’s a real battle. Longest, a lot of people probably have that tattoo also. Yeah, I think.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:51] RIP Jessie.
Seth Rogen [00:18:52] I know that guy walked, so Aaron Paul could fly.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:57] Put some respect on his name please. That guy was wonderful.
Paul Scheer [00:19:02] Breaking Bad was just making Adderall, not meth.
Seth Rogen [00:19:08] The guy was sitting there watching it, calling his agent. He’s like, There’s nothing, nothing? Like, Sorry, you got to watch the show. And he’s like, no, man!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:14] That’s my whole thing.
Seth Rogen [00:19:16] No bitch.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:17] He did a great job. I would be mad if I were him, too, because like that, you know, because at certain points of the movie. I’m like, wow, this movie is really, if we keep on going back and back to back, we land at ADD being the cause of all of this.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:33] Yeah. Yeah. This movie is about ADD and a sandwich shop.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:36] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:19:37] Oh, wait. So the sandwich shop. I’ve talked about this in the past.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:40] I forgot.
Seth Rogen [00:19:41] When I saw that Vin Diesel owned the sandwich shop.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:45] I forgot that they owned a sandwich shop.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:49] So do they not own it as the years go by?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:52] No, no, I don’t think. Do we ever return to the sandwich shop? No, right? What, for 5 minutes?
Seth Rogen [00:19:59] In which one?
Paul Scheer [00:20:01] In three.
Seth Rogen [00:20:02] Oh, yeah, yeah. There’s only that scene.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:08] That’s the scene we’re talking about.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:09] That’s what we are. That’s what we’re all talking about.
Paul Scheer [00:20:14] It’s not revisiting it if we are talking about it. It would be it.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:19] Got that one.
Paul Scheer [00:20:20] I will say I got to interview with June, the cast of Fast Nine, a live on stage.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:28] Call it an interview, Paul.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:29] Did you say alive on stage?
Seth Rogen [00:20:32] Did you say got to?
Paul Scheer [00:20:36] I was blessed to. Where I did call Vin Diesel Dom. That was a mistake. An honest mistake.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:45] I bet he was thrilled. He answered, didn’t he?
Paul Scheer [00:20:49] He did. Yeah. But I did say to him, I did say to Jordana Brewster, I said, Wow, Mia’s come a long way from making sandwiches. Like has there been any thought of her going back to that restaurant biz? And she looked like she didn’t remember it.
Seth Rogen [00:21:11] Mia doing what?
Paul Scheer [00:21:13] She’s like that was 20 years ago.
Seth Rogen [00:21:15] I loved how Brian’s whole, like, undercover persona was a guy who just loves tuna sandwiches.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:20] Yeah. That’s as much as he needs as an in. He’s just like, I go to the shop. I order a sandwich. Now I’m in with the crew.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:31] To be fair, I’m not surprised the sandwich shop didn’t last very long. Like everybody’s like, these sandwiches are terrible.
Seth Rogen [00:21:38] Why are you buying them?
Paul Scheer [00:21:39] Well, he also asks her, like, how’s the tuna today? And she’s like, It’s not good. She’s making it. It’s like she could have improved it if she knows.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:50] Is there a lot of differentiation tuna-wise day to day in real life?
Seth Rogen [00:21:57] How’s the tuna today, said, no one in history.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:00] Is that like a catch of the day scenario? Like it’s good tuna today.
Paul Scheer [00:22:04] Sometimes, if I go to Subway, I’ll ask if I have a tuna fish sandwich at Subway, which I’ve stopped doing many years ago. But but when I did, I would always ask, is it okay? Like because they have an idea of how long it’s been there. And I’m like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:18] If you have to ask, you shouldn’t eat it.
June Diane Raphael [00:22:19] Yeah, Paul. Paul.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:20] That that should be a real rule. If I have to ask is this safe to eat, I should choose different.
June Diane Raphael [00:22:28] What a huge amount of trust to put in these people who work at subway.
Paul Scheer [00:22:32] But she seems she seems legitimately angry to be making him a sandwich, but yet it’s not taking her away from any other job. Her job seems to be short order cook, I mean, or a sandwich cook. I mean, it doesn’t even look like there’s a grill back there.
Seth Rogen [00:22:47] What is Dom doing about little room he’s in?
June Diane Raphael [00:22:50] I really want to know.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:53] Do you mean Dom’s brooding cage?
Seth Rogen [00:22:57] Put him in his room.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:58] I’m going to go in the back and brood.
Paul Scheer [00:23:00] He has like, a room like Danny DeVito has in Taxi. Who’s calling my name?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:08] By the way, if it’s not clear, we loved this movie.
Seth Rogen [00:23:13] It was amazing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:14] This was exceptional.
Paul Scheer [00:23:15] But you get to why at the end of this movie, like Vin Diesel goes off to become a big movie star, Like he doesn’t do the sequel. He’s like, I’m out. That was it. Like. Like. And for him to come back in four, he’s out for two. And his career kind of arcs in a way where he’s like, I’ll be back and he jumps back in and that’s like the beginning of a another.
Seth Rogen [00:23:41] Now he only makes these movies.
Paul Scheer [00:23:43] Yeah, that’s it. But then you get Paul Walker in this movie. And what I love about Paul Walker in this film is he’s undercover, he looks young, everyone’s young.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:53] Everyone looks hot in this movie. Every man, woman, every every person.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:57] And the movie’s got a great horny energy to it. Not for nothing.
Paul Scheer [00:24:02] Well, it’s like there was and we talked about this a little bit in the Torque episode. There was sex in these movies like or an element of it.
Seth Rogen [00:24:09] Vin Diesel fully motorboats Michelle Rodriguez at one point.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:12] I wrote the exact same thing down.
Seth Rogen [00:24:18] [Motorboat noises]
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:18] I was like, these are grown people. Is this is. I mean, I’m not sure motorboating. It’s such a sexy scene. He, like, picks her up and puts her on the car. And then he’s like.
Seth Rogen [00:24:32] Yeah, I think I pictured a motorboat. Like, in the truest sense it was a motorboat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:41] I just picture Vin being like, I’ll pick her up, I’ll put her over here, we’ll sit down. I’ll motorboat her.
Paul Scheer [00:24:48] Like all car guys.
Seth Rogen [00:24:50] You know how you do. You know, the normal sexual progression of.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:54] We’re in the garage, we’re surrounded by motors, motorboat boat. Pick ’em up, tear their shirt off, they tear your shirt off. You motorboat.
Paul Scheer [00:25:05] Now, I will say that the original script, this one that was in 2000, dated.
Seth Rogen [00:25:11] A motorboat Letty. Motorboats her ferociously.
Paul Scheer [00:25:18] [Motorboat noises]
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:22] [Motorboat noises]
June Diane Raphael [00:25:35] I mean, listen, you’re not. But you’re not wrong. Up until then, I was like, Ooh, I like this scene. Like, I like everything that’s… oh no, there’s a motorboat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:46] It’s a real, it’s a real buzzkill. When you’re home tonight, hooking up after the show. Just sneak a real subtle motorboat in just to be connected to everybody else.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:58] So silly, I will say. Paul Walker. Paul Walker.
Seth Rogen [00:26:04] But unless you’re doing the hard pulling the chord motion, it’s not a true motorboat.
June Diane Raphael [00:26:09] Paul Walker. Eyes of a husky. Eyes of a husky looked amazing.
Paul Scheer [00:26:13] By the way, in that movie Snow Dogs with Huskies. So he was like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:17] Oh, doesn’t he play their father?
Paul Scheer [00:26:19] Oh, yeah, Yeah. I was shaved so we could win this race.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:25] Unshaved husky.
June Diane Raphael [00:26:27] He’s so crazy, though. He has such piercing blue eyes. He looks so beautiful, this movie. And then to see him during the raid that he’s a part of. Which is like he’s undercover. Does he need to also do that? But. But with a big mask on, it’s like, Oh, that’s so clearly still you. We see your husky eyes.
Paul Scheer [00:26:47] I will say this much that in this film, you know, Brian and Mia, they have this relationship and in the film they go out on first date, which we’ll get into, but then they wake up kind of in bed and, you know, it’s alluded to that maybe they had sex, even though they seem both, I think, fully clothed. But in the original draft.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:05] She is naked.
Paul Scheer [00:27:06] Oh, she is. Okay. All right. Well, in the in the original. He’s blocking the majority of her body. In this in the original draft.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:14] Oh no, she’s under the covers, to be clear. Sorry. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:27:16] All right. So in the original.
June Diane Raphael [00:27:17] Paul doesn’t see that when he looks in movies, he just watches the certain story.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:20] I also think you might think sheets are clothes, sheets are the clothes off the bed.
Seth Rogen [00:27:26] Toga.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:27] She was wearing the bed’s clothes.
Paul Scheer [00:27:30] Talk to all my friends who are ghosts. That’s their clothes.
Seth Rogen [00:27:33] That’s their outfit. My roman friends, my ghost friends.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:37] I would believe that you have a number of ghost stories.
Paul Scheer [00:27:40] I have a couple. So in the in the original draft, they go skinny dipping in a stone quarry lake. And I wanted to read.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:51] Stone Quarry Lake in Los Angeles?
Paul Scheer [00:27:53] Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:54] Of course. The LA quarry and lake.
Paul Scheer [00:28:00] This is the the scene description of it. It’s pretty funny here. It’s like “the black Acura is parked next to a pristine quarry surrounded by woods.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:08] Can the lights come down?
Paul Scheer [00:28:15] “A shriek as Brian runs into a diving leap, Mia on his tail, trying to catch him. They soar through the air and plummet into the quarry lake, howling with laughter. They splash each other playfully. Brian dives under and comes up behind Mia. She screams with delight. They embrace for a long kiss. They pull each other’s clothes off. They start to make love in the water.”.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:38] What?
Paul Scheer [00:28:39] “Only this time. Nothing in the world is going to stop them.”
Seth Rogen [00:28:45] I like that.
June Diane Raphael [00:28:46] I’d like to have seen it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:47] Except the terrible discomfort of trying to have sex in the water.
Seth Rogen [00:28:50] In a quarry.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:54] We’re getting that filthy sediment water inside of us. You shoved a bunch of quartz in me.
Seth Rogen [00:29:02] That’s a scene where, like, he’s in bed with her and the FBI guys call. They’re like, We’re going to raid the house. If you’re cool with it, say yes. And he goes, Yes, but like, what a dumb fucking thing. Like, that’s not a conversation. Like, you can’t play hot. Like, even if it’s a wrong number, who would it be Like? You be like, what was that wrong number, if you like. Why did you just say yes? What phone comprises of the word yes?.
Paul Scheer [00:29:31] I just. I think I got the wrong number. Am I right?
Seth Rogen [00:29:34] Yes. Yes. Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:36] Yeah. It’s a real bummer.
Seth Rogen [00:29:37] It’d be correct to say.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:39] For a criminal family, they are not suspicious enough at all. Vince is the only one who is and he’s a piece of shit.
Seth Rogen [00:29:49] But he’s hungry. Gotta eat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:52] He’s got to eat. He’s got to. He’s got to, like, come back sad and kiss Dom’s head.
June Diane Raphael [00:29:58] Because I have. I don’t have any recollection of the other ones, I am wondering I’d love to ask how did they go from drag racing to solving crimes as a team?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:09] Oh, boy.
Paul Scheer [00:30:11] Well, there’s a lot.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:12] Step by step process.
June Diane Raphael [00:30:13] Yes, but okay.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:14] We also have to spend quite a bit of time in Tokyo.
Paul Scheer [00:30:18] Which none of them are in which except Han.
Seth Rogen [00:30:21] Who becomes in the other one.
June Diane Raphael [00:30:23] Just because after watching this one I’m like wow. They don’t, they do not seem to have any skillsets.
Seth Rogen [00:30:31] They can barely steal VCRs.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:32] Yes, they are. Ultimately, they’re failures.
Paul Scheer [00:30:38] Their number one tool is a computer run by a guy with A.D.D. like, that’s the most.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:45] Who’s now dead.
Paul Scheer [00:30:46] And they also. They do some stuff that was like, Hey, man, it’s the Internet. You can find out anything. Like in 2001 for them to find out anything about Brian Splinter or whatever his name is.
Seth Rogen [00:30:58] Spilner. That’s how you knew they did not think this was going to be a franchise. They’re like what should we name him? Brian Spilner.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:09] I did feel watching this like, oh, they have no idea what’s ahead for them. Oh, the adventures you’re going to go on over the next 20 years. Look at you. You’re so cute.
Seth Rogen [00:31:22] The amount your head will grow then, feet, it will be feet wider by the time this adventure is over.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:30] You’ve probably not even been on an airplane. Never mind. Dropped out of one while inside of a car. You haven’t, you haven’t fought a submarine or been to space yet. You don’t even know Tyreese yet.
Paul Scheer [00:31:44] There’s so much. By the way, this movie is like, It is nuts. I really liked it. I enjoyed it. But there are some sloppy elements. Like there’s one part and I couldn’t.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:53] Hard disagree.
Paul Scheer [00:31:55] There’s one moment of it, I think. I couldn’t tell if this is like a conscious choice or not, but when they are when their car is blown up by the gang, Right? Yeah. You know, Brian says like, hey, man, what was that about? He’s like, long story. Then the car blows up and they say it again. The same line. And then they cut out.
June Diane Raphael [00:32:19] I actually rewind it because I was like, oh there’s some sort of glitch in the system.
Seth Rogen [00:32:24] They just had two things happen they couldn’t explain it like 90 seconds and the only line of dialog they could think of to make it work was “What was that all about?” I don’t know. They said it twice. They should know. Those guys did nothing. They pulled them over in their motorcycles, drove them away, blew up their car and that’s it.
Paul Scheer [00:32:47] Well and then also I didn’t I don’t know that much about Nas, but does this movie.
Seth Rogen [00:32:51] Nas man Nas, I’m on Nas right now. Nas has.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:32:55] That’s why you’re going so fast.
Seth Rogen [00:32:57] I’m fucking raging right now, dude.
Paul Scheer [00:32:59] Nas is displayed like in those cases at like, diners where the desserts go around. Like, it’s like. But I thought that was an illegal thing to have Nas.
June Diane Raphael [00:33:09] Well, that’s what I kept on wondering. I also didn’t know what Nas was, but I thought, Well, is this sort of like doing steroids or is it this is a kind of a performance enhancing drug? I would love to see how they are as racers with no nas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:24] Well, well, well.
June Diane Raphael [00:33:25] All you have to do, because then I didn’t understand what is the art of what is the art of drag racing. Is it about your racing skills and your handling skills. Or is it about just how you can sup up a car?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:39] I think that’s part of it is the suping up and being proud of all the ways you do it because do you remember? There is the race I believe in the one you were talking about, Paul. The one that’s maybe in the Dominican Republic, where Vin is in a car that’s so old it doesn’t have nas. But he manages to crack open the engine and pour like alcohol in it or something and do the exact same thing to the motor.
June Diane Raphael [00:34:04] This isn’t in this movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:05] No, no. One of the other ones. There’s always a way in which they push it to the red line and they’re like, I have to add a stick of dynamite to this. Yeah. Otherwise it’s not dangerous enough. But yeah, I think the suping it up of the car is part of this. Part of this whole aesthetic. No? No, because. Well, the audience is mostly racers, right?
Seth Rogen [00:34:28] That’s why they were so psyched about the race wars.
Paul Scheer [00:34:32] Well, I mean, when you type in, when you type in nas.
Paul Scheer [00:34:35] I’d start the chant again, but I think I’d get in trouble.
Seth Rogen [00:34:38] We can’t start it.
Paul Scheer [00:34:39] I mean, when you when you type in Nas, it really is just saying it’s laughing gas. It’s this use by dentists.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:46] Really?
Paul Scheer [00:34:47] Yeah, it’s nitrous oxide. Okay. So so then I guess they’ve figured out how to take that and it says.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:55] I don’t think they figured it out.
Seth Rogen [00:34:58] Rob Cohen. Rob figured it out.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:00] Vin Diesel is like, what about dental stuff?
Seth Rogen [00:35:04] I was at the dentist the other day?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:07] Vin was like, What about this other stuff? What about whatever? What about whatever’s in Dennis Hopper’s thing from Blue Velvet? Family.
Seth Rogen [00:35:18] You guys seen Little Shop of Horrors?
Paul Scheer [00:35:21] It’s used in cars to boost the output of the engine for a limited duration. Its first application dates back to World War Two, when it was used to increase the power of air jets.
Seth Rogen [00:35:30] Vin Diesel did it in Saving Private Ryan. That was the first time.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:33] That’s where he learned.
Paul Scheer [00:35:34] Spielberg I’ve got this.
Seth Rogen [00:35:37] I invented it in that movie.
Paul Scheer [00:35:39] But yeah, so I mean, that’s, you know, and I guess what they’re doing is putting multiple, more nas than normal because when Vin Diesel lifts up the passenger seat.
June Diane Raphael [00:35:49] Is there a normal amount of nas?
Paul Scheer [00:35:50] Well, he seems like he has a lot of nas.
Seth Rogen [00:35:52] You’re talking one, two tanks. That’s your normal nas.
Paul Scheer [00:35:55] He’s got four in there.
Seth Rogen [00:35:56] Four or five tanks in the seat. That’s abnormal nas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:59] For me, I use a quarter tank of Nas to get me home. And listen, I cannot use Nas anytime I want. If I want to stop Nas and I can stop Nas. I just don’t want to.
Paul Scheer [00:36:12] And by the way, nitrous oxide has found its application in drift races like formula drift and limited usage on urban roads due to safety and legal reasons. Yeah, but there it is. Wet Nas harder, dry Nas easier to use.
Seth Rogen [00:36:26] Oh yeah, that’s why I use wet nas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:28] Please never. Let’s let’s all agree to never say wet nas.
Seth Rogen [00:36:33] I like a nice wet nas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:34] Oh you wouldn’t believe what I got into last night that Nas was wet.
Seth Rogen [00:36:40] That was some wet nas. At first it wasn’t, but then it was.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:44] Oh, I got two tanks of sopping wet nas.
Seth Rogen [00:36:48] I hate dry nas.
Paul Scheer [00:36:52] When I go to when I go to the car place I’m like is that Nas fresh? And if you got to ask. It’s not good Nas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:59] Top me up with some of that moist Nas.
Paul Scheer [00:37:04] What I want to go back to June is what you said early on about the cops and the FBI in that house. And that one line where they go is like, get us some ice cappuccinos. And he’s like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:15] Four. Four iced cappucinos.
Paul Scheer [00:37:17] And he goes, you know, you know, he’s like he asked them and and you think he’s going to be like, you want that decaf or regular? He was like, regular, you fucking dumb ass. And he’s like decaf. So and they pay it off with him, sipping like a like with whipped cream on top out of a glass mug. Like mmmm.
June Diane Raphael [00:37:41] Okay. So I thought about that scene and those cappuccinos for so I’m still thinking about it. And I think what was happening is that that cop was was like, I got to de-escalate the energy in this room. Like, I’d love to stay caffeinated. I need it. But after what I’ve seen here, all of these different relationships and how things are amping up, I’m going to say decaf. Now what I was really distressed by was the way in which those cappuccinos were presented. I can no more imagine drinking an iced cappuccino on my teeth without a straw.
Paul Scheer [00:38:20] But by the way, would.
June Diane Raphael [00:38:21] Why were they in those glass mugs?
Paul Scheer [00:38:22] Well, this is what I read here. So we’re going to play the scene. But what I read here is like that this one cop is always like, Can I make you an ice cappuccino? I make a great iced cappuccino like Phillips. We don’t need iced cappuccinos all the time. And then, like, it, he was like, Give Philip, I’ll throw him a bone. Let’s get the ice cappuccinos. Like, this is a big moment for him. That to feel like. If you look at the cop as like a guy who’s always trying to get the ice cappuccinos going, but.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:44] Think about how difficult it would be. They’re at a house in the hills. That means there’s a full on cappuccino maker in the home.
June Diane Raphael [00:38:54] Of course there is Jason. I imagine there was.
Paul Scheer [00:38:54] Happy like, hey, we’re going to be at the house, I’ll bring my cappuccino machine.
Seth Rogen [00:38:59] It seems like they spared no expense being at this house. I got to say.
June Diane Raphael [00:39:02] I feel like they were at this house and they were like, we’re going to use everything, every appliance.
Paul Scheer [00:39:09] We should spend $8 million catching them.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:12] Yes. Well, just so they can hang out.
Paul Scheer [00:39:14] Just to debrief with their one undercover. You could do that in an alley.
June Diane Raphael [00:39:20] Now. I’m like, maybe that’s why the FBI agent was like, This has to close up. We have to close the deal in 36 hours because we are spending.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:28] We are hemoraging money.
Paul Scheer [00:39:30] We already signed. We already said we’re leaving this month and we have to get out.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:34] Also because it’s $6 million. But like Brian’s car, the green car that explodes. That’s an enormous expense gone. He needs another car. That’s a whole other thing. They keep pouring money into Brian, who is more and more just going full blown like, I’m out of here. I’m helping the bad guys.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:56] I needed more of Ted Levine in the Gary Busey in point break part. Like Ted Levine, who’s Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. Who is Brian’s handler, is very passive in a way. And I love Ted Levine. Very passive in a way that you needed the the insane gonzo nonsense of Gary Busey as a presence in Brian’s life. I feel like to give any weight to that part.
Paul Scheer [00:40:20] But by the way, also, this is a twist. Like, as the audience, we all now know the backstory. We’re 23 years in.
June Diane Raphael [00:40:26] Can I tell you something? I’d never knew that Brian was a cop.
Paul Scheer [00:40:30] Oh, wow. So how did it feel to you?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:33] Of course not.
June Diane Raphael [00:40:34] I was shocked. Yeah.
Seth Rogen [00:40:36] You don’t find out he’s a cop until I think 37 minutes. And I was watching and my wife Lauren and I was like, you know, we were like 33 minutes into the movie. And I’m like, it’s exactly like point break, but they’re not doing any crimes. And she was like, Yeah, except in point break he’s a cop. And I was like, He is a cop. And she went, What?!
June Diane Raphael [00:40:57] And I’ve seen all the others. And there’s no reference.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:00] No, no, you’re right. You’re right.
Paul Scheer [00:41:01] All right.
Seth Rogen [00:41:02] She has seen every other Fast and Furious.
June Diane Raphael [00:41:04] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:04] What a great. That must have been incredible.
June Diane Raphael [00:41:06] Shocking. Changed everything. I can’t wait to rewatch all of the others. Now that I know this, I’m like, oh, wow.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:16] Yep.
Paul Scheer [00:41:16] And two is like his journey of like. Like that’s where he goes and learns like he’s like. Now I’m out. Now I’m just in culture, but he’s because.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:24] He’s in it. But Vin isn’t.
Paul Scheer [00:41:25] Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:41:26] What?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:26] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:41:27] Vin doesn’t come back until four. He makes a cameo.
Seth Rogen [00:41:31] Four is the first one with all of them back. And the tagline for four is “new model, original parts.”.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:41:37] Yup.
Seth Rogen [00:41:41] Which, I don’t know how I feel being called a part.
Paul Scheer [00:41:44] Yeah. The first one is Vin and him. The second one is just Paul Walker meeting with some of the people you’ll see in the future. And then the third one is none of them and in Tokyo.
Seth Rogen [00:41:58] But introducing Sung Kang. Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:42:00] So why does Paul Walker leave the force in the second one?
Seth Rogen [00:42:04] You know, there’s an alternate ending to this one that was on the version I bought on iTunes. That was him quitting. It was him going back to Vin Diesel’s house again, which was funny because he’d already done it. And this time the handler was dropping him off. And Letty’s, there are not Letty, Jordanna Brewster, what’s her name?
Paul Scheer [00:42:23] Mia.
Seth Rogen [00:42:24] There you go. Yeah. And he’s like,Hey Mia. And then they’re like, Have you seen Dom? And she’s like, No, Dom split. Like, you’re a fucking cop still. And he’s like, I quit. And she’s like, Whoa. And then that’s the end.
Paul Scheer [00:42:37] Because, like, the second movie opens with, like, a little prolog that’s also like, it feels like a mix. I can’t remember it. I remember literally having a portable DVD player and watching it like that and being like oh yeah this is good.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:51] That you got that was stolen?
Paul Scheer [00:42:52] Yeah.
Seth Rogen [00:42:54] From some bald guy with no sleeves.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:57] I would love it if best Fast ten’s like promo material was a little DVD player with the movie inside.
Paul Scheer [00:43:05] By the way, what I would have loved, what I would have loved to like put him on the scent because at a certain point, Brian doesn’t know it’s Vin Diesel. Like at one point Vin could have been like, take a DVD player. Like, you never see them move the objects.
Seth Rogen [00:43:17] They don’t do shit with them. They don’t seemed to have that much money. They work at a sandwich shop and sell tuna sandwiches.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:24] Bad tuna sandwiches. They need Marcus Lemonis.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:28] When Brian. My favorite part was when Brian is in Jonny Trans’.
Seth Rogen [00:43:34] Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:35] Yes. Cave or whatever. That situation where.
Paul Scheer [00:43:37] Garage.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:39] Place of work.
Seth Rogen [00:43:40] Everybody has a garage.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:40] You think everybody’s everybody’s garage they call the cave?
June Diane Raphael [00:43:44] The man cave.
Seth Rogen [00:43:45] The car cave.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:46] Okay. I laughed so hard when he spots the VCR/DVDs and he looks at them. He can see clearly there’s a, there are columns of VCRs and DVDs. That’s not enough. He goes over and then he looks and continues to look like him processing the information that there is a VCR.
Paul Scheer [00:44:04] The box is so identifiable. Comically so.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:44:08] And it’s such a tell for the undercover cop to be like.
June Diane Raphael [00:44:13] That’s a VCR, that there’s another one and there’s another one over here. And that’s also.
Seth Rogen [00:44:21] What you doing over there, man? What you looking at?
Paul Scheer [00:44:23] Oh, by the way, this is what I’ll say. When the twist is that they’re bought legally. If you went to someone’s house and they had 60 DVD, I would walk over like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:44:37] Also, somehow Johnny Tran has legally purchased an enormous volume of the exact same Panasonic TV/VCR combo. But how is that possible?
Paul Scheer [00:44:51] He works for an agency here in Los Angeles and his boss is like, Hey, these we’re giving out these Christmas gifts to all my clients. Can you hold them in your garage?
June Diane Raphael [00:45:01] Is he somehow marking them up? Like, what could the profit possibly be?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:05] Yeah, what’s the point?
Paul Scheer [00:45:06] Tran is like, crazy Johnny. Like crazy Eddie like.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:10] Did he get some sort of a deal on a bulk order?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:13] I mean, in my mind, he had to have bought them from Vin.
Seth Rogen [00:45:16] Were they different ones all together?
June Diane Raphael [00:45:18] No, Jason.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:19] No, I know.
Seth Rogen [00:45:20] This movie’s in a world where VCRs are currency man.
Paul Scheer [00:45:24] What if what if it’s all tracked back to like early Internet purchasing? I thought I bought one. I bought 1000.
Seth Rogen [00:45:29] Clicked on the wrong thing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:31] TV VCRs were the original crypto.
Seth Rogen [00:45:34] How many do you have one? What if it brakes? You don’t have 47 spares?
June Diane Raphael [00:45:40] Paul knows this, but my dad used to only shop in like wholesale. For some reason. Someone gave him a wholesale license and he would only shop wholesale for us. So every Christmas we would open up like 12 boxes of yo-yos or.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:57] That sounds great.
Seth Rogen [00:45:58] The 12 yo-yos of Christmas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:59] I love that.
Seth Rogen [00:46:01] I’m not Christian, I’m Jewish. I’ve only heard of the 12 yo-yos of Christmas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:09] Nine yo-yos. Eight Yo-yos. Seven yo-yos.
Seth Rogen [00:46:13] As a Jewish person, we’ve always been like, it seems weird, but I guess if you’re saying that’s a thing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:18] But what’s interesting is and I’m not lying. Every year my mother gives me a yo yo for Christmas.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:24] Wow.
Seth Rogen [00:46:25] Just one?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:26] Just one.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:26] I’m so sorry.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:28] We are in the same club.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:29] Absolutely. Listen, when Slap Bracelets came out, I was like, I own 5700.
Paul Scheer [00:46:37] By the way, I will also tell you this. If you don’t want to drive yourself crazy and you have a child, never give them a yo yo. Because all my kids did with yo yo is really like, just drop. And they go, Dad, can you rewire it? I’m like *sighs* And you got to like click, drop and it’s like fuck, I throw it away. I threw it in the trash. I don’t know where it went. I lost it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:06] I’m going to start sending your sons yo-yos.
Paul Scheer [00:47:10] By the way, I did. I did such a purge and it felt so bad when they went to school the other day. I just got a trash bag out and I went in there. I was like, Let’s go.
June Diane Raphael [00:47:17] Oh, I love it.
Paul Scheer [00:47:18] I’ll just throw. It’s so fulfilling.
June Diane Raphael [00:47:20] It’s so great when they’re gone to get rid of all their shit. It really is.
Paul Scheer [00:47:25] They don’t realize it feels great. Cuckoo clock? They don’t give a shit about that cuckoo clock.
Seth Rogen [00:47:31] My dad still remembers every toy his mother threw away. It comes up every once in a while. They’ll be like a slinky on the floor. My dad will be like in 1965.
Paul Scheer [00:47:46] I want to play this scene of the cat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:48] It would be amazing if you could find, purchase and give him all of those toys.
Seth Rogen [00:47:52] Every single one. He’d be like, What’s this?
Seth Rogen [00:47:56] This is the cappuccino scene. But again, look at it through the eyes at this. This guy, the other cop who makes him so psyched about it, brought his own machine. And here we go. Here, go.
Movie Audio [00:48:05] Okay, let’s talk about it. Why don’t you make us for iced cappuccinos, please.
Movie Audio [00:48:14] Regular or decaf sarge?
Movie Audio [00:48:16] Four hijackings in two months. DVD players and digital cameras.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:28] Was it in the script? Was it in the script this way? Or they also it so.
June Diane Raphael [00:48:35] I don’t know for those not.
Seth Rogen [00:48:38] You’ve never seen a sadder guy with a nice cappuccino.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:41] You know and you know.
Paul Scheer [00:48:43] He’s not drinking the ice cap got you.
Seth Rogen [00:48:44] We put whipped cream on it, Brian. Come on.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:46] You know the DP was like, it would work better if he’s in the center of the frame. And they’re like, no, no, no, we need to see the cappuccino. Just left.
Seth Rogen [00:48:54] Paul could you put it closer to you?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:56] This is a two shot between him and the cappuccino. These are two of the main characters of this movie.
Paul Scheer [00:49:04] If we are following the the scene like the the camera here.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:10] What a terrible frame.
Paul Scheer [00:49:12] We we see the crotch of a policeman.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:14] This guy’s full midsection.
Seth Rogen [00:49:17] That’s objectively the worst part of a human male’s body.
Paul Scheer [00:49:24] Where the belt crosses.
Seth Rogen [00:49:25] Like right above the belly button to right below the balls. That’s what you’re looking for.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:33] You know, He’s like he’s like, I think I came in too early and they’re like, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to use it anyway. Do I have to drink this?
Paul Scheer [00:49:42] All I wanted from Ted Levine to have whipped cream on his nose for the majority of the scene.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:47] Yes. You know, he’s like, I don’t want to drink it. It’s going to get messy all over my face.
Paul Scheer [00:49:52] I feel like this is like a bit that happened on set. Like Rob Cohen was like, you know what?
June Diane Raphael [00:49:58] No, Paul, this was a part of the storytelling. It really was. This was like, Can we afford to be caffeinated right now and can our masculinity handle it or do we need to?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:10] It did feel to me a shot at the police to be like, here they are in a fancy house in the hills drinking fancy coffees.
Seth Rogen [00:50:22] This movie is anti cop. It is rooting for the cop to be like, fuck being a cop. Go.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:29] Yes. He helps the criminals get away and he quits the force.
Seth Rogen [00:50:35] By the way, that’s why these movies are so successful. Yeah, Honestly, a generation of people saw it, and we’re like, Fuck the cops.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:41] Yeah. They’re fancy pants, all of them.
Paul Scheer [00:50:45] They don’t even try to, like, smooth over like he’s not even, like, the bad guy with a heart of gold. Like, he he’s equally bad and the like. He’s doing all the bad shit, too.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:55] Okay, Can I. Can I distill it into two things? Right. The cops are fancy decaf. Iced cappuccinos. Our family, Coronas.
Seth Rogen [00:51:06] That’s it. Only Coronas.
June Diane Raphael [00:51:11] And Snapples, Snapples.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:12] And a Snapple for Mia.
Seth Rogen [00:51:13] And a Corona you took from another guy who was already drinking it. It’s a real honor.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:19] That is so gross. There’s no way I’m drinking Vince’s beer. No way. You’re definitely getting HPV from that corona.
June Diane Raphael [00:51:30] Okay, But I really do have to ask.
Seth Rogen [00:51:33] That’s why we put lime on there to kill the HPV. The human papilloma virus.
June Diane Raphael [00:51:37] Did. Did that Did it okay. Okay, if I if a man if I said to a man, I’d like something to drink, get me something to drink, anything cold. And if he came back with a Snapple, that was such a red flag, that was so distressing to me.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:58] Also, because she says, Let’s go get me a drink. That’s that’s what gets them to leave the tense situation. And then she’s got like a peach Snapple.
June Diane Raphael [00:52:07] He gets her. He decides that that is what she needs.
Paul Scheer [00:52:10] This movie is about beverages.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:11] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:52:12] It passes not the Bechdel test, but the beverel test.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:16] It’s got multiple type of beverages individually shown in scenes.
June Diane Raphael [00:52:22] It’s true and I was like, What? What are we saying here? That she doesn’t get to drink Corona because she’s more of a homemaker? We’ve seen her washing the dishes. We’ve seen her making a tuna sandwich like she can’t have a drink?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:35] Is it possible that the movie is positing that she is underage? Whoa.
Paul Scheer [00:52:41] Oh, well, because here it is. Vin Diesel is supposed to be 24.
Seth Rogen [00:52:45] What?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:46] She’s underage.
June Diane Raphael [00:52:48] What?!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:48] He’s legitimately. He’s 42 in the movie.
Paul Scheer [00:52:52] Vin Diesel was 34 when he made this movie but he’s playing 24.
Seth Rogen [00:52:58] I’m 24, yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:52:59] He’s 34 when he makes it.
Seth Rogen [00:53:01] I’m a little boy.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:03] I’m just 24. I just got out of school. Family.
Seth Rogen [00:53:08] I don’t know what’s what.
June Diane Raphael [00:53:10] Oh, that’s interesting. So you think they.
Paul Scheer [00:53:13] She’s definitely underage then.
Paul Scheer [00:53:15] Yeah, I think they’re saying.
June Diane Raphael [00:53:16] I didn’t know.
Seth Rogen [00:53:17] Se plays a nine year old. Why are you always ordering tuna sandwiches from this 9 year old girl?
Paul Scheer [00:53:23] Brian is 14 but Brian’s like 21 Jump Street.
June Diane Raphael [00:53:26] More upsetting because it’s like okay we’ve taken the care as a production to make sure she’s not drinking alcohol, but he fucks her.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:35] Yeah, yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:53:36] Just a few scenes later.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:38] And his bosses aren’t at all like, Why are you fucking underage sister of the guy you’re supposed to be getting?
Seth Rogen [00:53:45] Like, they’re stealing VCRs, man!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:47] And I’ve got to let them go.
Seth Rogen [00:53:49] The rules are out the window of this one. We’re stopping monsters.
Paul Scheer [00:53:56] I do want to just call out one piece of, like, interesting trivia here about that line at the house party. When Dom says to Brian, You can have any beer you want as long as it’s a corona, it is a reference to Henry Ford, because Henry Ford said you can have any color you want as long as it’s black.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:54:18] Oh with the Model T?
Paul Scheer [00:54:20] Yeah, the model T. So that was I mean look at the deep look, weaving it in to car history.
Seth Rogen [00:54:27] Henry Ford. Henry Ford also said Hitler was right.
Paul Scheer [00:54:32] Also a deleted scene. A deleted scene with Vince and Dom.
Seth Rogen [00:54:37] Vin why do you keep saying Hitler’s right? It’s a Henry Ford reference, what? I like Hitler. It’s a car thing. Hitler was right. No Vin. That’s not cool. That’s not good.
Paul Scheer [00:54:49] The Luftwaffe was only run on Nas plane.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:54:52] I want all of the cars to be Volkswagens. I did like when Johnny Tran waterboards a guy with car lube.
Seth Rogen [00:55:01] Yeah, that was crazy.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:55:02] Yeah, I was like, This is fucking Guantanamo Bay. That was like, really hard. There was a bunch of good things in here. What I really liked about the movie genuinely, is I was invested in the, again, bare bones crime story. As much as the racing and all that stuff. But the crime story was good in the sense that it kept you guessing who was the bad guy. It kept and everybody seemed capable of real violence. Go ahead. Sorry. You looked at me and I thought you were.
Paul Scheer [00:55:33] No, I was just listening to you. Yeah. No.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:55:36] Ugh.
Paul Scheer [00:55:37] Well, I mean, but by the way, if you’re talking about crime, what do you think is a better montage? You know that famous sequence in Goodfellas when everyone’s getting arrested to the Eric Clapton song or hear when Korn is playing and everyone’s getting busted?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:55:53] Wait, isn’t that also is that also the scene where Dom and Letty are having the motorboat scene?
Paul Scheer [00:56:00] Yeah. Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:00] That’s the same scene as the FBI raid on Johnny Tran.
Seth Rogen [00:56:03] [Motorboat Noises]
June Diane Raphael [00:56:05] Now, I’m going to say something about Dom.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:07] All it needed was the voiceover from Henry Hill style.
June Diane Raphael [00:56:10] Oh, well, the first time I’ve seen this movie. So having seen the other ones again, in no particular order, I always thought that the two of them had a love I’ve never known. That they had a.
June Diane Raphael [00:56:25] Dom and Letty?
June Diane Raphael [00:56:25] Yeah, totally. But now watching this, I’m like, He’s a fucking dick. Like, why is she protecting him? Why is she okay with this behavior over and over? He’s such a wondering eye.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:38] They’re just 24 years old. They’re they’re figuring it out.
June Diane Raphael [00:56:42] I guess. It just wasn’t.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:43] Everybody’s behaving insanely.
June Diane Raphael [00:56:46] Right, but I never saw in this movie, in their beginnings. I didn’t see that he really loved her. I mean, obviously, he was upset that she was, you know, almost killed in a car. But I didn’t see why they were such a wonderful match.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:57:01] What’s interesting is they seem to like, have figured each other out in a sense that he’s like in front of her saying to the other guys, So are there any chicks here tonight or whatever, blah, blah, blah, which sends her into a thing. And then she’s like, Why don’t we go upstairs and you give me a massage? And then. That’s what they do. That seems to be their foreplay.
June Diane Raphael [00:57:23] I will say that is what is always interesting about these movies to me, that these movies are very homo erotic. And then there in certain heterosexual relationships are also homo erotic. I can’t make heads or tails of this sexuality.
Paul Scheer [00:57:37] Brian and Mia was supposed to be the like the romantic love. That was supposed to be.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:57:44] They have the love story. And I do agree with you. And this is the end. I will say this is the beginning and the end of compelling sexuality inside of these movies.
Paul Scheer [00:57:53] Yes.
June Diane Raphael [00:57:54] Okay.
Seth Rogen [00:57:55] There’s no motor boating in any other Fast and Furious.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:57:57] You’ve seen, you’ve seen your last motorboat.
Paul Scheer [00:58:01] But there is motor boating in Hobbs and Shaw. I think Hobbs does it to Shaw.
Seth Rogen [00:58:06] You want me to bloody motor boat you? You could motorboat The Rock. Let me say that. And he would crush your fucking head.
Paul Scheer [00:58:16] My lips are broken. I didn’t even know that was possible.
Seth Rogen [00:58:19] How dare you motorboat me.
Paul Scheer [00:58:21] Oh, man, I. I want to go to the audience and see what they think about this movie, because I’m sure there are questions out there. So if you have a you have a good question. You have a thought in observation, something maybe about Nas or anything at all that you can bring to the table. Maybe you’re an extra, maybe you’re you’re an actor in it. Let us know.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:58:38] What I will say. Like background. Incredibly, in this movie background, all the people that are making up the big crowds at race wars, at that the other race in Los Angeles. They’re just normal people. It’s just a bunch of random.
Seth Rogen [00:58:53] They’re real. I was watching the behind the scenes. They’re the people who owned the cars and they put out notices where it’s like, are you a cool, do you have a cool fucking car? We’re doing a movie about cool cars. This is your fucking shit. If you want your cool fucking car in our movie, show up at this place and like hundreds of motherfuckers showed up with their cars. And those are the people.
Paul Scheer [00:59:12] By the way, I apologize if I already told the story on the podcast, but that’s what we did for Piranha 3D, where we said.
Seth Rogen [00:59:18] With piranhas though.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:59:22] Do you have a cool Piranha?
Paul Scheer [00:59:27] They still listen to the radio and they come out. No, but it was great. We would be driving around Lake Havasu and you’d hear, like if you were missing a limb, you should be an extra in this brand new movie Piranha 3D, because what they wanted to do is save money on the final attack scene. So if people were missing a limb, they could easily make them an attack victim. And I will say hundreds of people showed up.
June Diane Raphael [00:59:53] I do not know how to react.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:59:55] The people in this room are so uncomfortable at that story. And yet you all chanted race wars at the beginning of the show. You were so happy to say race wars, but now you’re like, Oh no, I can’t laugh at the amputee joke Paul told.
Paul Scheer [01:00:11] It’s not a joke. It’s a true story about how films are made.
Seth Rogen [01:00:17] Like if you are missing a limb and like hearing that other, hearing and ad start with an excited, are you missing a limb? You’d be like fuck yeah I am!
June Diane Raphael [01:00:27] You should ask.
Paul Scheer [01:00:28] All right. We got we have the maker of the Torreto shirts here. Pete. All right. What what do you got?
Audience Member [01:00:37] So, Pete, thank you. Thank you for doing this residency. So there are only two mentions of family in this movie, one where Tran says he was disrespected when the SWAT raided it. And the second is Brian’s boss, saying how Brian needs to choose. So none of the people that we know as promoting family in the later movies have no mention.
Paul Scheer [01:00:59] So you think that dumb co-opted family from Johnny Tran?
Paul Scheer [01:01:03] Oh, this guys freaking out Paul.
Audience Member [01:01:03] Because the whole living a quarter mile at a time at the end of that line, he says it’s 10 seconds. Nothing matters. Not the mortgage, not the shop, not the team. So it’s just interesting.
Paul Scheer [01:01:20] So they went and they retconned the family?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:01:23] The next line is for those 10 seconds. I’m free.
Paul Scheer [01:01:29] Wow.
Seth Rogen [01:01:29] Free from my family.
June Diane Raphael [01:01:33] You’re right.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:01:33] It really resonates with her.
June Diane Raphael [01:01:37] I do think the cops speak to family. Is that what you said? Yes. The cops speak to family in a in a very impactful way.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:01:44] But we do get the first of many iconic picnic table time to say grace.
June Diane Raphael [01:01:50] Great. It was great.
Seth Rogen [01:01:52] Oh, yeah. I would argue they “show, don’t tell” the family stuff with Vin. Like they are a family. Whether he likes it or not. Well, 10 seconds. He’s thinking about family.
Paul Scheer [01:02:02] I think that what they did was gravity was what they were going for, and they realized family was better because it’s like Dom is gravity. He pulls everybody in.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:02:12] Everything gets pulled to him.
Paul Scheer [01:02:14] Which is not as cool of a metaphor.
Seth Rogen [01:02:18] You could tell that scene where he’s walking around the car, like making fun of Brian. Like, that was the greatest day of Vin Diesel’s life. Like when there was like 200 people paid to laugh at his jokes and like, really, like, pay attention to him and think he was like, where the direction everyone got was like, This is the coolest fucking guy you’ve ever seen.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:02:36] Everything he says, explode.
Seth Rogen [01:02:39] And you can see that day he was like, I’m going to make these movies for 24 years.
Paul Scheer [01:02:47] Okay. Yes. Your name and your question.
Audience Member [01:02:48] My name is Kayla. And my question is, do you guys have any insight of what happened? Because the woman in the first race, she goes up to Ja Rule, puts he puts her hand his hand on her tits, and is like whether you win or lose.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:03] I, I have absolute recall for this moment.
Audience Member [01:03:07] Win or lose, this is yours. But if you win, you get her two. And then after the race, this white woman says the N-word, and then is like you lost bitch. So I’m just confused because she just told him that it didn’t matter if he won or lost.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:21] No. She says, if you win this. Oh, I says, you see. But if you win.
Paul Scheer [01:03:28] You get her.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:28] Right.
June Diane Raphael [01:03:29] It seemed like she wasn’t totally honest.
Seth Rogen [01:03:32] Woah, that woman was a poor moral character. She was a racist, but willing to offer Ja Rule a threesome in exchange for winning a street race.
Paul Scheer [01:03:45] I will also say that that street race I know that there was.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:48] That exact same thing happened to me outside of Largo before the show.
Seth Rogen [01:03:53] If this podcast is funny, you get me.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:57] If you can get everybody to chant race wars, then you can have her too.
Seth Rogen [01:04:01] Here’s the here’s your objective.
Paul Scheer [01:04:05] There are a couple of things about that race, the street race one, which is like, okay, I like the idea that they listen to the police scanner to find out when the police are busy.
Seth Rogen [01:04:15] Good news guys, there’s a murder in Glendale.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:04:17] I thought I thought for sure they would have built. They would have. Why wouldn’t you? If you want to have the race happen, why wouldn’t you cause problems as far away as possible for the police?
Seth Rogen [01:04:30] No they’re just waiting for a murder.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:04:31] Just waiting.
Seth Rogen [01:04:32] Hey, guys. If we’re lucky, there’ll be another murder. We can drive our cars around in the wake of a murder.
Paul Scheer [01:04:39] But they’re waiting. Like the way that you’re supposed to wait. Like a cell phone, like airport parking lot. Like they’re all just lined up in the street, like you would think of any cop of, like, Oh, shit. What? It’s like 500 cars here.
Paul Scheer [01:04:52] You guys going to race? Nah.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:04:54] Well, there’s. This is a movie with no, like, uniformed police. It’s only undercover. And like, detectives and feds. There’s no cop cars. There’s no there’s no, like, street level police presence whatsoever.
June Diane Raphael [01:05:10] They can no longer afford it because of this operation.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:05:13] Well, there’s even on the highways, there’s none of this stuff in any of the robberies. There’s never police, which is incredibly insane.
Paul Scheer [01:05:21] All right. Your name, your question.
Audience Member [01:05:25] My name’s John. So when they’re, they have their, like, flashy racing cars, but when they’re doing the crimes, they have the all black Hondas, but they’ve installed fluorescent green ground effects on their stealth cars. What? Why?
Paul Scheer [01:05:40] Right. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the defining things that they could use to that they they they they call it out. Yeah, you’re right. That’s the suspicion.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:05:49] The answer is because it’s fucking cool.
Seth Rogen [01:05:53] Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, I’ve worked with Neil Moritz, the producer of the Fast and Furious Films. He was in the movie for one second. He’s in that. He’s in the scene where they’re like, how much does the Ferrari costs or some shit. There’s so many parts in this movie. You’re like, That’s a producer of the movie. That’s the producer of the movie, that’s a producer of the movie. Like why else would that guy be on this fucking thing?
Paul Scheer [01:06:13] The pizza guy is Rob Cohen.
Seth Rogen [01:06:14] Rob Cohen’s the pizza guy. But I’ve worked with Neil Moritz. He. I mean, I bet if he produced the Green Hornet and honestly, he produces, I produced The Boys with him and Preacher and I’ve done a lot of stuff with him over the years, so I know him pretty well and when we were making The Green Hornet. There was an argument over a part of the movie and it was like me and Michel Gondry and him and Evan, my partner, all like arguing over something, and Neil like hit the table. And he goes, Listen, there’s logic and there’s cool and cool wins every time.
Paul Scheer [01:06:47] I’m not going to disagree.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:06:49] Holy shit. That’s also a T-shirt.
Paul Scheer [01:06:54] Wow. Wow.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:06:56] That could be. That’s like.
Seth Rogen [01:06:58] Like, fuck yeah!
Jason Mantzoukas [01:07:00] That’s like, wow, that’s huge. That could be the tagline of any movie we’ve ever done.
Paul Scheer [01:07:07] I love that, though, because it is true. It’s like you like it. Like all it needs to do is work in the moment if you don’t question it. That was cool.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:07:15] Oh, yeah, it’s cool. Oh, that’s great.
Seth Rogen [01:07:18] It was amazing.
Paul Scheer [01:07:20] Okay, you’re hey, what’s going on? How are you?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:07:22] Hey, Tim.
Paul Scheer [01:07:24] All right, So, Tim, what’s your question?
Audience Member [01:07:27] If you are an undercover cop in the LAPD and you need to triangulate the location of a cell phone is the person you call who can confirm your identity as a police officer and provide the pertinent information customer service at Nextel?
Paul Scheer [01:07:42] Yeah, you’re right.
June Diane Raphael [01:07:45] So. So he’s just calling his cell phone provider?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:07:52] And she’s like, How can I help you?
June Diane Raphael [01:07:54] He does seem to get it done.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:07:55] By the way. And he’s like, Here’s my police badge number. And she’s like, okay.
Seth Rogen [01:08:01] It’s on a Post-it on my computer.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:08:02] Can Nextel do a trace on a cell phone number?
Paul Scheer [01:08:07] But the other thing was like, it seemed like that was a big part of it. Just give me his number. Like, that’s what you were trying to find out?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:08:14] If I’m in a car and I push OnStar. Can I be like, I need a location on Paul Scheer’s Cell phone.
Paul Scheer [01:08:20] We got it.
Seth Rogen [01:08:21] And they’ll be like, Are you a cop? Yep. All right.
Paul Scheer [01:08:24] He’s at subway again?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:08:27] It’s me, boss. I need a location.
Seth Rogen [01:08:31] Must be a good tuna day at Subway, cause he’s back there.
Paul Scheer [01:08:35] Oh, man.
Paul Scheer [01:08:36] Oh, man. Your name and your question.
Audience Member [01:08:38] My name is Krystal. Also it’s my husband and I, our first time out of the house on a date night since we had a baby 11 months ago.
Paul Scheer [01:08:46] Congratulations.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:08:46] What’s the baby’s name? And is it Dom?
Audience Member [01:08:49] Yeah, of course, Dom Torreto. Our last name is not Torreto, but we decided now his name is Brady. He should be asleep by now. But.
Paul Scheer [01:08:56] But he’ll be listening. Hopefully so He’ll appreciate the shoutout.
Audience Member [01:08:59] So I read somewhere that Timothy Olyphant passed on the role of Dominic Toretto, and he was allegedly quoted as saying, I just thought, Well, this will just be stupid. And I thought, No one is going to want to see this movie eight or nine different times. So my question is, as we reflect on Fast one and we approach Fast ten, if you could, how would you incorporate Timothy Olyphant into the franchise?
Paul Scheer [01:09:22] Oh, a great question.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:09:23] Easy bring in Marshal Raylan Givens.
Paul Scheer [01:09:28] He would be a great Bad. A great like a bad guy for them as a good guy.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:09:33] He would be a great addition. I’m surprised he was.
Seth Rogen [01:09:36] Are we sure he’s not in one of these?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:09:38] I would be shocked. He would also be a good a good person in the Kurt Russell. Mr. Nobody. In that world that sometimes comes into it. He would be good in that role.
Paul Scheer [01:09:49] Well, by the way, we talk about casting there, and I wanted to come up to talk about this because Rob Cohen’s original casting choices. Mario Lopez as Dom. Mark-paul Gosselaar as Brian and Dustin Diamond as Jesse and the studio passed because they thought the reteaming of the Saved by the Bell audience would be confusing.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:10:21] No, there’s no way.
Paul Scheer [01:10:25] That’s the research I got. I mean, there’s a lot. Mark Wahlberg then at one point, Christian Bale, Eminem, a lot of people went through it. Mia Toretto was originally written for Eliza Dushku, but she turned it down.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:10:40] That’s great. Would’ve been great.
Seth Rogen [01:10:41] That would have been great.
Paul Scheer [01:10:42] Vin Diesel wouldn’t sign on immediately, and it took several script changes. So to go back to street wars versus race wars, that might have been it.
Seth Rogen [01:10:53] Can we add more edge to the name of this race?
Paul Scheer [01:10:56] And and this is the other one, too, which was at one point the studio really wanted Colin Farrell to be Dom.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:11:03] Oh, yeah, that was I’m on board for that.
Seth Rogen [01:11:05] I like that too. Yeah. Yeah, it was post, uh, that movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:11:08] But there is like, there is perhaps no greater like a, like, true like synthesis of actor and role. Then Vin Diesel into Dom Toretto.
Paul Scheer [01:11:23] Star making performance.
Seth Rogen [01:11:24] If you ask him are you Dominic Toretto.
Paul Scheer [01:11:27] Which I did.
June Diane Raphael [01:11:29] Paul did and he answered.
Seth Rogen [01:11:30] I bet he didn’t bat an eye.
Paul Scheer [01:11:33] He answered and I felt embarrassed that I didn’t even stop myself to apologize because he just went with it.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:11:38] It’s the same as I feel, as though he would answer to hey, Dom. The same way that I feel like Stallone would respond to Hey, rock, You know, to just they feel completely synonymous.
June Diane Raphael [01:11:54] Yes. I think that that the actor and the role they’ve completely there is now no difference.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:12:00] Correct. Because he’s been doing it for 20 plus years.
Paul Scheer [01:12:05] It’s so crazy. Well, obviously, we have an opinion about this movie that it fucking rules, but we also want to hear some second opinions. So it is now time for second opinions.
Audience Member [01:12:19] Well, this film I liked it quite a bit. I don’t know why you called it shit. Because of my favorites. This is one I guess that’s my second opinion. Yeah, I guess that’s my second opinion.
Paul Scheer [01:12:45] Give it up for Stephanie. Here you go.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:12:47] Perfect.
Paul Scheer [01:12:49] Amazing. Great job.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:12:51] Great job.
Seth Rogen [01:12:53] I was great.
Paul Scheer [01:12:53] Way to go. These are five star reviews on Amazon. As you know, people love this movie. 19,000 reviews, 84% are five star. Only 2% are one star. Boy, oh, boy. They’re all, here is the one thing. Sometimes when you read these reviews, you’ll see something that pops up. These are all caps. I’ve never seen it wildly all caps. This one starts out.
Seth Rogen [01:13:24] They’re Furious.
Paul Scheer [01:13:26] Boss Man writes, “This is the first movie, very gritty and intense. It’s my opinion this is the best movie. A lot of substance. The newer one’s got more special effects but lacks good story and substance. Rest in peace, John Walker. Five stars.”.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:13:56] Rest in peace. Walker, Texas Ranger.
Seth Rogen [01:14:03] It’s sad that guy also lost a guy named John Walker.
Paul Scheer [01:14:07] Mr. Lynch writes this.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:14:11] David Lynch reviewed this movie?
Paul Scheer [01:14:12] Mr. Lynch writes “Movie was great addition to franchise.” It’s the first one. So there we go.
Seth Rogen [01:14:26] It is it is a great addition.
June Diane Raphael [01:14:30] Honestly for me and the way that I watched it, it was a nice addition.
Seth Rogen [01:14:35] June wrote that review?
Paul Scheer [01:14:35] You see them and they work. That’s the other thing about it.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:14:37] I would believe that coming from David Lynch. Great addition to franchise.
Paul Scheer [01:14:47] Samantha Connor writes, “The actors. Five stars.” And then we’ll end on this one. The title is called Homo Erotic Post Structuralist Canon. And and it says “pretty good would have been hotter if the dudes actually made out five stars.”
June Diane Raphael [01:15:15] Agreed.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:15:16] If they weren’t cowards, they would let that happen.
Paul Scheer [01:15:19] I mean, I feel like Momoa is simply in this movie for the chance of someone to make out with.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:15:26] We talked about, we talked about it in the breakdown of the trailer when we watched it for the Last Looks episode. All we want is for them to kiss at the end.
Paul Scheer [01:15:33] I want Momoa to kiss somebody. This movie has been translated into many different languages and that’s what we got in Canada it’s called Fast and Dangerous. In Finland.
Seth Rogen [01:15:44] That’s not true.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:15:44] Wait a minute.
June Diane Raphael [01:15:44] Seth. Seth.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:15:51] Why did you guys do that?
Seth Rogen [01:15:53] That is not true.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:15:55] That’s why Canada is bullshit. Because they think Furious is dangerous and they’re wrong.
Paul Scheer [01:16:04] It is as rapid e dangerous.
Seth Rogen [01:16:07] Well maybe in Montreal. All okay.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:16:10] Oh, wow.
Paul Scheer [01:16:12] In Finland, the title translates to Crazy Heads.
Seth Rogen [01:16:17] I like that.
Paul Scheer [01:16:19] In Greece, Jason, it’s called The Street Fighters.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:16:23] Done. Done. What exactly is one?
Paul Scheer [01:16:29] Hungary. It’s called At Deadly Pace. Lithuania, It’s Fast.
Seth Rogen [01:16:36] Let me guess what it’s called in Germany. Race Wars! This is our shit.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:16:48] Finally, finally, a movie gets us.
Paul Scheer [01:16:56] I mean, this movie is.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:16:57] Like all the German reviews are misleading.
Seth Rogen [01:17:01] [German Accent] I don’t care for it. It was about cars.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:17:06] [German Accent] Came for the race was too many cars.
Seth Rogen [01:17:10] [German Accent] There were some Volkswagens and Fords, which we like. Hail Henry. In general, misleading.
Paul Scheer [01:17:21] Oh, my God, this movie is awesome.
Seth Rogen [01:17:24] [German Accent] Paul Walker looked perfect.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:17:31] It’s really true. He is like a shining Aryan in the movie.
Seth Rogen [01:17:37] I was looking at him and being like, I get it.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:17:41] He is the ubermensch.
Seth Rogen [01:17:45] I get why they hate us. This is better.
Paul Scheer [01:17:49] He’s an attractive guy. There it is. Brian Earl. Oh, my gosh. This movie’s awesome. There’s no doubt about that. We. We recommended. I think we can. I can unanimously speak for everybody. Yeah, Come on. Where it goes is so wild. There was a moment where we were going to do a Fast and Furious movie a night here, but I thought it would be too much. Now, after watching this, I don’t think it would be. They’re kind of fun. This one’s really, really good.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:18:15] Oh, it’s great. And it. I feel like it that you get a taste of the future of the franchise at the very end, when Dom flies off in his dad’s car, rolls the car numerous times, lands upright. Revealed to be not wearing a seatbelt and is fine. He would have exploded inside of that car.
June Diane Raphael [01:18:38] But even that scene, he. He was fine. But he did seem kind of in pain, which I was shocked by because I had never seen his character. Yeah. Revealed a humiliating as being hurt.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:18:50] Well, in later movies. He’s like, I’m Wolverine.
June Diane Raphael [01:18:53] Exactly.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:18:55] That whole ending. All of. I just loved it. I just. I want to. I know we’re wrapping up and I. I’m grasping at straws because genuinely, I want to keep talking about the movie. And that’s what’s funny. I don’t have anything else to say.
June Diane Raphael [01:19:11] Same, Jason. I was like, I’m actually I think I want to watch these movies. Obviously, I have apparently seen a bunch of them, but.
Seth Rogen [01:19:20] You talk about like six of them.
June Diane Raphael [01:19:22] Yeah. Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:19:23] But you for sure have a bunch you have not seen.
June Diane Raphael [01:19:25] I haven’t seen. And now I want. Now that I know that.
Paul Scheer [01:19:28] Did you come see it with us when we went to go see it in rumble seats. Number four.
June Diane Raphael [01:19:32] I don’t think I saw it in rumble seats.
Paul Scheer [01:19:33] We found the only theater in L.A. at that point. That was doing D box. It was called. We went to Mann’s Chinese Theater. We signed the poster of the D Box movie theater because we were the only four people there at midnight to watch Fast and Furious four, which is the boringest one. Yeah, you weren’t there.
June Diane Raphael [01:19:51] I wasn’t there at midnight, but now. But it just reignited. Well, I guess started because there was never really a passion for this. But I am now very curious and very interested in seeing the rest in order.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:20:03] Yeah, and I think we’re going to do it, I think because I’m on board for doing that in the lead up too.
June Diane Raphael [01:20:08] Because you know, Jason, Paul obviously has Unspooled, but maybe you and I break off.
Paul Scheer [01:20:14] Wow.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:20:15] What? What now? Hear me out. What if our new podcast Funspooled launches one quarter mile at a time? What if our podcast is called One Quarter Mile at a Time?
June Diane Raphael [01:20:30] Let’s do it.
Paul Scheer [01:20:34] Oh, my God. All right.
Seth Rogen [01:20:36] I like that they drove everywhere in a V formation. I wrote that. And for some reason, my favorite line of the movie is he beats he beats Hector, and Hector goes, Hey. They call me Hector. That’s like your name. It’s like, But that’s just a name.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:20:53] Hey, they call me Hector, but my name is Bruce.
Seth Rogen [01:20:58] They’re super racist. Hence the race wars. Yeah, they assume my name is Hector. It’s not.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:21:03] My name. My name is Gary Rabinowitz. But everybody here calls me Hector. I wish they wouldn’t.
Paul Scheer [01:21:09] Well wait, doesn’t he also say My name is Hector. And my last name I can’t pronounce.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:21:18] He does say that too. I just imagine being that actors walking up to the director, Rob Cohen, and being like, Hey, I’m not sure how to play this line where, I don’t know, as a grown man, how to pronounce my last name. What do you think my character means by that?
Paul Scheer [01:21:44] By the way, I know that actor. We worked together on a TV series.
Seth Rogen [01:21:47] He’s an amputee. He showed up on the set of Piranha.
Paul Scheer [01:21:52] I would I would bet his real name is Hector. And I would bet money that that was completely improvised.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:22:01] Great.
Paul Scheer [01:22:02] 100%. Lovely guy. A lovely guy. All right. Well, thank you all for coming out here tonight. What a pleasure to go back back to the beginning of this amazing franchise. Good night, everybody! Bye, bye!
Paul Scheer [01:22:23] Thank you to Seth and thank you all for listening. We have a very special shirt. If you were in attendance at that show, you’ll know what it means. We had to cut a majority of it out, but you’ll get the drift of it. If you go to Teepublic.com, you will see a very special Fast and Furious shirt. It’s on sale right now, and I think it works even if you don’t know what it references. But it is on sale right now. Go to teepublic.com/stores/HDTGM. Okay. So that brings us to the end. Make sure that you call in with anything that we might have missed it’s 619-PAULASK. I’m talking about any corrections, any omissions or just thoughts about, you know, what Fast and Furious can be. And as always, we want to hear your best tagline for Fast and Furious. So submit that on Discord at Discord.gg/HDTGM. And if you are coming to the May 26 Fast Ten show at Largo, we suggest coming in costume. That’s right. Put on a costume. Come see us. We’ll be in costume. You should be in costume, too. That’s May 26, live at Largo. But this show, what you’re listening to right here, couldn’t be done without a couple of things. First of all, you listening. But more importantly, I’m talking about the amazing producorial work of Scott Sonne, Molly Reynolds and our movie picking producer, Avril Halley, our engineer Alex Gonzalez, and our publisher July Diaz. People, they make the trains run and we love them. So we will see you next week for Last Looks. And until then, bye for now.
