We are in Minnesota for the first time ever in the heart of Minneapolis to talk about one of the best Christmas movies ever made. The year, 2019. The topic, Social media Influencers. Really gets to the heart of what Christmas is all about. Like follow. Subscribe. All of those things come into play. I will say this when you hear the title Beauty and the Beast Christmas, It’s not to be confused with the Disney one with Paul Reubens and Tim Curry as an evil organ. No, no. This is a different kind of beauty and the beast. As a matter of fact, I would say if you’re familiar with the story of Beauty and the Beast, it shares very little with that. So much so that I was waiting for. Who’s the beauty and who’s the beast? I think I know I don’t want to break it down any more than that, but all I will say is two flailing social media stars find a perfect union. It’s weird. Again, that’s enough. That’s enough information if you haven’t seen it. We’ll break it all down. But first, let me introduce my co-host. Please welcome to the stage Mr. Jason Mantzoukas.

June Diane Raphael [00:05:03] I’m okay. I’m okay. It’s so hard. You know, I. I love the holidays. I love Christmas. I love. I loved it all until today when I had to see this movie. And I’m really concerned because we’ve done two Christmas movies in the last four days. And, um, I am. I was getting close to getting in the spirit, and now I hate Christmas. It’s dumb. It’s to much.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:35] Both movies made me want to become a Scrooge or a Grinch.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:37] And Jason, you and I backstage last night were talking about the holidays. What we love about the holidays, We’re talking about our ornaments. We’re talking about our trees.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:46] Our traditions, how much we love the holidays.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:49] We’re talking about Paul’s Christmas village.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:52] And and today I was like, I’ll be dead by then.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:55] Oh, I don’t wanna. I don’t want.

Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:06] Well, I’m not going to lie. This was chilling on every single level and how much of I believe an accurate portrayal of influencer lifestyle it is, is its most scathing indictment.

Paul Scheer [00:07:46] We did. We did a movie called Open Marriage. Right? It was about like the couple that decided that they were going to have an open marriage. And then one gets obsessed with the other one and they get shot in the head.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:00] What? I don’t think so. Wait. Oh, wait, wait. The one with the underground sex club?
Paul Scheer [00:08:08] Yes.
June Diane Raphael [00:08:08] Is this one? Wait a second. Is this the one where it all takes place in, like, a photographer’s loft? Yes. Okay, great. Great.
Paul Scheer [00:08:15] Slightly, because you’re also.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:18] What do you mean, slightly?
Paul Scheer [00:08:18] Because there’s also the one with the high school photography. That’s different. Okay. That is the photographer who is obsessed. This is two couples, the underground sex club. And one gets more into it than the other.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:36] And this is just to identify who.
June Diane Raphael [00:08:39] Larissa.
Paul Scheer [00:08:40] Larissa. Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:42] The other woman?
Paul Scheer [00:08:43] Yes. But I will say this.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:46] You. I’m so sorry. Just to have gotten all the way there. And I want to just go back to the beginning because you said you jumped up. You jumped up. That is that connotes a level of excitement and surprise. That is. I’ll be honest. Shocking.
Paul Scheer [00:09:04] I was like, Oh, shit. The girl from over there.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:08] You did the Leo meme? I know what it is.
Paul Scheer [00:09:15] I was I was excited to see her because I thought that she was great. I thought she brought a lot to this. But again, I don’t want to go off on Larissa because she comes in in the third act. The question I wanted to ask you was this. And this is an honest, earnest question. Is this a comedy or is it not? Because I’m watching it and at points I’m like, Oh, it’s a comedy. And then immediately after I’m like, I don’t think it is like I. I don’t know if these choices like, yes, there are jokes, but then there was like, Is it meta? It’s not meta. I don’t think it’s meta.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:53] There are, I believe, moments of meta commentary that I don’t know if people are in on or not. Simply by the nature of doing this, they are at certain points just absolutely making fun of what it is they are doing. I think someone is, even though the edit is being cruel to them or I’m not sure what, but there is a level of insanity that’s happening in this movie that I would also believe if you told me none of these people knew they were being filmed. And they were just people having like psychic breaks that they were like, influencers gone wild.
Paul Scheer [00:10:31] Well, the beginning of this movie really hurt my brain because when you meet Ginger Holliday, it looks like I don’t know what’s happening. Right. Because there’s no blocking or framing to let you know, this is like a YouTube video. But watch this. This is like this. The opening scene fucked me up. Clip one.
Movie Audio [00:10:56] Hi, I’m Ginger Holliday. It’s only 207 days till Christmas, but that’s not too soon to start celebrating all the merriness, all of the brightness, the festive festivities.
Paul Scheer [00:11:08] And I’m like, okay, she’s talking to me.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:17] Yeah. Pause for a second. This is not her YouTube channel, babe.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:20] Yeah, this is heart to heart. The TV channel.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:22] This is a package. Yeah. This is where it gets confusing and why your brain broke. This is a TV package about her.
Paul Scheer [00:11:30] But she’s talking directly to camera. I thought, Oh, we’re watching. Like an Our Town.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:34] I believe. I believe both are true.
Paul Scheer [00:11:36] Okay.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:37] No, no, I’m sorry. I don’t believe both are true. I believe this is meant to simulate what her content is, but there is a now a voiceover on top of it, which is the heart to heart. Which is a channel I subscribe to under Amazon Prime. It is top notch entertainment news. They cover only the characters in Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movies. Just the characters lives.
Paul Scheer [00:12:07] And that’s part of the agreement. When you sign up to do a lifetime of you have to act like like Sacha Baron Cohen. You have to be Ali G and you have to go around and do you have to.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:15] By the way, though, this is not a Lifetime movie.
Paul Scheer [00:12:19] It’s an Ion movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:20] And I but I want to clarify that because we must put some respect on the Lifetime holiday franchise.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:27] I agree. I agree.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:30] Okay. Because their holiday movies are are shot in Vancouver, I think. And they are shot in cold Christmasy towns.
Paul Scheer [00:12:40] Or at least they put some snow on the ground.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:43] This movie is not interested in Christmas vibes at all. Here’s what they’ve got. Access to a legitimate mansion. Yeah. And $40 worth of dollar store Christmas decorations.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:56] And it’s so hard because.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:58] That’s what they got.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:59] That was the budget. When are we going to talk about her rash?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:06] Oh. I mean, her rash. You know what? We can talk about it now because that will allow us at least 2 hours to talk about how the fact that she has never been kissed. This lead character has never dot, dot, dot been kissed. I wrote in my notes, Is she a virgin? And then cut to She’s never been kissed?
June Diane Raphael [00:13:35] Yes, definitely a virgin.
Paul Scheer [00:13:36] It makes a lot of sense because this character, I can’t find my way in or out of her. I’m like, What is.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:44] Any adult woman who wears colored stockings multiple days in a row is a virgin.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:53] Here’s the thing. If you’re dressed like a fuckin candy cane.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:56] Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:56] Hard pass.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:59] This woman is so deeply unwell.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:04] As as somebody who’s obsessed with Christmas 365 and makes Christmas their identity.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:11] Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:12] And puts it primarily over fucking.
Paul Scheer [00:14:17] I would argue all relationships. All relationships.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:22] Well, except for her relationship with Kensington.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:25] Yes.
Paul Scheer [00:14:27] What is Kensington? Is Kensington a butler?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:30] I wrote. I started writing down every single thing Kensington did to be like, What is what capacity is she here in? Can everyone see her? Is he invisible? What is going on?
June Diane Raphael [00:14:42] I thought the too at one point I was like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:45] Because almost nobody talks to her.
Paul Scheer [00:14:47] No.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:48] She’s truly, during the food fight scene and we were jumping all around. But during that scene, inexplicably, Kensington walks in to it and starts to get in on the action.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:00] I think in these kind of wholesome movies, Food fight is the sex scene. This is my pitch. They get to touch on each other. They get to do all sorts of business with each other physically. And it’s got it’s charged because there is no sex scene. We’re never going to build to that. I think the food fight is the Hallmark movie, the wholesome movies version of.
June Diane Raphael [00:15:26] Not a Hallmark movie, though.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:27] To be clear, this Ion original. Is that what this is? I don’t want to misrepresent it. But Minneapolis, did you guys make this? Is Ion a local company?
Paul Scheer [00:15:42] But here’s what I’ll argue to you. The idea of, like, a fun, sexy food fight is disgusting to me.
June Diane Raphael [00:15:50] So gross.
Paul Scheer [00:15:50] Like, I don’t want to be covered in mashed potatoes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:55] A food fight as foreplay? I also don’t like it when people feed each other’s stuff. Go wash your hands.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:04] GROSS.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:05] Get away from me, you monster.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:09] I also feel like her version of Christmas that she’s into is so fucking weird. It’s like she’s into and there are certain, like the Dickensian Christmas. There’s certain types of the carolers, all that that I can I can get down with. But her Christmas interests are so bizarre. And stiff.
Paul Scheer [00:16:30] But let’s be honest, though. She’s creating 365 days of content for Christmas since she’s 13. At this point, it’s going to go off the rails. She’s got to be like, Hey, alright, cranberry underwear! We’re doing it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:48] This movie exists at a level where she has such. The the weight of her audiences, her influencer audience weighs so heavily on her as to rob Christmas. Where they say, well you’ve been gone for a month, answer for yourself.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:05] But can I say something? I want to say something about her content calendar because I was confused as to why she didn’t bank extra content.
Paul Scheer [00:17:17] Oh, June.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:17] Seems insane, especially in the lead up to the gala.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:22] We got a lot going on!
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:24] Can I ask a quick question? And I don’t often like to like ask status kind of questions, but have you guys ever been invited to her gala?
Paul Scheer [00:17:32] I mean, that’s the thing. I always think we’re going to get an invite and we never get one. I mean, June, you got one, but you didn’t get a you didn’t get a plus one.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:39] No.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:39] I got one one year. But it said you can only come at midnight.
Paul Scheer [00:17:43] See, that’s it.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:44] So I would like to spend roughly the next hour and a half discussing the logistics and the infrastructure and the mission of her charity.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:56] Yes. Yes, Yes, and it’s unparalleled success. 20. She’s building 20 homes a year. That is a level of success. That is astronomical.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:12] Here’s what I didn’t understand, though, here.
Paul Scheer [00:18:14] When I heard 20 homes, there is a part. This is when I wrote down, is this a comedy or is it not? Because I understood it to be. She was creating 20 homes for Christmas Day and then kicking them back out.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:31] So I don’t think that’s true. But what is unresolved? So it’s a great quote. There’s so many questions about this charity.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:39] Please. Please look into it. Please, Better Business Bureau, whoever investigates, look into this charity, because I got to be honest, that home is pretty stately.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:52] One of the things that I couldn’t understand is, she says the reason why she wants to do it is because every and I think this is where you are confused is because nobody should be alone over the holidays. And so, yeah, you are forced to ask the question, is it a home just for the holidays? And then are you Airbnbing it? What I couldn’t understand is who’s with the foster children in the home? Who’s with them? What’s the what is it? How does that work?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:21] What’s the infrastructure? And are these these are foster children who can’t find homes. So aren’t these just thought orphans? Isn’t she making orphanages? And doesn’t that make her a villain? Now. Hear me out. Hear me out! 365 days a year. He creates content just so people help her build kid prisons.
Paul Scheer [00:19:48] She’s a modern day Fagan. This is Oliver Twist.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:52] Actually, I was watching this movie and thinking, like, how fucked the foster care system is in the United States. And I was like, You know what? You fucking bitch. Take that money and give it to the families so they can keep kids in their homes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:08] But June.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:09] So they don’t have to become foster kids.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:11] But June, the outfit she wears to the gala, breaks the Internet every year. Her outfit breaks the Internet.
Paul Scheer [00:20:22] In this world. She is as popular as Kim Kardashian. Right. But only in the.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:30] 20 million followers. That’s a lot.
Paul Scheer [00:20:32] But now, here’s the thing that I will say. This movie is as confusing as the advent calendar used to delineate where we are at in the movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:45] Agree.
Paul Scheer [00:20:46] I have seen the advent calendar be used as a scene transition device. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. It makes sense. We’re getting closer to it. This seems like we’re months out. Day 17. Over here. Up over here. It’s like they only had one Advent calendar and like, Yeah, how does it work? We don’t know if it’s going up. It’s going down. It’s going sideways. I don’t know where we are in the world.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:13] Well, because she’s somebody who celebrates Christmas every day, which is psychotic. It’s psychotic. And I have friends who have all their Christmas stuff up already. We just talked about it yesterday.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:25] Oh, we named names.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:26] We named names yesterday.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:27] Some boldfaced names were discussed.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:30] Paul and I are Christmas traditionalist. We don’t put our tree up till the day after Thanksgiving, but we support. I used to think I supported, like whatever people wanted to do, you know?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:43] And I told you, I keep my tree up until late January or Valentines day.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:48] And I was concerned about.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:50] When I need to burn stuff.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:52] But I was like, You know what? Jason needs it up that long. Like, that’s fine, That’s great. Kullop needs it up this early. That’s fine, that’s great. And I do. I feel I’ve had a pretty open heart.
Paul Scheer [00:22:05] I said you have to.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:07] You talked to her?
Paul Scheer [00:22:09] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:09] Like you scolded her?
Paul Scheer [00:22:11] No, I just said that she’s cheating herself. Out of the great transition between Halloween into Thanksgiving, you take down the scary, but you leave up the pumpkins and then you get to that fall. And then.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:25] Pumpkins are your bridge?
Paul Scheer [00:22:26] Yes. You take the witch off the hay bale and you got the hay bale and the pumpkins are having a nice time. You get that turkey out and then because then it’s something to look forward to. Thanksgiving is something to look forward to. And then you got the next thing to look forward to. You don’t eat your dessert first, people.
June Diane Raphael [00:22:48] I know and you guys feel differently and that’s okay. But I’ve I’ve tried to keep an open mind, but what Ginger Holiday does is absolutely unacceptable. And she is.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:02] She’s the kind of person as an influencer, you would believe would be put into jail eventually.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:07] Well, she should be because of the charity she is running.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:10] Yes. It’s a scam. She’s got like that, that Logan Paul drink. She’s pushing.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:18] Prime.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:20] Our kids are obsessed with prime.
Paul Scheer [00:23:23] Obsessed and they have no entry point to Logan Paul They don’t watch Logan.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:27] They’ve just heard about it.

Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:30] That’s so funny.
Paul Scheer [00:23:32] Here’s what I’ll say. And this is a big another big question here. Um. What is wrong with her face? Oh, she just has a burn like a rash over her hairline.

Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:50] It’s so easily covered with nothing but a wire phantom of the Opera Mask. That’s all you need is a filigreed wired phantom of the Opera mask to wear to your wedding. And you’re totally normal.
Paul Scheer [00:24:05] She’s promoting a holiday where Santa hats are the norm. Pop that on and you’re good. When she wears that little Red Riding hood. I don’t. I’m. I’m looking so hard to see it. Well, even at the end, when she’s like, Look at me. I’m like, I’m trying. I’m trying to see it. I don’t see it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:30] Guys, do you think we’re ever going to get to the bad boy of Baltimore?
June Diane Raphael [00:24:34] We will, Jason. I just want to say we absolutely will. I just want to say one thing about her rash, because.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:44] Yes, because it is the inciting incident of the entire movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:24:47] Yeah. And it’s what we’re dealing with the whole time, which is like, is this a major deal because of this.
Paul Scheer [00:24:55] Well, I mean, I think she was already on the verge of losing this deal, because when the agent comes over in the beginning, which by the way, I don’t know much about social media, but I guess the agent doesn’t come over and start taping on his iPhone. He’s like, let’s go right now. We got it. What? You’re taping it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:16] We’re watching a movie that exists in a world in which the cosmetics company Glitzen, not the Donner, not Rudolph, Glitzen. It is the biggest corporation in the entire world. They own these influencers outright. They own them completely and are completely monkeying with their lives as if they are the Illuminati or something.
Paul Scheer [00:25:43] But it also seems like Glitzen is a primarily Christmas themed makeup company because Glitzen and Blitzen. I would imagine. I don’t think you would name your.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:54] I don’t think there are just Christmas cosmetics companies.
Paul Scheer [00:25:57] Well, that’s it. But I think that they. But then why would you wouldn’t name your you wouldn’t go like oh yes we’re going to, now we call ourselves Santa. It’s like Ulta. I get. Santa, I don’t.

He becomes a Christmas lover with her only to then be revealed that he was a Grinch later or whatever. But instead, in the very same scene, he’s like, I don’t remember it. I don’t remember Christmas. June Diane Raphael [00:40:33] And it’s so crazy because I did sympathize with Ginger Holiday because her from her mom’s point of view, her mom’s like, Yeah, we dealt with it in therapy. Like, how many times are we going to go over this? It’s like, Well, lady, you, you didn’t you if you only spent one day with her a year, you were never with her. Yeah. Far as I’m concerned that you weren’t a parent. So I’m sorry if she’s wrestling with this.

June Diane Raphael [00:42:37] Well, but here’s the thing about that surgery. And obviously there’s major problems with our health care system, don’t get me wrong, but I am like Bad boy of Baltimore. What research did you do? Because I do believe that there were services that could have gotten your child. Did you do any research into this?
Paul Scheer [00:42:57] Yeah, I did have an issue with it because it was like he had the choice to let her hear. He just didn’t make the payment. And it was like. It was like I was like a car getting repossessed. And I felt like, I don’t know.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:10] I think would have stepped. I just I just felt like there are and I’m not saying they’re great, but there are some some safety nets there for Noah, and I just didn’t quite buy that he would go deaf.

And when Kensington is asked to be in the family picture at the end, I was very uncomfortable with that. And I was also just like, I think bad things have happened to Kensington in this home and.

June Diane Raphael [00:44:42] Women have been harmed here. And yeah, it’s not it’s not right.
Paul Scheer [00:44:49] I mean, I also want to just like you’re talking about bad things going on. I know it’s a throwaway joke and there are some jokes in this movie. This movie makes a straight up Helen Keller joke, like with no with like no spin. It was like, No, no, that’s a Helen Keller joke. Yeah, Yeah, I know you have a good relationship with your Ipad like Helen Keller has with her iPad, right? Well, I was like, Oh, what? I haven’t heard a Helen Keller joke told sincerely by an adult.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:22] The way this movie takes on disabilities, any like, visible differences is just absolutely horrifying. The way she’s treated by the world and and treats herself for her facial, whatever that is. I was so horrifying to me. And then the way the collectively as a community they shame Derek’s port stain I’m like what’s happening.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:47] Crazy.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:48] And when we’re presented with Noah, who’s a deaf child and signing, I was like, Oh, okay. And then.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:56] She is kind of like, Oh, okay. Oh, that’s interesting.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:00] She just talks to him.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:02] Yeah, she just talked to him and that’s it. And then, and he’s kind of like, Oh my God, that’s great. He’s like, Actually, this is my son. And she’s like, Oh, okay. And then the what’s the little girl’s name? Francesca? Francesca comes over. Little blond girl, healthy blond girl. And she’s like, Oh my God. Ginger flips out over the little blond girl. Like, like being as into her. Like, it seemed to cast the light on everything that was very dark.
Paul Scheer [00:46:28] Well, and then this other moment that I was going to say that struck me as dark, and maybe I’m reading into it. But when the agent tries to trap our our character from the Open marriage movie and our bad boy skater and and they put him in the bathroom, the the the bad girl, she says, why are there no mirrors in here? And then they looked there was like, it is a bathroom and there are no mirrors. What’s going on? And that was the creepiest moment because.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:01] Because you know, that’s a real room in a real house that they were shooting in. And that’s an improvised line.
Paul Scheer [00:47:06] Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:07] That was to say, oh, help, help something. Something’s wrong.
June Diane Raphael [00:47:12] Okay. So I thought that I thought in that moment that that Ginger had taken down all the mirrors in the house like Phantom of the Opera style. Right? She didn’t want to see herself.

Paul Scheer [00:47:28] I get that. But I don’t know. I feel like there’s something weird because she’s also in mirrors and other parts in the house. She’s another she’s in mirrors, on camera she’s fucking making, but she’s making videos and a lot of them. And all she’s doing is covering this part. She may she doesn’t. That’s the other thing. She never stops. She stops for two weeks. It’s not Beauty and the Beast.

My favorite my favorite scene is when they’re doing the video where they’re decorating the tree. And I love these movies because they try and establish the absolute maximum of masculinity is she’s decorating the tree and he’s just chillin with a basketball. He’s not shooting because there’s not a hoop. He’s just putting it up and it falls down.

So the plot of the movie is both of their influencer numbers are going down. And so their agent, who they share, creates a fake PR stunt relationship that they’re going to be in to boost their numbers. They hate each other. They agree to do this. And in the doing of it, they both succeed, fail and fall in love. But it is meant to be a fake relationship such that I was like, Oh, the reveal that he had a child. I was like, Oh great, show me that he has a family. So this is all just a complete fabrication for him that he because I love the reality. He needs the money. He is struggling because he is 62 years old and is still trying to shred at the state skatepark. I don’t think so, my guy.
Paul Scheer [00:50:39] His cameraman was the most upsetting part. His cameraman was clearly like a cameraman past his prime, like he looked like he was just trying to be like, hey, I still got it. No, like he it was really upsetting. I will say this, though. The kid. Noah, Noah, the kid. The kid. It’s weird to me and I feel like it wasn’t really dealt with that he offered up Noah to be like. Like a big brother Big.

And it doesn’t seem to line up.
Paul Scheer [01:04:52] Oh, no. Yet a Christmas tree falling at a slow pace gets him no greater than seven feet tall. Knocks him out and put them in a sling.

Jason Mantzoukas [01:05:06] Well, keep in mind. Okay. And I think this is tough because, yes, he’s knocked unconscious by the tree. He gets amnesia. He jumps off a balcony in superhero lands. The guy is especially strong for someone who’s, like 73 years old. Yeah. And still skateboarding.
June Diane Raphael [01:05:22] My favorite thing about the beginning skateboard sequence, too, with. With the bad boy from the bad boy of Baltimore, Bo, is that we never see him skateboard. We never see him on that thing doing anything.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:05:38] As if the actor himself can’t skateboard, it’s almost as if that could be a problem.
Paul Scheer [01:05:47] Okay. Obviously, there’s a lot a lot to say about a lot. But you know what? There are some people out there that just want to give this movie some love, some people that have a different opinion. It is now time for second opinions.

Paul Scheer [01:08:15] So that is a turnaround, a very quick turnaround. I think the quickest turnaround in the history of film is Star Trek first contact. So that’s true. But so that might have beaten it. Okay. Kate Hickey. Kate Hickey writes “Almost nearly perfect in each and every way. And I do hope it remains so. Five stars.” And a title just right.

Him doing dirty talk with Christmas puns got me feeling some sort of way. Thanking Santa for his shirtless scene. The fact they aren’t milking all these social media moments is mind boggling. Him shirtless in the bed, injured would be great for a post or her getting injured could have been milked for so much sympathy and they could have done a partnership with some sort of organization about allergies and such.”

I was like, This is sickening. And she kisses him. It’s her first kiss is with a grown man in a Christmas onesie.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:11:52] And the like. What has gotten them all horny? Like they’re the metrics that they’re talking about for their engagement on the channels are what’s getting them like worked up like that first thing they’re talking about like influencer metrics and that’s what’s getting them all like hard and wet.

Everyone falling into a pool, another shirtless scene and so much more. This is my favorite Ion Christmas movie Hallmark Hotness. Five stars.”
Jason Mantzoukas [01:12:48] Interesting. So. Oh, So are they suggesting that what makes Ion movies different from Hallmark or perhaps Lifetime, is the amount of like, shirtlessness and, like, objectification that’s going on?
Paul Scheer [01:13:00] I guess. I mean, maybe they’re a little bit more sexy, but it didn’t seem that way.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:13:04] At the wedding, someone says, Can you believe every influencer in the world is at this thing? They cut to the wedding and I’m not kidding. I counted. There are 18 people there.
June Diane Raphael [01:13:21] Not only that.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:13:22] I wish that was every influencer in the world, and we could blow that location up.I will fail.
June Diane Raphael [01:13:32] The aisle that she walks down, is lined with toilet paper. There’s no other way to describe what’s on the ground. I was so deeply upset about the wedding.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:13:44] It felt like a movie that was built on. Here are cameras. Here’s a bunch of random stuff from the trash. Make a movie.
Paul Scheer [01:13:52] I don’t know. June, what do you think?
June Diane Raphael [01:13:54] Oh, gosh. This put me in a bad mood. I was irritable after it. I was angry about this one. I think it’s also because I’ve watched two bad Christmas movies in a row. It’s something to be seen. It is absolutely outrageous, but I don’t think I can recommend it. Okay.
Paul Scheer [01:14:14] I. I like a Christmas movie. There’s no bad Christmas movie to me, even this even this. I can sit back. Yes. Yes.
June Diane Raphael [01:14:24] This isn’t a Christmas movie. This movie does not end on Christmas.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:14:30] This movie is is only about craven commercialism and capitalism. The theme of the movie is making as much money as is humanly possible. When they cut to one year later and it’s them, it’s all about them again, currying favor and wealth amongst their followers. This movie isn’t about the Christmas spirit. I don’t know how it could be if at the end they’re like, not online. You don’t have to applaud for my rants. You didn’t applaud immediately, which means you don’t agree. Minneapolis, entire audience of influencers.
Paul Scheer [01:15:09] I do want to say two things to you. First of all, the original title of this film, Social engagement.
June Diane Raphael [01:15:20] Better title, to be honest. Makes more sense.

And I was trying to take pictures in front of this house. And I saw the UPS guy look at me weird. I saw some guy come out of his house, look at me weird. They were not home. I was going to peek in the back to see if that little area.
June Diane Raphael [01:17:18] I knew you went somewhere, so. So just to set the scene, we were in the hotel room, and I was waiting for an important call from our son, who had lost a devastating soccer game. And he was really, really upset about it. And I said, we have to face time him. And the next thing I knew, Paul, it was the playoffs. He was upset. Playoffs. I said, We have to. I have to talk to him. And then next thing I knew, the facetime was coming and Paul’s gone. I said, Where were you? Where did you go? And he came back and said that he was on a walk. So now I know.
