Paul Scheer [00:00:00] In 2020, Girls Rule: American Pie 9 was released on home video. And in that movie there is more heart, humanity, and normal behavior that is identified as human than in whatever the fuck we just watched. We saw A Beautiful Wedding. So you know what that means.
Music [00:00:28] [Intro Song]
Paul Scheer [00:01:29] Hello people of Earth, and hello people of Los Angeles! We are live at Largo, continuing our exploration into the two worst characters in cinema’s history. I don’t even remember their names. I think it’s Abby and Jake, but if not, it doesn’t make a difference. Him and her will do just fine. Movie came out in 2024. What is it? Well, it’s a sequel to a movie that we did, which I like to call a rom com Fight Club. Now, at the end of that movie, there were these fun slides like the end of The Hangover that apparently were shot at the wrap party for that movie, and that’s the basis of the sequel. The movie starts with those slides and goes, what if? And here’s the kicker, both of these movies based on a book by a really racist writer, so we won’t get into that, we’ll enjoy this because she’s not involved in those movies at all. All you have to know is our two main characters. They fall in love. They get into multiple MMA fights, there’s gambling, there’s mafia, and then they somehow go to Mexico. They’re married. And this all happens in three months. And the girl’s 19. Okay, so that’s. That’s that. I would say that the first act ends at minute 45, and it’s an hour and 25 minute long movie. I won’t talk more about it than that. We’ll get into all of it. But first let me introduce my co-host, Mr. Jason Mantzoukas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:15] What’s up, jerks!? Come on, Largo. Night two. Netflix is a Joke.
Paul Scheer [00:03:23] Netflix is a joke festival. And you know what? Netflix is a joke festival said, can you do movies that are on Netflix? And we said no.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:38] We said we personally would rather pay for these movies. Sometimes multiple times.
Paul Scheer [00:03:47] We want our audience to be frustrated, just like us. We will not make it easy.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:03:54] Correct me if I’m wrong, Paul. We’ve seen this movie before?
Paul Scheer [00:03:59] No, we watched the first.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:00] Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Paul Scheer [00:04:01] A Beautiful Disaster.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:02] Yeah. I kind of remember it. Luckily, this movie has a full blown recap of that movie in the first five minutes.
Paul Scheer [00:04:12] Thank God.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:13] I don’t remember, did that movie had cartoon graphics on the screen?
Paul Scheer [00:04:17] No. That’s new.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:19] That’s new for part two.
Paul Scheer [00:04:21] Part two really pulls out all the stops. It’s Roger rabbit meets, Fritz the Cat, which is an old reference, but I’m going to stand by it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:31] You really are tired.
Paul Scheer [00:04:36] I’m referencing Fritz the cat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:04:37] It’s Roger rabbit as you pick up stuff, like. Just like Roger rabbit. You’re just, you’re just plugging nouns in.
Paul Scheer [00:04:47] Well, you know what? I’m glad that it’s just not us talking about the beautiful animation style of A Beautiful Wedding. No, no, no, we have somebody that is going to weigh in on all things. My other co-host, please welcome June Diane Rapahel.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:11] Thank you so much.
Paul Scheer [00:05:14] Welcome, June.
June Diane Raphael [00:05:15] Hi, Paul. How are you?
Paul Scheer [00:05:16] I’m good. How are you?
June Diane Raphael [00:05:18] Angry. I was so mad. I’m so mad.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:25] You’re so mad because you loved the movie so much?
June Diane Raphael [00:05:28] I know the first thing. One of the first things I wrote down was, have we made any progress as a culture? And it wasn’t even, like progress since the first movie. I mean, like, have we made any progress, you guys? Any?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:45] My question is, are these movies each an announcement of the impending apocalypse? Is how many in this series? This is two. How many are there?
Paul Scheer [00:05:56] Well, this just came out.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:05:57] Oh. So. Okay. Is it books?
Paul Scheer [00:06:01] Well.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:02] You did say there was a book.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:05] You said book.
Paul Scheer [00:06:06] Yes, I and I’m not lying.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:08] Is a beautiful baby coming?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:09] Is it you? Is it your book?
Paul Scheer [00:06:12] It’s not my book.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:13] Is it your book?
Paul Scheer [00:06:14] It is not based on my book.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:16] Do you write these?
Paul Scheer [00:06:16] This I did not. This is.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:19] Next one’s called Beautiful Podcast.
Paul Scheer [00:06:23] Here’s what I’ll tell you about this. And just to kind of put it in simple specifics, the way that Twilight spun off 50 Shades of Gray, there is another series of YA novels that are very successful. This is kind of the dirty alt version of them.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:41] The books aren’t dirty you mean?
Paul Scheer [00:06:42] The books are dirty.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:43] They are.
Paul Scheer [00:06:43] Yes. So this is like, this is the fan. What’s the books it’s based on?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:48] Does somebody know that? One of the nerds here will know.
June Diane Raphael [00:06:51] Love that this audience doesn’t know. I feel so safe.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:54] Did we accidentally get a cool audience?
June Diane Raphael [00:06:55] I’m so happy. I’m so happy.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:06:57] Oh, no. This is going to be a bad show. No nerd? Okay. Yes. Thank you, nerd, please.
Paul Scheer [00:07:04] All right, so explain it to me.
Audience Member [00:07:06] So I only know this because I just listened to the beautiful disaster episode.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:07:12] Much like everybody else to prep for this. Everybody watched.
Paul Scheer [00:07:15] So I did go over some of these details in that one.
Audience Member [00:07:18] You did. And what it actually is is that Dylan Sprouse is in another series of YA movies called The After series.
Paul Scheer [00:07:26] Yes. And this is a parody of the after series.
Audience Member [00:07:29] Those are based on Harry styles fanfiction.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:07:33] Oh, wait, that’s then. Is that the new that’s the new Anne Hathaway movie?
Audience Member [00:07:39] No.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:07:40] That’s that’s a different Harry styles fanfiction? That has spawned a successful film franchise? I have an answer for you now, June, we have not moved forward as a culture and in fact, we are moving backwards. Put us in a grave. It’s over. I listened to the trees from The Happening and will be killing myself tonight. Goodbye.
Paul Scheer [00:08:06] Just for brevity sake, the idea is that.
June Diane Raphael [00:08:10] First of all, the fact that there’s any source material here is so absurd.
Paul Scheer [00:08:15] I’ve been sitting on what I really want to say, which is this is based on a novella.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:19] So that’s what this is. So this is based on a short book?
Paul Scheer [00:08:24] Yes. The first movie based on a full book. This is based on a novella. And then, this novella, they really just didn’t use at all.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:34] So the third movie will be based on, like, a magazine article. And the fourth movie based on a tweet.
Paul Scheer [00:08:42] Now, now I will say this a couple more details that are equally confounding about this. So, they did put the author of the novellas name in the credits. She says, I am not involved in this, and she has tried to get her name out of the credits.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:08:59] What?
Paul Scheer [00:09:00] Unsuccessfully. So, they have said we’ve done this with the author’s input. She says no. So it’s apparently a 24 page novella.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:15] Oh, wait a minute, 24 page is not a novella. It’s a short story. I’m so sorry. What I can write that I can write the next one of these by the Monday.
June Diane Raphael [00:09:31] It’s a chapter.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:32] No, we got the. The three of us have to write the next movie. I don’t want them to hear. I don’t want them to steal the movie. We can do it.
Paul Scheer [00:09:43] They wrote another. Well, the author did continue to write this series but spun it off. The spinoff series is about Travis’s brothers, so.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:09:55] I was so flummoxed when those guys showed up. I was like, who the fuck are these idiots? Like who who shook loose a bag of potatoes into this movie?
June Diane Raphael [00:10:08] I couldn’t pick one out from the other.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:10:11] Couldn’t make heads or tails out of them. One of them keeps looking into camera. I’m like, has this motherfucker never been on the set before?
Paul Scheer [00:10:20] Wait a second. Are you telling me that the scene, the hottest scene in cinema since Top Gun’s volleyball scene, the shirtless spike ball scene?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:10:31] Please play it.
Paul Scheer [00:10:32] I wish I had.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:10:34] That scene. I only wish they had put Playing with the Boys in the soundtrack, because
Paul Scheer [00:10:39] They can’t afford that.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:10:41] They did the high fives. They did all the tropes of that, of Top Gun.
Paul Scheer [00:10:45] And here, here’s the thing. I’m not here to yuck anyone’s yum. I’m not here to make fun of anyone’s looks, but those guys are decidedly good looking. They’re not jaw dropping. Like the beach stops at these dudes and their tight packages. Like, I don’t know what’s going on.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:05] Well, you know, they’re all Maddox’s, so they’ve all got that big hog. They’re all packing that mad dicks.
Paul Scheer [00:11:13] The way that they the way that they show one of those brother’s dick bulge I was like, it doesn’t look sexy to me. It looks like something’s wrong. Looks like there is.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:25] I wrote down at one point, I was say, I hate women, I hate men. Sex is gross. I hate it all.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:34] Yeah, I hate that I wrote that, too. And then I said, the only thing I’m attracted to is the cartoon characters.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:41] Oh my gosh.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:42] The cartoons are gross. The narrator’s voice was gross.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:11:46] Who was the narrator? Real question.
June Diane Raphael [00:11:48] I think the narrator, I think was the, like concierge. I think it was Sancho.
Paul Scheer [00:11:55] I thought the narrator was the priest that was in training.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:00] No, that’s not Miguel.
Paul Scheer [00:12:02] No, no, the priest training the priest in training.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:04] Oh, I see.
Paul Scheer [00:12:05] Like so he’s like Miguel’s like father. I know I’ve been training to be a priest, but holy shit, let me tell you this story. And then the priest is like, you’ll never guess what my priest in training told me. And then he’s telling the Pope.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:19] You’re telling me the Pope is a character in this movie?
Paul Scheer [00:12:22] This movie is a story that we tell the Pope. Oh, because he’s like, it’s so crazy, Pope.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:28] Next movie, Beautiful Vatican.
Paul Scheer [00:12:30] Well, then they send Russell Crowe from the Pope’s Exorcist to then to then dispose of Travis and Abby.
June Diane Raphael [00:12:40] All of this backstory and these crossovers and whatever’s happening with these characters, like none of it amounts to anything like this. This doesn’t deserve any backstory or other movies.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:12:53] What about when Abby says to Miguel, what’s your backstory?
Paul Scheer [00:12:56] When she said that, I threw my pencil across the room. I had to pick it up. But I still was just. I wanted the anger of that moment. But what’s your backstory?
June Diane Raphael [00:13:09] But his answer is devastating and insane.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:13:13] Make no mistake, the most interesting character in the movie, Miguel.
June Diane Raphael [00:13:17] For sure. And at one point I was like, if if we cut to this house one morning and there’s like 15 dead bodies and they’ve been slaughtered like it’s Miguel because he grew up there, he witnessed violence like something’s going to turn and he’s going to become so disgusted with the behavior that’s going on in his childhood home. And the disrespect. Yeah, that Miguel is going to flip out. And I wish I saw that movie.
Paul Scheer [00:13:44] Let’s go from the top. Obviously, this movie starts off in the montage, the slideshow montage that we see at the end of the first film where these characters are having a crazy night in Vegas. We start off the movie right where it left off. Only three days, I think pass.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:03] Six days.
Paul Scheer [00:14:04] Okay, so yeah, it’s very close. But enough time for them to make an Apple slideshow of all the photos from last night.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:13] Oh, sorry. That you mean in Vegas?
Paul Scheer [00:14:16] Oh, yeah. In Vegas.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:16] Oh, in Vegas. I mean, nothing has happened like no time since that is the last movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:14:22] Well, yes, but we pick up, we pick up there in the beginning of this movie. So just to talk about that slideshow for a second. So they had to, in their drunken stupor, make a slideshow. Do you think they’re just gonna.
Paul Scheer [00:14:34] “Wait wait wait. Hold on. Let me pull up. Yeah, that’s a good transition.”
June Diane Raphael [00:14:37] Do you think they’re just airplaying it to the TV? Like someone had to figure out settings.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:42] Oh, yeah. What wi-Fi Wi-Fi network.
Paul Scheer [00:14:45] Someone’s in iPhoto. Like I said.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:14:47] They had to do the thing where they’re like, oh, the code. You have to get the code.
Paul Scheer [00:14:53] Google Chromecast? How can I do my slideshow?
June Diane Raphael [00:14:57] Most hotels won’t let you do it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:00] And thank God all the pictures just happened to be from the night before.
Paul Scheer [00:15:05] And in chronological order. And then we get the craziest reveal, which is Abby has been straight up branded like a Nexium victim, with her her new husband’s name in her inner like area right there.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:25] Inner area?
June Diane Raphael [00:15:27] Yeah, the inner area.
Paul Scheer [00:15:28] Her cum gutters.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:15:29] I like that way to put it less. I think that makes it grosser. Her inner area? It’s not insid her labia. It’s on her hipbone.
Paul Scheer [00:15:42] I know that they call it cum gutters on men. I didn’t know what they call it for women. So here.
June Diane Raphael [00:15:50] Oh my God.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:04] So I think they’re called cum gutters on men, but I think it’s just squirt drainage on women.
Paul Scheer [00:16:11] So she’s branded. She’s married. They also conveniently give them, like a $189,000. Like. What a great plot device. Oh, and you got a shitload of money, too.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:24] And they stole the money from the last movie. I do remember that. But then I had forgotten entirely that she is a child gambling prodigy.
Paul Scheer [00:16:36] Yep.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:37] And that’s why. And he’s a fight.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:39] He is a fight clubber.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:41] He. And that’s why, in some ways.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:44] I wish he was Tyler Durden. I wish he was imaginary.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:47] Listen, in some ways, though, this movie made so much more sense to me than the last one. I was like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:54] Wow, I feel the opposite.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:55] Really.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:16:57] What was the plot of this? The last one, I get it.
June Diane Raphael [00:16:59] No, you don’t get it. No no, no, you think you got it. But when if you remember back to the time when we watched it, we had to find out that she was like a child prodigy. We found that out 50 minutes into the movie. I think it was insane. And her father, there was no record of her dad. And then he was caught. It was absolutely bananas.
Paul Scheer [00:17:19] She is very like, demure in the first movie and then opens up in this movie. She’s full on insane, like she’s fighting children.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:30] I love that scene.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:31] Oh, my God, that. Oh, the whole sequence with Thumbelina.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:38] I thought it was great. Perfect. I was like, this.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:41] Insanity.
June Diane Raphael [00:17:42] Wonderful.
Paul Scheer [00:17:43] She’s like, I will fight this child because I won’t hurt her as bad as another person might.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:17:50] Her thinking is, who would hurt. Somebody is going to hurt this little girl. I’ll go in there, but I just need a costume. Cut to sexy cat costume.
Paul Scheer [00:17:58] By the way, I do want to just talk about the worst costume in the entire movie. Which is, again, back to the opening scene.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:06] Oh.
Paul Scheer [00:18:07] She. Within the first two minutes, Abby pukes on Travis, vomits on him. He does not change out of that shirt or that outfit. No, I would say it seems for hours.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:22] Because Paul, he’s wearing that. So I was tracking there that same exact thing, and she wakes up in a thick black tee and it’s thick and it’s cheap.
Paul Scheer [00:18:33] And I got big and it’s.
June Diane Raphael [00:18:37] Yes. And she’s wearing that. She’s wearing that all the way to when she’s on the bed with him. And he’s wearing the same clothes in Mexico. They are so disgusting. Yeah. They’re so disgusting. Take a shower.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:18:53] They’re 19, who cares?
Paul Scheer [00:18:54] There. There’s also. I’ve never, ever seen a movie with such an egregious edit in my life where it’s like, oh, they think they’re being killed. The I guess we don’t know, beat the shit out of a bellhop. Like, fully.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:14] They waterboard him, they waterboard him.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:17] They murder that man.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:19] I think so.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:19] But of course every hotel in Vegas has a giant pitcher of water. Just an open pitcher of water.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:32] Wait what? What I couldn’t understand is what was. I know they thought it was a gun, but what was he bringing in?
Paul Scheer [00:19:39] Dryer. Like a hair dryer.
June Diane Raphael [00:19:41] Where was the cord?
June Diane Raphael [00:19:44] It was a cordless hairdryer? I didn’t know we had the technology. I was like, what is that thing?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:19:50] Well, it’s future tech. This takes place in the future.
Paul Scheer [00:19:53] What movie? What also what kind of character also enters by putting a hair dryer through. That’s how I’m entering. The hair dryer. But here’s the thing. That guy comes in, they think it’s a gun. They cover him up, they beat the living fuck out of him, and then they don’t reveal it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:14] Nope.
Paul Scheer [00:20:15] They don’t show you any of the funniness of, oh, I’m so sorry. Oh, God.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:18] You never get to see that he’s okay.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:20] No, he’s not.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:21] They’re just like, here we are at the helicopter.
Paul Scheer [00:20:24] What? What? When they go to the helicopter, I rewound it. What did I miss? Did I have a stroke?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:29] Not even like a nice helicopter. Like, do you want to fly in a helicopter from the scene? Like. Like a helicopter from the scenes in Magnum PI where he’s flashing back to Vietnam.
Paul Scheer [00:20:38] But I’m also like, at one point they go, Michael can’t come with us. I’m like, who the fuck is Michael? I didn’t even know there was a Michael here.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:45] And then also, how do you not bring, what was his name? Buzz?
Paul Scheer [00:20:50] Buzz. Yes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:51] How do you not bring buzz back? One of the most charismatic people in the movie.
June Diane Raphael [00:20:54] I don’t remember Buzz. Buzz is in the other movie?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:20:56] Pilot of the helicopter.
Paul Scheer [00:20:57] For 10K he’ll take you anywhere. He’ll take you to Mexico without your passport. Cool.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:02] Okay. He was amazing. He was amazing. And Kyle Richards was as well.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:08] What? I was flummoxed by her arrival. Only because I was. I was wondering, is she playing herself.
June Diane Raphael [00:21:18] Well, here’s what’s so interesting. I want to know when this movie came out, because for those who are know.
Paul Scheer [00:21:23] 2024
June Diane Raphael [00:21:25] I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it.
Paul Scheer [00:21:25] Only a few months old. January 2024.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:29] But is it currently 2027?
June Diane Raphael [00:21:32] Just is not. The numbers aren’t lining up. But but it was so wild to watch her deliver some of those monologues about marriage, knowing what we know now, of course, about her.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:21:42] What do we know now?
June Diane Raphael [00:21:44] So Kyle has has had this long relationship with a man named Mauricio who who, by the way, sells a lot of real estate in Mexico. So I did have the thought, like, maybe she was just there and they hired her like a local hire. But they’ve had this marriage, like, they’ve just really presented themselves as, like, absolutely in love for years. For like 30 years. Okay. And the marriage has fallen apart this year.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:14] Got it.
June Diane Raphael [00:22:15] And it’s.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:16] So is that why? Is she. Because I feel like, is she being down on guys in this movie? Or is she being like?
June Diane Raphael [00:22:23] Well, that’s interesting too, because she has a joke about them being lesbians. And she did have a very sort of will they won’t they sort of a lot of lesbian rumors about her and this singer, Morgan, what’s her name? Morgan Wade.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:22:42] You guys know that. But you don’t know anything else? Okay.
June Diane Raphael [00:22:46] That piece of it was so crazy. It was a it was a wild scene to watch because it just felt like we were watching Kyle talk about Mauricio and Morgan.
Paul Scheer [00:22:57] And then. But then little did we know that she plays a very pivotal role because it’s the mother of the guy that Abby was supposed to be with.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:08] What are the odds?
June Diane Raphael [00:23:10] Did you mind that he had a British accent and she didn’t?
Paul Scheer [00:23:16] Honestly, I didn’t hear a goddamn word.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:20] I thought Parker had a British accent in this movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:21] Parker doesn’t have a British accent. I don’t think so. Does he?
June Diane Raphael [00:23:24] He does.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:25] He does? Oh, maybe. Is he trying to cover it up? Maybe. And it’s coming through.
June Diane Raphael [00:23:28] I don’t know, I don’t.
Paul Scheer [00:23:29] Okay, all I know is I. His dog bark sounded American.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:23:33] And also I had this the entire scene of her. This this scene I couldn’t make heads or tails of because she’s asleep, still dressed as the cat wrestling costume. She.
Paul Scheer [00:23:50] She puts that back on now. She’s. This is after she wrestled. She’s out of that costume. She pisses on herself. Well she just pours tequila and goes am I peeing on myself. And then she then goes in to cheat on her.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:03] No she goes in just to get a selfie.
June Diane Raphael [00:24:05] Just to get a selfie, Paul.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:06] Just to make him. Yeah, just to make Travis jealous.
Paul Scheer [00:24:09] But she puts that on.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:09] She does, but then falls asleep. She. But the amount of noise that she. This Parker is such a deep sleeper.
June Diane Raphael [00:24:17] What is he taking?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:19] Screaming at full volume. It is so loud. Everything she’s doing. And he’s just like, in a way that he’s like. I don’t think so.
June Diane Raphael [00:24:26] No, it was unsettling. Like something there’s a medical event happening and he’s not waking up to it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:32] She is making cat sounds.
June Diane Raphael [00:24:34] I couldn’t tell you why.
Paul Scheer [00:24:35] Yeah. I mean, this is.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:37] That seems like an actor’s choice. This is the callback.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:42] Oh, it is?
Paul Scheer [00:24:42] Yes. Because she made first.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:45] Cat sounds?
Paul Scheer [00:24:45] Yes. The first movie when she gives him a hand job.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:47] I remember the hand job.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:48] She goes, oh, nice kitty, nice kitty. And she grabs the kitty’s tail. So this is the heightening.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:24:55] But this time she’s the kitty? And he is the dog, right?
Paul Scheer [00:25:00] Right. Which is which is a new form of sex play. I learned that.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:04] But she’s not a kitten, though, like that’s what. The thing is when she was giving him a hand job, she thought she was touching a cat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:10] Now let’s be clear.
Paul Scheer [00:25:11] No, she is the cat and the dog.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:15] I know she’s the cat.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:15] Let me be clear. She has broken into his room while he is asleep and then sexually assaulted him.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:23] That’s what I don’t understand, though, is so. But still, like, I cannot understand why she’s making cat noises.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:29] I don’t either.
Paul Scheer [00:25:30] Because she’s deadly asleep thinking she’s a cat. She dreams about. Yes!
June Diane Raphael [00:25:36] How do you know that?
Paul Scheer [00:25:39] I read the novella.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:25:40] So then. So then why does he think he’s a dog?
Paul Scheer [00:25:45] Because he’s dreaming about being a dog. Guys, you’re so fucking dense. This movies is all here.
June Diane Raphael [00:25:50] By the way, these are. You’re saying this like, you know, you’ve had dreams of flying or dreams where you have to perform.
Paul Scheer [00:25:58] And I’m a dog. Ruff Ruff. I’m a dog.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:00] But he only starts making dog sounds, I think, after she starts jerking him off. As if that’s what happens when dogs get jerked off like. What I will say about both of these movies, the plot and the story and the choices are inscrutable. I don’t I don’t understand why they’re making these.
Paul Scheer [00:26:19] This is a movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:20] Thank God they are. Because if they weren’t, if this was a flat telling of the same basic story points, boy, would it be just awful.
Paul Scheer [00:26:28] Oh, I mean, the fact that at 45 minutes into the film, he goes, maybe we should take a break from each other. They’ve only been together.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:38] Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:26:38] They’ve only been together for about 72 hours as a married couple. I think we just need some time to figure each other out, like find ourselves.
June Diane Raphael [00:26:47] This movie was the longest movie I’ve ever seen.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:50] Same.
June Diane Raphael [00:26:50] Why was it so long? Every time I looked and stopped to catch my breath and just, like, reorient myself in the real world.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:26:58] Somehow there was 45 minutes left every time.
June Diane Raphael [00:26:59] There was always, always 45 minutes left. And I was so shocked.
Paul Scheer [00:27:04] But so much was happening. Literally so much is happening, so much so that you’re like, wait, what? All right, I have this friend who freed a rooster, the rooster that he freed.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:14] Okay, now Paul. Do not gloss over this. Because the only love story I care about in the movie is Shep and the rooster’s. Shep. Shep is easily the most interesting character in the story. When Shep is trapped in the closet by the rooster and his mother calls from hospice and his grandmother dies on the phone with him.
Paul Scheer [00:27:41] No, no, no, no.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:42] I mean on the floor outside. He doesn’t get to talk to her.
Paul Scheer [00:27:45] No, it’s even worse because what they say is the mom says, hey, whatever.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:27:51] Hey Shep. I’m in hospice with grandma.
Paul Scheer [00:27:53] We’re going to pull the plug. And then grandma goes, hi, Shep, I want to. Beeeeeeeeep. Like they wouldn’t even let her finish a sentence. We’ve just watched matricide.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:08] It’s so crazy. I loved that part. Shep is the best. I don’t know what’s going on in Shep’s mind at all.
June Diane Raphael [00:28:18] Yeah, Shep is in the middle of, like, a nervous breakdown. I laughed when he wakes up the next morning and the roosters have drawn. Etched out pictures of him. I was laughing so hard.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:32] Do you have the picture of all the different drawings and sentences?
Paul Scheer [00:28:36] I wish.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:28:37] The roosters have trashed his room and graffitied all over the walls. And in English and a picture of him. What? That’s in this movie.
Paul Scheer [00:28:50] But am I wrong in remembering it like that Shep freed the rooster. So why do they hate Shep, then?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:00] Well, they’re fighters.
June Diane Raphael [00:29:01] They’re fight. Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:03] They’re cockfighting roosters. He lets them all free in the room, like, oh, we’re all going to hang out now. But they’re trained to kill each other, so they begin to slaughter each other.
Paul Scheer [00:29:12] I thought, okay. I thought.
June Diane Raphael [00:29:14] What you think?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:15] Yeah. What did you think?
June Diane Raphael [00:29:16] What happened in there?
Paul Scheer [00:29:17] I thought they were just mad at Shep.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:19] Oh, I mean.
Paul Scheer [00:29:22] Because of the writing on the wall. It seemed personal. It wasn’t like a guy who was like, oh, shit. I let these dogs run loose. It was like these. These motherfuckers weren’t. Now you’re going down an asshole like we have. If they felt like they had a vendetta for him.
June Diane Raphael [00:29:37] Well, I think that’s also true.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:29:41] Oh, I don’t think. I don’t think these cocks respect life at all. They are going for it.
June Diane Raphael [00:29:46] You’re right though, like, this isn’t a bit like the most compelling story was him wrestling with whether or not he was a carnivore, like whether or not. And then and then actually confronting like, animals who were trying to kill like it was compelling.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:02] Yeah. Oh, especially when that when you realize that is the the second beat of him admitting to being a hunter, and that’s upsetting his girlfriend so much, and now he decides to care for animals he has. Get ready for it. An arc?
June Diane Raphael [00:30:20] He does.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:21] Shep. That the only person who has an arc in this movie?
June Diane Raphael [00:30:27] Like Travis. And what was her name? Abby. Abby like.
Paul Scheer [00:30:31] Him and her.
June Diane Raphael [00:30:32] They start in one place and they seem to end in the exact same place.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:36] They they they they times zero each other and they go right back to zero.
Paul Scheer [00:30:40] Do they have chemistry?
June Diane Raphael [00:30:43] Oh, that’s a great question.
Paul Scheer [00:30:44] Like, is it fun to watch them fight or is it just like, ugh?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:30:49] It’s neither fun to watch them fight nor fun to watch them kiss. No, I’m also not like turned on by their sex scenes.
Paul Scheer [00:30:57] I was more turned on by the kitten and the dog sex scene than when he’s like, I’m Oog.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:05] You’re team Parker?
Paul Scheer [00:31:06] In this scenario.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:09] I wanted Abby to fuck Miguel the priest and be like.
Paul Scheer [00:31:12] Oh yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:12] Listen. Listen, Miguel. You tought me how to juggle? You’re about to become a priest. Let’s go.
June Diane Raphael [00:31:20] What I couldn’t understand is the scene where they decide to take a break with their bachelor parties and bachelorette parties. She says to him, he says, like, I’ve really been a dick. And she’s like, no, you haven’t. You haven’t. And he’s like, no, I have. And she’s like, yeah. And multiple times in the movie, because the same thing happens with Mare and Shep where he is like, I’ve been really acting like an asshole. She’s like, no, no, no, no, no, no. And he’s like, no. Yes, I have like. The women will not accept the bad behavior and toxicity of these men, and it’s so disturbing.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:31:59] I’m just going to go out on a limb here and say Abby is questionable in some of her behavior.
June Diane Raphael [00:32:04] Why you say that?
Paul Scheer [00:32:07] When she. When she’s like, I need the fuck, you just put it in an inch and then she lock them in there till like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:32:16] Oh. Let’s be clear. Travis and Abby are both toxic and insane. Yeah. Full stop.
June Diane Raphael [00:32:22] Yes, but.
Paul Scheer [00:32:23] I just want to acknowledge that.
June Diane Raphael [00:32:25] Okay, fine. But his behavior around the topless beach, around her taking her shirt, like all of that was absolutely insane.
Paul Scheer [00:32:35] That was a little overboard.
June Diane Raphael [00:32:37] I’ll say. And you’re right, though they are both like terrible people. I don’t even know if they’re terrible. I don’t know what the. It’s literally like watching someone play with two Barbie dolls and just like smashing them together, like. Like it’s.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:32:53] It feels like they are each triggering the other person constantly as if that is chemistry.
Paul Scheer [00:33:00] You know, what it feels like to me is if this movie was made and then, it’s like drunk history. They get somebody really drunk, like, explain the movie to me. And this movie feels like a drunk history reenactment of someone telling you about a rom com that they saw. And then and then like, there’s cartoons and punching them. He’s like boobies! And then the guy is fighting a chicken because he killed the chicken. But then those roosters, and then they’re like, fuck you! And they write on the wall. And then another guy is like, my boyfriend. Like I’m getting a painting, and then he gets knocked the mud. Then they’re in the mud, and then the priest is there and he’s juggling and he’s like, wait, what?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:41] Or it’s either I agree, it could be that or it’s written by like two 12 year olds, it’s written by two 12 year olds. We’re like, I think this is what sex is like. I think this is what it is to be in love.
Paul Scheer [00:33:54] I do like that they like safe sex. I mean, they they.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:33:58] Well, you know what was smart? I will give the movie this. It was very smart to set the movie in Mexico, where we all know you cannot get condoms. You can’t get them. Illegal in Mexico. Impossible. Even if you get a hook up like Sancho. Who’s with them 24/7. Can’t ask my guy for some condoms?
June Diane Raphael [00:34:18] But here’s the thing. Why was he looking? I did find it very strange that they just just settled into this Airbnb, and he immediately looks in the bedside drawer for condoms. Do they come with every AirBnb?
Paul Scheer [00:34:31] Bibles and condoms.
June Diane Raphael [00:34:32] And if they are there, don’t use those.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:34:35] Then he goes, then he leaves. Yeah. This is a PSA for everybody. Don’t use found condoms. Oh don’t just don’t do it. He then leaves his room to go ask Shep if Shep has condoms. And Shep appears to be wearing, like, very offensive. Like he’s dressing like very offensive mexican, stereotypical Mexican gear.
Paul Scheer [00:35:01] Big mustache and a bandolier like El Guapo from Three Amigos.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:06] Like, I was like, he’s got this, but no condoms? They’re wearing the same clothes that they got puked on him. But this guy’s got a full on, like, sexy dress up, offensive sexy dress up.
Paul Scheer [00:35:18] But weren’t they fucking in the helicopter?
June Diane Raphael [00:35:21] Oh, yes they were. Maybe that’s where all of them went. Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:35:26] And then how big is that helicopter bathroom? How big is that helicopter that they can go into a private room in the helicopter?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:33] I can’t imagine there’s a bathroom in any helicopter.
June Diane Raphael [00:35:36] I don’t think there’s bathrooms.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:35:37] Maybe a hole in the ground.
Paul Scheer [00:35:39] Like the hole that they pour the water in for that poor bellhop.
June Diane Raphael [00:35:45] Here’s my question about the brothers. The Maddox?
Paul Scheer [00:35:48] Maddox brothers.
June Diane Raphael [00:35:49] The Maddox brothers. So the wedding, half the wedding happens. They’re married. And then after they present her with a ring. Why not give it to her before?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:01] Great, great question.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:03] Why not give it to your brother to give her and have that moment before?
Paul Scheer [00:36:07] Because you don’t want to mess up the wedding day with the ring. You do that afterwards in private.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:11] Also. Why not? If you’re the brothers, why not give the ring to Travis to give to her?
June Diane Raphael [00:36:16] Give it to her. It wasn’t very strange.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:18] Do they do it away from Travis? As if they’re protecting him from, like, talking about their dead mother in front of him.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:25] Listen, the movie ended, and I was like, oh, she’s married to the brothers. Got it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:31] By the way, she’ll be better off.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:33] Absolutely.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:34] I also found it interesting where, like, we need to take a break. Why don’t you bring your friends in for a bachelor party and I’ll do nothing. Like she is.
Paul Scheer [00:36:44] I think she doesn’t have friends except for Mare.
Paul Scheer [00:36:46] Oh, right. Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:47] Remember? Cause she’s.
Paul Scheer [00:36:48] Right. Yeah.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:48] She doesn’t have a crew.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:36:50] On the run with her dad.
June Diane Raphael [00:36:50] But I was obsessed with watching that. And I don’t know where Kyle Richards found the. I would love to see a whole other movie about Kyle Richards in that resort, because she pulls those women together like ladies in waiting. Who are those women?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:05] Oh, yeah. What was that? Is she some sort of, like, guru or something?
June Diane Raphael [00:37:08] I have no idea. Seemed like she had just paid for these.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:13] She seems to be teaching like a workshop in the power of the pussy. That’s what she’s telling them about when she then sexually assaults the waiter.
Paul Scheer [00:37:21] I’m going to tell you. I’m going to tell you two things that are going to maybe help this. The movie had to be written in less than four weeks. And, and, and they also, according to the actors, improvised a majority of it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:37:38] I’m not surprised by that at all. And multiple times wrote there’s no way that was a line. People are saying stuff just to say stuff.
Paul Scheer [00:37:46] Yeah, they had one month to write and cast the movie. So that is it to get down to the DR to shoot this, on the sets that Roadhouse wasn’t using when they were shooting their movie.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:00] Oh, wow.
Paul Scheer [00:38:01] So they were really fighting for sets, too. So there we go.
June Diane Raphael [00:38:07] Now, I, I, I would love to talk for, I guess the rest of the time we have here about the blooper scene.
Paul Scheer [00:38:14] Oh, the the blooper scene.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:18] Blooper single.
June Diane Raphael [00:38:21] I’ve never seen one blooper.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:24] Never seen it.
June Diane Raphael [00:38:26] One blooper.
Paul Scheer [00:38:27] There is nothing else.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:38:28] It was celebrating to like two long. Bloopers are meant to be enjoyed by you at home being like, oh, they’re cracking each other up or they’re whatever, they’re having a good time. Not this wasn’t that at all.
Paul Scheer [00:38:41] He yells. He yells at director. Roger, stop laughing.
June Diane Raphael [00:38:49] I thought what he was saying. I don’t know if I want to watch it again to find out. Actually, I thought what he was saying was, Roger, like, when are you going to cut? Like you’ve had us scream.
Paul Scheer [00:39:01] I thought it was like, I can’t do this acting with you laughing over there. He’s like, what do you think you’re at a Netflix is a joke show over here?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:11] Oh!
Paul Scheer [00:39:12] Acting.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:14] What do you think this is Hulu is hilarious? Hashtag Hulu is hilarious.
Paul Scheer [00:39:21] By the way. Hulu needs to start a festival on the same week.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:39:26] Its just called Hulu is hilarious.
Paul Scheer [00:39:30] The cast of The Bear doing variety show skits. You’ll see everyone on Shogun do a tight five. wait, but, but that also, again, that scene to me, of them, like, laughing about the game. And that one single blooper also reminded me of.
June Diane Raphael [00:39:52] One single blooper.
Paul Scheer [00:39:53] Reminded me of my favorite scene in the movie, which is when she’s juggling with the priest. He comes out and fucking eats grapes like knuckles from Sonic. Like eating them whole.
June Diane Raphael [00:40:08] I thought that was a funny choice.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:10] Funny choice. Then he drops the towel. Just so he can intimidate Miguel with his big dick. He doesn’t yet know that Miguel is a priest in training.
Paul Scheer [00:40:18] Can I tell you how?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:19] A P.I.T.
June Diane Raphael [00:40:19] P.I.T.
Paul Scheer [00:40:20] By the way, can I tell you I would like to have shot that scene? I thought of this, and I was like, well, I’ll never make it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:27] P.I.T. Priest in training.
Paul Scheer [00:40:30] Don’t overthink this too much. But the way I would have shot that scene is when he dropped his towel. It should have looked like an eclipse covered the sun. His dick is so big, it covers all natural light.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:40:45] I would have loved it if we knew Miguel was training to become a priest. But when he saw Travis’s dick, he renounced to God. I would love. I would love it. I would love nothing more than if I could make all of my roles, force them to make me have a big dick in all of them, just by people talking about it. They dedicate five minutes of the movie to Shep. I am sorry to keep going back to Shep in the chickens and the cocks rather, but the guy who is carrying the dead, the dead cock covered, who says my son, my son. Hahaha. And he’s so upset. And Shep is just like. And then there’s such a funny scene when everybody’s watching and the cockfight lasts one second off camera, and then Shep is clearly affected by it. And then we go on and they the guy everybody’s betting on the Maddox brothers eating hot peppers or something like that. Yeah, but they cut the Shep outside in the world, and the guy comes back again like, no. And he walks back in again. It’s the same scene plays up, but Shep is like, so moved by it. They spend so much time Shep alone with the cocks. What?
June Diane Raphael [00:42:07] I couldn’t understand shit. Mare was very upset when Shep fell out of the roof.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:15] Made me laugh.
June Diane Raphael [00:42:16] I laughed too.But she was so upset.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:20] Like hey. What’s up?
June Diane Raphael [00:42:22] But she was so upset. I just, I actually just need an explanation. Then he was saying he was sort of covering for spying on her, and then was saying there was an earthquake there. What was happening? Was he covering for the falling out of the?
Paul Scheer [00:42:36] It seems like no one had like headset mics on, like or no one like. It seemed like nobody in Video Village was able to hear the dialog and it just looked like, yeah, that looked like a scene happened. Great. Move on. And then I think that was like.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:42:49] I guess I feel like all they had was the idea that he’s spying on them. Maybe he’s jealous, he’s insecure, whatever. He falls down into thing. And then I feel like the rest of it, they were like, just, just go, just riff, you guys. Just just try and be, like, embarrassed and cover and all the earthquake stuff. All that stuff felt like riffing to me, but not good riffing.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:10] I couldn’t make heads or tails.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:11] But I think that’s why it didn’t make sense.
June Diane Raphael [00:43:13] Sure. Remember when they’re playing twister?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:15] Holy shit, with Sancho? And how much how many disgusting shots of feet there were?
June Diane Raphael [00:43:23] Oh so gross.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:25] And when Shep farted in Travis’s face, I was like, what the fuck is going on? Don’t show me farting in faces and don’t show me all these gross feet, please. This is not a Tarantino movie. You’re not making up for this with brilliant filmmaking. This is too much foot content.
Paul Scheer [00:43:42] And then they they sing like, this very weird Italian song.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:43:47] They sing it in a karaoke machine while the power is dot dot dot, out. What? No. You made a whole point to be like, it’s raining, the power is out. So they’ve got to play games. Except they’ve got a functioning karaoke machine. What?
Paul Scheer [00:44:06] I also, I don’t know, I don’t know what. What’s happening?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:44:12] The movie is so unstable. You know what I mean? It’s it’s so unstable. And it’s like. It’s like it doesn’t have. It’s like baking something without an egg. Without an egg. There’s no binder. There’s no binder for the cake, and it’s just coming apart in your hands, and you’re like, what? What is this?
Paul Scheer [00:44:31] And and then if we’re going to even go there, the two women that try to seduce. Travis. Travis. Right. Okay. Sure. They take his phone and instead of doing credit card transactions, anything, they just want to look through his photos. Like, all they’re doing is. It’s like, ew gross, gross. Like, their job is to rob men and just critique their iPhoto.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:00] I will be up at night thinking about the women who went topless for this movie. I will never forget them. And I honor them. So many.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:09] So many.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:09] So many.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:11] So many boobs and tits.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:12] For this. With this.
Paul Scheer [00:45:15] Oh my god.
June Diane Raphael [00:45:17] Really devastating.
Paul Scheer [00:45:19] Let’s go to the audience. And I do have some more information about the novel. I got some other things to share, but we’ll go out here, we’ll see what we have.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:24] And I will say, if you are someone who has read the novels or have more book info, can we get house lights, please raise your hand and give it to us because we don’t. We want to know the truth.
Paul Scheer [00:45:33] All right. What’s your name?
Audience Member [00:45:35] Amanda.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:36] Amanda. Why? Why do you love Netflix?
June Diane Raphael [00:45:39] What?
Audience Member [00:45:41] Oh, it’s it’s it’s so good.
Paul Scheer [00:45:43] It is. All right. Your question?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:45:44] Do you want to do you want to recommend any shows from Hulu?
Paul Scheer [00:45:48] You better watch yourself. They’ll kick you, right the fuck out. That’s a trick question. All right. You, your question.
Audience Member [00:45:55] At one point, Abby talks about how she wants to move to Paris. And then with a very straight face and no further explanation, he said, well, how am I supposed to pursue criminal justice there?
June Diane Raphael [00:46:09] Oh my god, I forgot about that. Thank you so much.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:12] I mean Amanda great. Oh, both both of those elements.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:19] Thank you so much.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:20] Both of those elements. Both Paris and criminal justice never mentioned again. Both of their dreams, deferred.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:27] Criminal justice. I don’t think he knows what those words mean.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:46:31] Nope. I again believe it’s an improvised line.
June Diane Raphael [00:46:35] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:46:36] Okay. Hi. How are you doing? What’s your favorite show hosted by Mikey Day on Netflix?
Audience Member [00:46:46] I have no idea.
Paul Scheer [00:46:47] It’s okay. Now, here’s your question.
Audience Member [00:46:49] My question is, this movie’s based in Mexico. They speak Spanish at some point. Yet the owner of the hotel says a made up word for dick in Spanish and can’t say an actual Spanish word for dick. He’s just like Pino. And what?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:09] Really?
Audience Member [00:47:10] Yeah. The entire time.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:12] That wasn’t someone’s name? Wasn’t he?
Audience Member [00:47:13] No, no, no, no, he was referring to dick.
Paul Scheer [00:47:17] Right, because he’s excited. Like, oh, he has a big dick, right? And it’s like, yeah, yeah.
Audience Member [00:47:21] Like he’s in the pool and the like, the girls are like, oh, where are the guys? And he was like, I prefer Pino. And it’s like my guy. Like the world is your oyster.
June Diane Raphael [00:47:32] Especially because also the they are subtitling the Spanish speaking in the movie. He can say whatever he wants.
Paul Scheer [00:47:41] All right. Yes. Your name?
Audience Member [00:47:43] Jonathan.
Paul Scheer [00:47:44] And your question.
Audience Member [00:47:46] More of a comment. Shep’s iPhone during the, rooster murder scene, it inexplicably works like an old style answering machine because.
Paul Scheer [00:47:54] Oh, right. It played okay. Speaker. Speakerphone.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:47:57] It right answers. It answers on its own and plays out loud.
June Diane Raphael [00:48:02] Thank you so much.
Audience Member [00:48:03] So he can sob in the closet about his grandmother dying.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:06] If I do them, if I if I give the movie a little credit, I think the roosters answered the phone.
June Diane Raphael [00:48:14] I think you’re right.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:15] That’s what I think. I’m assuming the roosters answered the phone just to torment Shep.
Paul Scheer [00:48:22] All right. Your name, your question.
Audience Member [00:48:23] Hello. My name is Yulia. Do roosters lay eggs?
Paul Scheer [00:48:29] Good question. June?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:31] Do we? Do we have a. Do we have a cock expert in the room?
Paul Scheer [00:48:42] Any Pino experts? Any Pino experts? Let me go back over here.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:48:48] The movie’s not concerned with reality like that.
Paul Scheer [00:48:52] Well, here’s what’s really interesting too. And maybe we’ve glossed over this because everything is so confusing. This went from a pretty, like, heightened but kind of real world rom com into fucking, like, Hangover three territory.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:11] You’re right, it skipped part two and went straight to three.
Paul Scheer [00:49:14] And and just changed tones. It’s like, yes, these are the same characters, but tonally this is a comedy?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:22] Ooh, I don’t think so. Wait, you think that this movie thinks it’s comedy? A comedy first?
Paul Scheer [00:49:30] Yeah. She pukes on him.
June Diane Raphael [00:49:31] I think so too. I think they.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:33] I definitely think they have comedy going on, but I mean, like. Yeah, in the sense that I, I don’t know, I think they’re still trying to do a rom com. They just don’t have any of the beats.
June Diane Raphael [00:49:44] I think they let go of ROM and went into like sex and well sex comedy. Like I think they were going for.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:52] American Pie.
June Diane Raphael [00:49:54] Yeah, exactly.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:55] Something like.
June Diane Raphael [00:49:56] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [00:49:56] One one applause.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:49:59] One. One person, one clap.
Paul Scheer [00:50:08] Thank you, Stiffler. Stiffler is over here.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:13] Please don’t point that out. Please don’t point it out. Please don’t look at me. Please don’t look at me. Please don’t look at me.
Paul Scheer [00:50:18] I, I, no, I agree with you. I think I think.
Paul Scheer [00:50:22] A single clap for American Pie.
Paul Scheer [00:50:25] I know this is a movie. I know this is a movie with.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:32] I would love it if from now on, one of our things was that when people enjoyed a joke or something, they all just went. Just one. (Audience single claps) You guys get it. Try and implement it through the night.
Paul Scheer [00:50:49] You all have to make eye contact, though.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:50:51] You have to connect with each other. You’ve got to figure out group mind for the audience. Focus on the tall guy. He’ll. He’ll be your. He’ll be your leader.
Paul Scheer [00:51:03] Wait. I just forgot the. The rom. Oh, this is a movie where I know that there are at least two handjob scenes in this movie. But the first handjob scene made me so uncomfortable where they’re like, yeah, I like this is good. And obviously they don’t like it.
June Diane Raphael [00:51:16] I hated it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:51:17] She tears three layers of skin off of his dick. Oh she is they they appear to have no lubrication whatsoever. And she is cranking down on that thing as if she is. I don’t even know what trying to tear it off his literal body. (Audience single claps, but not good) Ooh. Okay, okay, okay. We’re getting somewhere. This guy gets it. Focus on him now. He’s the leader. You blew it, tall guy.
Paul Scheer [00:51:51] All right, your name, your question.
Audience Member [00:51:52] My name is Aaron. And I was going to ask what we think the name of the animated penis is. But someone here, I think, already gave us the answer. Pino.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:03] Pino, you think the animated penis is called Pino? I don’t think so. Okay. I would love it if that were the case. Ooh, that animated penis, That was tough.
June Diane Raphael [00:52:14] I hate it.
Paul Scheer [00:52:15] I also don’t understand why we needed to see an animated penis. She’s like, give me an inch. And then it just shows how much more. Like the way that the movie portrays that penis is as if she’s.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:28] The cartoon penis, you mean?
Paul Scheer [00:52:30] No, the cartoon penis in my mind. All right, sit with me on this one for a second,
June Diane Raphael [00:52:36] Listening. Listening. Yeah.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:36] Please take your time to explain to the audience how the cartoon penis played out in your mind.
June Diane Raphael [00:52:42] We got. We got all the time in the world.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:44] All night, baby. Netflix is a joke! (Audience single claps, a little better this time) Okay. Okay. You guys. I love watching an audience learn.
Paul Scheer [00:52:55] Nailed it.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:52:57] They didn’t nail it yet. Even though that is a show on Netflix.
Paul Scheer [00:52:59] That’s what I was trying to do. All right.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:04] You guys blue eyed samurai’d that.
Paul Scheer [00:53:11] People aren’t even looking around.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:12] Don’t fall apart.
Paul Scheer [00:53:13] Okay. In my mind, she says, give me just an inch and.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:17] Oh, God.
Paul Scheer [00:53:18] Okay. And Travis goes, got it? And he just makes an inch of his dick hard. And then she says, give me a little bit more. He’s like. And he goes a little bigger.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:30] Well, you’re right that.
Paul Scheer [00:53:31] That’s the way it’s portrayed, right?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:33] Right. That that’s what happens with the cartoon penis. But I think she’s just she’s saying, give me the tip essentially. Right. But but you’re right.
Paul Scheer [00:53:42] I’m just saying, the way that the cartoon is making me understand it is, is that he has tremendous mind control.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:53:50] And and let’s be clear, let’s be clear and think about how impossible this would be. He’s able to just make the tip hard first? I don’t think so. He’s getting the blood just to the tip. Quick, just the tip. Don’t get anything else going.
Paul Scheer [00:54:10] This movie did make me hate sex. It does.
June Diane Raphael [00:54:15] Me too. It’s gross.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:54:16] It makes me mad that I want the animated penis to be on the t shirt.
June Diane Raphael [00:54:23] No way.
Paul Scheer [00:54:25] I don’t know if this makes it any clearer to you all, but I will. I will just tell you this because I realize in my notes the great Molly Reynolds, one of our producers, did write down everything. A Beautiful Disaster is based on the first book of Jamie McGuire’s Beautiful series.
June Diane Raphael [00:54:39] We’re still talking about what this is based on? Have we not made any headway there?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:54:44] Here’s the here’s what I feel like. I feel like I’m watching the movie now. I feel like the show is the movie. And I thought we were wrapping up and I just looked at Paul and we have 45 minutes left. Somehow, somehow, we’ve gone back in time.
June Diane Raphael [00:55:03] Based on the book?
Jason Mantzoukas [00:55:05] If he says novella, I’m going to straight up. I’m going to kill myself Happening style. Oh, okay. With the house lights up. You guys are struggling with the single clap. But I like it anyway. You keep leading. Watch his hat. I will just. I’m not going to look at you. No, them. Yes, them.
Paul Scheer [00:55:29] Obviously you say novel, I say novella. There’s a lot of different opinions out there, but now it’s time for second opinions.
Audience Member [00:55:38] Cold From Prime. We have some opinions that it seems other people don’t share. Though at times stranger than Paul’s childhood. These reviews are by people who care. So let’s read if there are boobies or cursing in this movie, or wigs that look like hate crimes. Typed with love but never a punctuation. Five stars on Amazon Prime.
Paul Scheer [00:56:17] Amazing.
[00:56:20] Beautiful.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:20] Great job.
Paul Scheer [00:56:21] Fantastic. Wow.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:23] Great job.
Paul Scheer [00:56:26] Amazing. All right, here’s the deal, people. This movie just came out a couple of months ago. There’s only 458 reviews. 52% of them are five star. But yep. But all of them suck. So I went to discord and said, I love my discord. This is written by Claire Meachum. “What an honor to witness this. God bless America five stars.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:56:56] Do you think she meant America? This person meant America like Mare? The character, Mare?
Paul Scheer [00:57:01] Yeah. God bless America, the character. Sarah Killer writes “Less Dylan Sprouse ass, but he did say Oooga want to fuck, so it balances out. Five stars.” And then my favorite one of them all by Ian Bruce. “You couldn’t make a movie like this in 2024.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:57:26] Hahahahaha. What?
Paul Scheer [00:57:30] Five stars.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:57:32] Oh. That’s amazing. Ugh, they wouldn’t let you make a classic like this in 24. The woke police wouldn’t let you make this classic.
Paul Scheer [00:57:46] There are a couple of things that are interesting that I wanted to share with you. We talked about the mud scene. And every time you hear the cast talk about this movie, they seem angry.
June Diane Raphael [00:58:00] Again, just one blooper.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:58:01] Also, how often do you hear this cast talk about the movie? Every time you hear the movie, the cast talk about this movie. How much are you tuning into that?
Paul Scheer [00:58:11] Well, I started to go down a rabbit hole. I was like, oh, let me see, you know, I’ll watch a couple of their interviews. Garner called the mud Scene the most challenging to film. “That was two days in real mud, not fake mud. There were rocks.”
Jason Mantzoukas [00:58:26] Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. Let’s unpack that just briefly. What’s fake mud?
Paul Scheer [00:58:33] I guess, like where they would just. Yeah. Make it. Well, you’ll see why she goes. Not fake mud. There were rocks in it and mosquitoes were super drawn to it. And they were laying eggs in it, and it was pretty nasty. And I’m grateful that Rob Estes was in there with me. He’s a great sport, but that was a tough scene for me. Then they cut a lot of it. So that always adds insult to injury. When you spend a lot of time on something and it ends up on the cutting room floor.
June Diane Raphael [00:59:11] I feel for this woman. I feel for this woman.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:59:15] How long is this movie?
Paul Scheer [00:59:17] An hour and, like, 35 minutes.
June Diane Raphael [00:59:19] Four hours and 25 minutes.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:59:20] Because I only wonder. Because here is a. I have a theory as to why there is a single blooper. You have to you. Your movie has to be a certain number of minutes long in order to qualify as a feature length movie. So a lot of times the reason there are bloopers or bits at the end of a movie are because the edit has come in too short to cater to, to fall into that category.
Paul Scheer [00:59:47] Normally under an hour 30. This is an hour 40.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:59:49] It is. Okay, so that’s what I was wondering. I was like, oh, did they just need that one?
June Diane Raphael [00:59:53] Jason, it’s not why.
Jason Mantzoukas [00:59:56] No, I’m trying to help the movie out. I don’t know why. I don’t know why. I think I love the Beautiful series. I think these movies are my movies.
Paul Scheer [01:00:08] Virginia’s real life husband is in the movie. She got married right before she started shooting the movie, as did Dylan. They both are were newly married. They went to go shoot this movie and her husband is in it. She said he’s outside the lucha libre tent.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:00:21] In an English accent? As if he’s at a rent fair in Mexico.
June Diane Raphael [01:00:25] Yeah, I knew it.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:00:27] Couldn’t figure that out.
Paul Scheer [01:00:29] “I had to grab him by the nose and take him out of the frame. My husband and I had a lot of fun with that little cameo. It was his first time acting, so he was nervous. He was rehearsing that stupid song he sings in the movie. Sang it all day and night.” Everything just ends.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:00:45] That’s infuriating, because that’s a perfect example of a thing in the movie. That makes no sense because they’re at a the festival where the where she dresses as the cat. It’s a luchador wrestling match. They’re eating the hot peppers. It’s like a it’s a whole festival. And then she comes across a man who’s acting like he’s at a Ren fair. Yeah, like, hello, milady. And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, what’s this now? How is this part of, like, the Lucha Door Festival that he’s doing medieval stuff? He calls her a wench, and she gets mad at him. Was that it?
June Diane Raphael [01:01:23] Because now I’m wondering, like, does he. He’s not an actor. So was that part in the script or was he just like, I want to be in the movie. This is something I can do.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:01:33] Yeah. Or she was like, babe, you should do your Ren Faire thing.
June Diane Raphael [01:01:36] Exactly. That bit we do that makes me laugh.
Paul Scheer [01:01:40] Now, Jason June, would you recommend this movie?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:01:44] Yes, 100%. Yes. Forever and ever. I love it, I think. Yeah. Okay. We’re back.
June Diane Raphael [01:01:53] No, it. No. No, no, it really, it depressed me. It made me sad. It made me sad for young women. It made me feel like, oh, there’s so much work to do, you know. And will we ever get there? And why are we going backwards? It it made me very depressed.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:02:13] Yeah I agree it was. It’s.
Paul Scheer [01:02:20] To me I loved it, I hated it. And I’m in this zone where I could watch it for the rest of my life and still get something out of it, and also hate every minute of my waking life. I don’t know, it’s like a it’s like a lifetime movie where they are allowed to go hard R. And that’s what I kind of love about it.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:02:42] Yes. That’s what I like, what I like. Yes, it was more successful in the first one. Yeah, in the first one, because the plot a little bit was.
June Diane Raphael [01:02:53] The plot was insane.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:02:53] Crazy. It at least was an archetype I understood. You know what I mean? They’re in college. He’s the bad boy. She’s. The plot is nuts. But I at least understood the architecture. I understood the arch.
Paul Scheer [01:03:09] This is, you know, neither a wedding movie nor a bachelor party movie. It’s, like a chase movie. It’s a movie about the.
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:20] They go to jail. It’s like all this stuff from the first movie. She never gambles. He barely fights all that stuff out the window. All of the elements of the first one, it’s it’s almost as if they’re starting from scratch and they’re like, we’ll find it on the day.
June Diane Raphael [01:03:37] Should we go back to where the source materials from?
Jason Mantzoukas [01:03:39] Yeah.
Paul Scheer [01:03:42] So in 2015. All right. I love it. Thank you to this amazing LA audience! You were fantastic.
