[00:00:30] Hello people of Earth! And hello people of Los Angeles. We are live at Largo to talk about M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Trap. If you don’t know about Trap, well, let me tell you a little bit about it. IMDb describes the film as A father and his teen daughter attend a pop concert only to realize they’ve entered the center of a dark and sinister event.

[00:02:01] That’s a bad logline for this movie. What really happens in this movie is Josh Hartnett is a serial killer, an elaborate plot has been set up to capture him at a Taylor Swift like concert and you would think, oh, well that’s the movie. No. They’re only at that concert for 45 minutes. And the movie is an hour and 45 minutes.

[00:02:30] A lot more movie. But first, I must admit something. I love this movie.

[00:03:32] Jason Mantzoukas: What’s up, jerks? Here we go! Here we go! It’s a Trap! What? How did they not have Admiral Ackbar in this movie? How do we live like this? Come on! It’s a Trap! Um, this was wild. This was genuinely, absolutely, chaotically insane. Watching this movie mere hours ago. I, also, I do think I should tell the people at home that the Etsy t shirt is clearly giving Paul a rash.

[00:04:12] Jason Mantzoukas: It is, it appears to be like, smoldering.

[00:04:16] Paul Scheer: I will tell you, it was worth the eight dollars.

[00:04:20] Jason Mantzoukas: And the carcinogenic application that’s on it. Uh, this was absolutely nuts. And right as it was ending, I found out there was an hour more of the movie.

[00:04:34] Right at the end! And then I was like, now hang on. How can there be an hour left of the movie? They’re leaving the stadium?

[00:04:43] Paul Scheer: That’s right. The stadium is just the appetizer.

[00:04:48] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh yeah, and the second half of the movie where Lady Raven is the star, is the, is the hero of the movie and a detective? What, what are we doing?

[00:05:02] Paul Scheer: Lady Raven goes full Columbo. Oh, wait. Oh, oh. Ladies and gentlemen, June Diane Raphael.

[00:05:59] June Diane Raphael: And I want, and, and let’s bring our guest out immediately because what I want immediately, because what I wanna talk about is the Lady Raven beat and the cadence of Every Lady Raven song. Yeah. Which is, it’s all very slow jams.

[00:06:13] Yeah. , you know, it doesn’t warrant. I have a lot to say. I just want to say.

[00:06:18] Jason Mantzoukas: Or for that age group either.

[00:06:21] Paul Scheer: Before we bring out our guests, I just want to say one thing. I had the absolute pleasure of watching this movie with June in the theater, and June did not know the premise of the film.

[00:06:36] June Diane Raphael: Of course I didn’t.

[00:06:38] Paul Scheer: And as it started to unravel, She looked at me and said, What the fuck is going on? And it was one of the most fulfilling moments in my life. To know that she had no, when Josh Hartnett pulls out his phone in the bathroom stall, It was like, Wait a second. I don’t know what movie she thought we were seeing, but.

[00:07:03] Jason Mantzoukas: Wouldn’t that be ama What an incredible way to experience the movie.

[00:07:07] I wish I had no idea.

[00:07:08] June Diane Raphael: You knew he was a ser You knew he was a serial killer at a big concert. I didn’t know.

[00:07:14] Paul Scheer: It’s in. The tagline of the movie.

[00:07:16] June Diane Raphael: All I knew is we were going to the Americana. We’re going to have dinner at Frida at 5 PM and then go see a seven o’clock movie. And that sounded great. And by the way, I had a fucking great time at this movie.

[00:07:29] I loved it. And I want to say something cause now I’ve seen it on the big screen. I’ve seen it on the smaller screen. I’m going to say this. This movie deserves to be seen on the big screen.

[00:08:13] Paul Scheer: Um, I am so excited to have you here to talk about Trap. Um, did you see, you saw it in the theater.

[00:08:21] Blakely Thorton: I saw it in the theater. I’m a Josh Hartnett apologist though.

[00:08:23] Paul Scheer: Okay, so.

[00:08:24] Blakely Thorton: Like, he’s had me since Hello, since Pearl Harbor. Oh. Since the red carpet of Oppenheimer.

[00:08:30] June Diane Raphael: Yes.

[00:08:30] Jason Mantzoukas: I thought he was absolutely fantastic. And then, in the third act, Allison Pill shows up and just dunks for like an hour. She just is like, watch this.

[00:08:43] BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! And then everything just goes into a another gear and they’re both just, I think, incredible.

[00:08:50] Paul Scheer: This movie is like, it only works because he is such a good actor. And there’s something about his unraveling, which also coordinates with his hair. Because his hair comes down like the, the more teenage version of like the Josh Hartnett that I feel like I first saw.

[00:09:08] Like, so when he gets real frazzled, that what, I don’t know, that part just kind of comes.

[00:09:12] June Diane Raphael: You know what it is, Paull, because I, I. I spent a lot of time with his part and because I think what was happening is that they were initially going for like a dad part. Like I think they were going for a dad hair and trying to not make him look like we all know he looks, he looks fucking great.

[00:09:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Well, I think they were also doing a, like he’s fastidious and OCD. And as he’s coming unraveled, his hair starts to become mussed.

[00:09:44] Paul Scheer: Well anyone who’s that fastidious wouldn’t have that kind of a, a wimpy mustache. I, I feel like you shaved that.

[00:09:51] Jason Mantzoukas: Wow. Wow.

[00:09:52] June Diane Raphael: Be careful.

[00:09:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Cooper, Cooper’s gonna be so pissed.

[00:09:54] Paul Scheer: I’m all on board. I am all on board. I love John. I just felt like that. What are we doing with that mustache? Is that a choice?

[00:10:01] Jason Mantzoukas: So you’re calling him out. You’re saying he can’t grow a mustache.

[00:10:04] Blakely Thorton: Ooh.

[00:10:05] Paul Scheer: I’m saying he’s showing me that he can’t grow a mustache. Like, grow the mustache. I mean, I think actually, though, he’s a great dad.

[00:10:13] Blakely Thorton: He is? Is he, though?

[00:10:18] Paul Scheer: Look, he’s just trying to balance that, that work life balance, right?

[00:10:21] Blakely Thorton: He’s trying to be a modern man. He’s trying to be a modern man.

[00:10:24] Jason Mantzoukas: He is constantly abandoning his daughter. Like, constantly.

[00:10:29] Blakely Thorton: Like a modern man.

[00:10:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes. The movie wants you to think he’s a good dad, especially in the beginning, but he’s constantly like, I gotta go. I gotta go. I’ll be right back. All he had to do to make all of those make sense is I have diarrhea. I have diarrhea. And guess what? Everybody’s going to be like, take all the time you need. I understand completely. I’m having diarrhea again.

[00:10:52] June Diane Raphael: It’s so interesting. I also thought the actress who played his daughter was phenomenal.

[00:10:56] Paul Scheer: I love her.

[00:10:57] June Diane Raphael: Acting in this movie is this like so good, but yeah, I just want to start at the beginning the just the conceit of this concert, which is in broad daylight.

[00:11:07] Blakely Thorton: Um, it was an added show with several cameras.

[00:11:14] Jason Mantzoukas: The concert also has numerous intermissions where they stop down completely so everybody can go out and do concessions and t shirts and then when the show is completely over and they all exit it’s 4pm.

[00:11:30] June Diane Raphael: So there’s a line of ADR on lady Raven’s back as she’s walking into the stadium from her trailer and shh, and it’s, it’s, um, it’s Riley’s line. And she says something like, I’m so glad they added this afternoon concert after the rest of them were sold out. It was such a like, it’s a crazy line.

[00:11:50] Blakely Thorton: Was Riley in on it? I’m so glad dad invited this extra show.

[00:11:57] Jason Mantzoukas: I didn’t even need it.

[00:11:59] Paul Scheer: Independent filmmaking at its finest. I mean, M. Night financed this movie. This is his thing. He’s like, yeah, we’re not going to do night shoots. That’s lights. Oh yeah. We’re going in. We’re going in at noon. Like, like.

[00:12:11] June Diane Raphael: But I’ve truly spent so much of the movie trying to understand, like, the stadium and arena schedule. Like, why did it have to be in the afternoon?

[00:12:19] Jason Mantzoukas: Union. Wait. There’s so many unions at

[00:12:21] Paul Scheer: play.

[00:12:22] I know. Well, she had to, like, so she, like, let’s say this. She did three sold out nights. Great. But then they’re like, oh, unfortunately, 76ers are playing tonight, we can’t move that. Will you do, like, a noon show? Eh, yeah, I guess.

[00:12:38] Jason Mantzoukas: And we can’t pay for any of your personal security. Alright, get rid of them.

[00:12:42] Blakely Thorton: Well, the entire conceit was built on a real thing. A real police Trap, if you will. Where they brought, like, I guess drug dealers in and told them they won Super Bowl tickets and then arrested them at a stadium.

[00:12:53] Paul Scheer: Yes. Yes. This is actually a really interesting story because the way they did it is.

[00:12:58] June Diane Raphael: I have no idea. Well, by the way, when I was searching for the movie today, Paul watched me try to find it on Apple and I was like, T R A What’s the name of this movie? M? Tram? Tram! What was it called? Paul goes, Tram?

[00:13:11] Jason Mantzoukas: How much of the movie Tram did you watch?

[00:13:13] June Diane Raphael: I completely forgot.

[00:13:15] Paul Scheer: So what they did was they brought in a hundred and twelve men and they said, Hey, you won Superbowl tickets, right? And then they had brought in like these fake cheerleaders and the cheerleaders were cops who then like felt up the guys to make sure they didn’t have weapons on them.

[00:13:32] Right? And then, uh, Here’s a balloon and each balloon was color coordinated to what crime they had done.

[00:13:38] Blakely Thorton: The 80s were fucking wild. Insane.

[00:13:42] Paul Scheer: And then they arrested everybody.

[00:13:44] Jason Mantzoukas: Now someone did feel me up in the back.

[00:13:48] Paul Scheer: And I will say, um, that the best, most, like, fuck you part of it was the letter that informed them that they had Super Bowl tickets was signed, uh, by Michael Detnaw, which is wanted, spelt backwards.

[00:14:02] Blakely Thorton: What a dick move.

[00:14:03] Jason Mantzoukas: I love it.

[00:14:04] June Diane Raphael: The cops have too much time on their hands.

[00:14:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:14:06] Paul Scheer: And, and they also were redirected to another guy named Marcus Cran, which was NARC spelled backwards. Um, and I fought the law was the music they were pumping in while these guys were getting all the, like, they really were like, ah, they pulled off the prank of the century.

[00:14:24] Jason Mantzoukas: Because it wasn’t just cops. They were all dads and uncles too.

[00:14:28] Blakely Thorton: You could say it was enTrapped.

[00:14:30] Paul Scheer: I mean, so, I mean, this, this NFL sting is the. Is the real impetus for this movie. I mean, Although there are, I mean, they say 300 cops. There are more than 300 cops. It’s like every cop in Philadelphia is there. Crime is rampant in Philadelphia.

[00:14:53] [00:14:53] Blakely Thorton: Rampant.

[00:14:56] Jason Mantzoukas: We, it was, it was so interesting because they go to such great lengths to like, play it out, to let you linger in it for a while until it’s like, okay, he’s the, he’s this big, the butcher or whatever. And then to establish this, this profiler, right? To establish these two characters that are clearly in some sort of cat and mouse, but have them never speak and never, you never gain any access to the whys or the interiority of what Hartnett is up to at all.

[00:15:25] You are just watching him try and get out of a concert that genuinely, I also would like to leave. So I’m rooting for him. I’m rooting for him to kill his way out of this nightmare.

[00:15:42] Paul Scheer: Here’s what I’m going to say. My bold declaration about this movie is it is a comedy. And the only reason why that profiler is there and why it’s Haley Mills, is because this is a Parent Trap.

[00:15:57] Blakely Thorton: Woo! Wait, is it actually Hayley Mills?

[00:16:00] Paul Scheer: That’s Hayley Mills. I feel like that was an idea that someone said, I go, who do we get?

[00:16:04] Well, Hayley Mills. Like, it’s such a bizarre choice.

[00:16:07] Jason Mantzoukas: I love that.

[00:16:09] June Diane Raphael: Yeah. I mean, we don’t learn much about her. I would love for them to have

[00:16:13] had a conversation. I would love for them to have had more of a something. And also

[00:16:17] it seems, it would trouble me that she is both the profiler of serial killers, but also like in charge of executing such a large scale operation.

[00:16:27] Jason Mantzoukas: She’s not just the profiler. She’s also, I believe, leading the SWAT team.

[00:16:32] June Diane Raphael: Like those should be two very different jobs.

[00:16:35] Blakely Thorton: Also she fails.

[00:16:36] June Diane Raphael: Yes. Miserably.

[00:16:37] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, she’s bad at it.

[00:16:39] Blakely Thorton: Repeatedly. He kills several people in the stadium.

[00:16:42] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:16:42] Blakely Thorton: Gets out of the stadium.

[00:16:43] Jason Mantzoukas: We never go really to them. We never get any much. We never get like, there’s nobody who’d chews her out and it’s like, okay, we’re taking over this jurisdiction. You know, we never get any, we never get any exposition.

[00:16:55] Paul Scheer: Okay. Well we get exposition, but it’s confusing. At one point, when he steals the police headset, they go, Okay, we have some identifying factors.

[00:17:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, yeah.

[00:17:06] Paul Scheer: He is, we’re looking for a man of various builds, red haired, Black males, a 60 year old, or a 30 year old with a tattoo of a bunny on his wrist. That’s, first of all, very specific. They got a tattoo, they got the wrist tattoo?

[00:17:27] Jason Mantzoukas: Also, we have no, we never understand why they’ve even come to that list. We don’t, we don’t get it.

[00:17:35] Blakely Thorton: I love that.

[00:17:37] June Diane Raphael: Well, what I had to make up in my mind, because the movie didn’t offer me this, but later on when we see footage of the abduction of Spencer, Um, we

[00:17:47] Jason Mantzoukas: Which is basically a Silence of the Lambs scene.

[00:17:49] Blakely Thorton: Who is Spencer?

[00:17:50] June Diane Raphael: Spencer’s the man who’s Trapped in another way.

[00:17:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes, on the phone.

[00:17:54] June Diane Raphael: Yes, that’s Spencer. But when we see, we see Josh Hartnett’s hand come out of the van, And pull him in. And I thought, Oh, that must be how they saw the tattoo. Yeah.

[00:18:05] Paul Scheer: It’s black and white security camera footage. From, like, at least 50 feet high, and the van is about 20 feet away.

[00:18:15] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, more. They just had to do enhance four times. I mean, but that’s just they just did four times, or they did zoom in, zoom in, zoom in, enhance, enhance, zoom in, enhance.

[00:18:26] Paul Scheer: It’s such a funny idea to be like, we need, we need authorization to get all these cops because we know that this guy’s going to be at the concert. All right. What does he look like? Well, yeah, he could be a black guy. It could be old guy. It could be a 30 year old guy could have red hair. Could have a scar on his jaw. Um, we don’t know. It could be short, could be stocky, could be lean. Could be.

[00:18:44] Jason Mantzoukas: You know, they don’t say they know he bought two tickets, but they don’t say he’ll be with someone.

[00:18:48] Paul Scheer: Why doesn’t the ticket have information on it?

[00:18:50] Jason Mantzoukas: Like, why are they waiting? Why are they waiting?

[00:18:53] Paul Scheer: That’s how tickets are made, right?

[00:18:54] Jason Mantzoukas: How about this? How about this? Why are they waiting until after the concert to, I guess they want everybody inside. I’m like, they could have gotten him coming in.

[00:19:04] Blakely Thorton: Why was there a paper ticket? It’s 2024.

[00:19:08] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, why wasn’t there any cameras anywhere? I know that we saw a couple of cameras anyway, but this guy pushes a girl down the stairs. You’re telling me there’s not a motherfucking camera on that? What?

[00:19:23] Blakely Thorton: He blew a girl up. He blew a girl up. He blew up a whole fry container and scarred a woman.

[00:19:31] Paul Scheer: And they don’t even show how he did that. He walked I guess he stealthily dressed just as himself, walked into like a frying station, threw all those bottles in and then was back. Like it makes.

[00:19:44] Jason Mantzoukas: There’s a version of this movie where we are, they’re all bad guys and we want him to escape. I want, you know, like we all, we’re all rooting for him in this insidious way.

[00:19:56] And then every time he would go to Spencer in the basement, I’d be like, get fucking kill this guy. Spencer, Spencer’s holding us

[00:20:03] back.

[00:20:04] Blakely Thorton: We know nothing about him.

[00:20:06] June Diane Raphael: There are some choices this movie makes, though, that are so baffling, but also I really appreciate it. Like, I was like, Oh, interesting that Spencer’s not a woman.

[00:20:16] Interesting. You know, most serial killers kill women. And like, this is, there, there were choices the movie made and M Night made that I tip my hat to.

[00:20:26] Paul Scheer: Well, you want to, do you want to know the reason? I mean, his reason, I wrote it down. Oh, no. The reason why he gets the urge is when he sees people who think they’re whole, but everyone is in pieces.

[00:20:43] Jason Mantzoukas: I love jigsaw puzzles.

[00:20:46] Paul Scheer: I’m just like, like if you’re coming up with your serial killer It’s like, huh.

[00:20:52] Blakely Thorton: It’s like Kate Bush lyrics.

[00:20:54] Paul Scheer: It’s like, because they think they’re whole, but I want them to know that they’re not whole. But I’m just getting that from just a glance.

[00:21:02] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh, there is, he has no, like, philosophy.

[00:21:06] He has no, he does not have, especially to the degree that they’re telling us how prolific he is. They should have found him years ago. He’s too basic.

[00:21:19] June Diane Raphael: Well, I have so many questions. I mean, I don’t want to spoil the M night twist, but.

[00:21:25] Paul Scheer: There is no twist.

[00:21:26] June Diane Raphael: Well, there’s a little bit of a twist. There is a little bit of a twist.

[00:21:29] I mean, Alison Pill does know. She is the one who ultimately has set this Trap, or tram, for him. And

[00:21:38] Jason Mantzoukas: It’s a tram!

[00:21:40] June Diane Raphael: Once I went back with that information, I was like, wait, so this is.

[00:21:45] Paul Scheer: But if she set the Trap, then wouldn’t they know exactly what he looks like?

[00:21:48] Blakely Thorton: No, she called anonymously. She broke a ticket in an abandoned house and left it there.

[00:21:54] Jason Mantzoukas: But also, but also.

[00:21:57] Paul Scheer: I think my husband’s a serial killer, but I don’t want to really rat him out.

[00:22:00] Jason Mantzoukas: Here’s what I’m going to say. Here’s what I’m going to say. If Spencer had died, That’s on Allison Pill’s head because she knew it was him. She could have turned him in, but instead she left, she bread crumbed the police.

[00:22:12] Blakely Thorton: I love that.

[00:22:13] Jason Mantzoukas: To be like, figure it out. She’s a fucking psycho.

[00:22:16] Blakely Thorton: I love her.

[00:22:17] June Diane Raphael: She’s truly a psycho.

[00:22:38] Paul Scheer: It would’ve been amazing. Right? And he was like, oh, this guy. He is like, I’m just trying to do it for my wife. I’m just gonna do it for my wife.

[00:22:43] Jason Mantzoukas: I’m so sorry Spencer got away. I know you wanted to eat him.

[00:22:50] Blakely Thorton: Spencer was the pie.

[00:22:53] Paul Scheer: By the way, they got Spencer out quick. Like from that Instagram live to him being released is like 30 seconds. Some girl’s like, there’s a statue on my block. She’s like, talk to your uncle.

[00:23:02] Jason Mantzoukas: I would. I mean, I was out of my mind that Lady Raven live streams a rescue of an abducted man who’s moments away from running out of oxygen and is like what up fam listen if anybody lives near like this was nuts.

[00:23:22] June Diane Raphael: I love that whole sequence when he’s banging on the door and Riley’s screaming like dad. What are you doing? I loved it

[00:23:30] Blakely Thorton: Dad.

[00:23:31] Paul Scheer: My favorite part of that. I want to play it just because it’s so good is Uh, is just reading the comments on the live. I’m like, whoever did that, they, they did it so good. Cause there’s like one thing where somebody just goes. Uh, somebody goes.

[00:23:45] Blakely Thorton: There’s a statue on my block.

[00:23:46] Paul Scheer: Well, yeah, and then somebody’s like, she looks like she needs help like, she doesn’t always looked like it. She also is telling you explicitly, I need help . But look at just the, you know, just look at the, the, the comments. The comments are amazing. Here we go.

[00:31:51] June Diane Raphael: And I felt so much, cause here’s my question about this, this wonderful actor. Is like, I’ve been, I feel like I’ve been in his position before. for where you start at a level where you’re like, this feels real and this feels grounded.

[00:32:03] I’m being truthful right now. And then you’re told to do it more and it’s got to be upped. And then you land at this and there’s no taking it back.

[00:32:12] Jason Mantzoukas: Especially, it’s especially difficult when you’re in a scene alone because you cannot measure against the other person or other people to calibrate. So you are just exposed.

[00:32:24] June Diane Raphael: Yes. It’s also interesting to me that the news is on and says they’re gonna cut to a photo and then there’s just no sound So the news I guess just went silent for other date on that picture.

[00:32:36] Paul Scheer: But he also is like it’s so funny as an actor I say the same thing as I guess he’s in the scene by himself. They put a camera on him like, we’ll just tape this And we’ll just kind of, or Night, the Night, we’ll just kind of walk you through it and you see him like he’s dusting off his shirt, you know, and he, he’s looking like, Oh, they caught the guy. I’m excited. Like you see him like pop up, like, okay, who is it going to be?

[00:32:56] And it’s like, he’s going through so much in that scene. It is. That’s what I’m using as my monologue. Now, uh, when I go into audition for things, I just play a clip of a news cast.

In, when, um, Josh Hartnett and his daughter have been invited backstage and she’s gonna go and, um, you know, dance with, uh, Lady Raven and all this kind of stuff. There is a character where Lady Raven is backstage and a woman runs up the stairs and falls. Wipes out. Falls entirely. That is not part of the scene. They just kept this as the take.

[00:33:35] Jason Mantzoukas: Cause the falling woman had no bearing on the scene’s content.

But what we learn from that fall and why it’s so important is because you see Lady Raven, who’s about to perform for thousands and thousands, turn around and, and, and show us that she cares. Yeah, even in such an intense moment of going on stage and needing a sip of water and making yourself okay.

[00:34:47] She is, she still knows what’s important in life. Yeah, okay. I will, I’ll go on. And I’ll say this. Not necessarily bending down and helping her up. No. I was like. No, no, no. But just looking and seeing.

[00:36:23] June Diane Raphael: So she has a monologue on stage, which I wanted to tie into the rest of her journey, and it was hard to. And I did my best, but it was hard to. But that. But that monologue is about, she says something to the audience of like, I want you to think about everyone who’s hurt you. I want to think, I want you to think about that person, if someone’s hurt you, raise your hand and show me, show me and think about that person and now forgive them.

[00:36:48] Paul Scheer: She says, you have to tell them. You are not responsible, I release you, from, for hurting me.

[00:36:57] June Diane Raphael: And I think she says you’re not responsible for hurting me. Which is like, very strange.

[00:39:22] So she must assume like, and then she’s like, Oh, wait a minute. And then she just. Opens the door like, Oh, I’ll just be like, what’s going on out here? Because, and then they’re fine and the family is fine. And then he ushers them all out and then gives normal dad goodbyes to everybody. He’s like, Hey son, good luck with that science project. Like it really is like so. I was obsessed with the goodbye moment. Him trying to be normal dad in that moment.

[00:39:51] Paul Scheer: After they escaped through a window and down a tree.

[00:39:55] Blakely Thorton: Oh, and the tunnel under his home.

[00:39:57] Paul Scheer: Oh, when did he have time to build that? And no one saw, like, where’s dad? Oh, he’s out, like, literally out back, built, like.

[00:40:05] Blakely Thorton: He built an underground railroad. This motherfucker Harriet Tubman. His own house. And they’re like, whatever. It’s cool.

The mom, Allison Pill, finds out that Lady Raven’s coming and she’s like, quick, let me make some deviled eggs. Let me make a plate. Everyone! This will be sure to please everyone like so many devilled eggs.

[00:46:53] Blakely Thorton: Can I just say, and I’ll just, you know, circle of trust. It was hot. It was hot. I’m short of if he did everything short of killing me. In that scene, I’m like, do it. Yes, daddy.

[00:47:03] Paul Scheer: Oh, I think that that is a moment where you’re like, I’m confused because this is like a shirtless moment and I’m like, Like, well, how I feel about this.

[00:47:13] Great. I think, yeah, felt like we’re all thinking immediately. He looks pretty good. Oh, and he looks good in a way where you’re like, oh, he doesn’t like working at, it doesn’t define him, but he has also like really in shape and like.

[00:47:26] Blakely Thorton: He could carry you, he could carry you over a threshold. Yeah.

[00:47:29] Jason Mantzoukas: Or he’s got murder strength.

[00:47:31] Blakely Thorton: Or like, yes. Over a threshold or into a shallow grave.

[00:47:52] June Diane Raphael: It is what you said before about him. Him and Alison Pill are so fucking great. And that sequence I thought was amazing. It’s a different movie, but it is weirdly connected and intimate and sexy and spooky. Like it is that entire sequence is everything. And again, not in this movie. It exists in a different movie.

[00:48:16] Jason Mantzoukas: But I loved it. And, and I, and I do, I think like, and I do, I think Alison Pill is so phenomenal and so fantastic. And when she does that turn and she starts to be like, she starts to, and he starts to bring everything in super close on both of them. They both become incredible. And the movie is like, I genuinely was like, Oh, I’m I’m, I’m delighted to discover that the third act of this movie is an intense psychological thriller.

I wanted him so horny because he’s like, these are people who’ve been married for who knows how long and they’re having a unique experience together that they’ve never had before. She’s provoking from him a reaction, an emotional reaction that he’s never experienced before. And he’s chopped people to bits.

Like he basically is like, he’s like, I know you think that like eating this pie is going to prolong your life, but I’m going to eat this fucking thing in five bites.

[00:54:10] Jason Mantzoukas: No, I’m sorry, Paul, to disagree, but she has the best line afterwards, which she says, I know. Knowing that it’s poison.

[00:54:22] June Diane Raphael: I guess my point though, is that he’s already been on camera in his white van. He’s already made multiple mistakes before the Taylor Swift ticket stub, which doesn’t have his seat on it or any other identifying information is found.

[00:54:36] Jason Mantzoukas: The movie wants you to think he’s Hannibal Lecter and he’s not. He’s just not. He’s a dummy.

[00:54:40] Paul Scheer: He’s very smart. And then incredibly dumb because he had no plan. And I just think he should have killed everyone.

Because he has that moment where he’s like, the two, those two things can’t meet, or those two things can’t cross. My two lives. Yeah. He starts to talk about his two lives can’t overlap. And I was like, Oh, let them. And then let him kill everybody. Then, then it becomes really crazy. Because Lady Raven is responsible.

They found it in one of his fake houses. They’re fairly certain are his. And then two lines later, she says, They know from the precision of the crime scenes and fake houses. She’s what’s called an organized offender.

[01:01:11] June Diane Raphael: So wait, Paul, here’s my question about, um, I want to talk about the carbon monoxide because it seems so different from his MO. It seems like what he wants to watch is when the lights go out and people’s eyes, you know, he, that’s when he feels peace. So why is.

[01:01:30] Paul Scheer: The carbon monoxide is a fail safe. If shit goes down, I gotta kill this guy, I gotta hit a button and do it quick.

[01:03:42] Audience Member: Firefighters know about carbon monoxide. So clearly that was a training. He reverse engineered what he learned on a training that he probably took a lot of extra trainings during the time of COVID.

[01:03:53] Paul Scheer: Oh, and that’s why though. So So he’s going around as a fireman going, this house is a fire code house. I’ll just move in here like so he’s yeah, this movie’s smart Yeah, you’re you’re yes, you name your question.

[01:04:11] Audience Member: Yeah, I’m Kevin Um, so the most confusing part of the movie to me is when they left the house with Lady Raven and they’re in the car again he’s dressed up like a SWAT figure and he’s surrounded by fans and At one point, Lady Raven gets out of the car, and you think, Okay, he’s screwed at this point.

[01:04:30] But he looks over at some t shirts that are in the shotgun passenger seat. And within, like, five or ten seconds, it seems like he has set up, like, a Scooby Doo like figure in the, like, front seat, and then also slipped out into the crowd before the.

[01:04:45] Jason Mantzoukas: A crowd that is surrounding him. A crowd that is surrounding him and filming him. He goes, and again, you’re right, he’s wearing a helmet. He’s, he’s not even disguised as the chauffeur, he’s just wearing a swat, like a bulletproof vest and a helmet, changes into a baseball hat and a hoodie, and just seamlessly fades into the crowd.

[01:08:30] Jason Mantzoukas: She is the hero of the movie.

[01:08:33] Paul Scheer: Meanwhile, her tour manager’s like, You gotta be in Atlanta tomorrow! You can’t you gotta get some sleep. You can’t. Taylor Swift doesn’t speak after shows because she’s like I perform my I can’t speak. She’s out there solving crimes.

[01:08:48] Blakely Thorton: She’s like this is why Taylor does stadiums and you do arenas, bitch. You’re out here solving crimes like a dummy.

[01:09:02] Paul Scheer: What do you guys anything else anything else we missed.

[01:09:23] Jason Mantzoukas: But I really, I really did at the end of the day because it, it really seems to like set up a world in which Josh Hartnett is some sort of Saw level puzzle chaos, like monster, but I just never knew what he was up to. I never knew what the pieces were about. I wish, I wish I had more insight into the mind of the madman. Not just the fact that boy, does he seem like he’s a great dad.

[01:09:49] Paul Scheer: And he wants to show people that they’re not whole.

[01:09:52] Jason Mantzoukas: Yeah.

[01:09:53] Blakely Thorton: By putting holes in them.

[01:09:56] June Diane Raphael: Um, yeah, I mean, I think that also what I wanted from the movie was I wanted Riley to be in danger at some point. Like I wanted to see what he would do then.

[01:10:07] Jason Mantzoukas: But not only wasn’t, was Riley not in danger. The movie really only is letting you understand that Josh Hartnett is in danger, right? And that in, and all the time he’s away from his daughter, you’re like, It might be, it might be good for Riley that he is just like constantly being like, I left my credit card at the t shirt stand, I have to go back. She’s like, you’re acting weird.

[01:10:30] Paul Scheer: She does call it out a lot.

[01:10:32] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh God, how could you not?

[01:10:34] Paul Scheer: My favorite moment, it’s, it’s a small moment because he’s losing his shit. And when, when that, when that thing comes out of the floor and he’s like, Hey, hey, you want to?

[01:10:45] Jason Mantzoukas: Should we go down there?

[01:10:47] Paul Scheer: You wanna go in this thing? And she’s like, she’s like, the fuck? There could be costumes down there.

[01:10:54] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes, there could be costumes down there.

[01:10:57] June Diane Raphael: Costumes and props. The craziest thing is, yes, he pitches like we could look at a costume cage, but the wildest part of that is at that point, the stairs have like descended all the way down there. Like it’s just an open pit and she looks at him like, are you crazy? Okay, buddy.

[01:11:15] Jason Mantzoukas: And when it closes back up, he looks at it like. Oh, he’s doing, it’s like one of the times when he does like multiple eyebrow work.

[01:11:28] June Diane Raphael: His eyebrows are doing a lot.

[01:11:31] Jason Mantzoukas: He’s got full control of those brows. I loved it. I loved it. I love, but I bet again, that was the promise of the movie where I was like, well, at some point they’re going to get underneath the stage. Right. Nope. I wished, I wanted them to go under there and get to those costumes.

[01:11:48] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, I wish I guess there was a better way out of the stadium that was more fulfilling after all that.

[01:11:54] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes, for them to get to the point where he’s like, so I’m the butcher.

[01:11:57] June Diane Raphael: Yeah, right.

[01:11:59] Blakely Thorton: Hey Lady Raven, I’m the butcher. Put us in your limo. Who has a stretch limo in 2024? Who?

[01:12:05] Jason Mantzoukas: I was gonna say, like, are young pop stars, like, I want a stretch limo, old school, I want Ronnie the limo driver.

[01:12:13] Paul Scheer: She should be on a tour bus. Again, she’s irresponsible traveling. She’s got to be in Atlanta. Um.

[01:12:21] June Diane Raphael: But I truly think this movie does not work at all. And it does, it does. Despite everything that’s been said tonight without Josh Hartner.

[01:12:29] Paul Scheer: I mean, well, this is a good question.

[01:12:30] Jason Mantzoukas: Without a doubt.

[01:12:31] Paul Scheer: I, I think that Josh Hartnett, I think actually everybody is very good and I love the daughter.

Like I’ve been like, fuck Old. That movie is weird. I get it all. I’m like, he’s playing another like, he’s like What do you think of this? And I’m like, Uncle, I like it. I like, went to that thing, I’m like, my uncle’s weird. Now I’m like, my uncle’s really funny. You just don’t get him. That’s how I feel about M. Night now. I’m like, I get it. And now.

[01:13:14] Jason Mantzoukas: I wish, I wish he’d killed the other girl’s mom. Yeah, I wish I wish that’s the thing is he really doesn’t kill anyone that we can’t really doesn’t kill anybody. And that’s the thing we know he has killed, but we really don’t see him really do any damage. So there’s a part of.
