Nate has some Reading Aloud Book Club vets and a first timer on as he welcomes Emily Halpern, Kevin Awakuni, and Ele Woods for the 7th edition of the Book Club series of Reading Aloud in which they discuss Toni Morrison’s novel “God Help The Child. ” They’ll talk about dealing with childhood trauma, what parents do to children, and feeling emotionally distant from the book’s characters. Plus, everyone brings up what they believed to be fantastical elements in the book as they read listener questions. Nate welcomes special guests Kevin Awakuni, Ele Woods, and Bill Savage to discuss Adelle Waldman’s “The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.” in another edition of the Book Club series of Reading Aloud! They’ll talk about the protagonist being intellectually advanced but emotionally immature, the novel’s similarities to The Average American Male, feeling nostalgic of living in New York, and listener’s thoughts on the unlikeable protagonist. Nate kicks things off with the always amazing Jason Mantzoukas as he reads a Tom O’Donnell piece entitled “OK, Maybe Our Apartment Is Too Small For A Bald Eagle” recorded live from UCB-LA. Then, Kevin Awakuni of Skylight Books joins Nate in the studio to chat about the popularity of the “How to Talk to Your Cat About Gun Safety” zine, whether Amazon is spreading the word on books or destroying independent bookstores, what makes a good bookstore, why The Hobbit is underrated, and Dave Eggers’ “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” which leads Nate to read a passage from the best-selling memoir. Finally, Nate’s brother Rob Corddry tells us how he auditioned for the Blue Man Group before he reads Colin Nissan’s piece “It’s Decorative Gourd Season, Motherfuckers” live from UCB-LA.
