Tony Clifton

Tony Clifton was discovered by the late, great comedian Andy Kaufman in 1969, while performing in a seedy lounge in Las Vegas. Captivated, Kaufman engaged Tony to open for him on several occasions, most notably his historic “Carnegie Hall Concert”. It was Kaufman who insisted upon Clifton being hired for a controversial appearance on TV’s “Taxi”. (Tony showed up to rehearsal drunk with two hookers and was thrown off the Paramount lot.) Clifton later starred opposite Jim Carrey in the Andy Kaufman biopic, “Man on the Moon”, shared the stage with R.E.M. in a celebrated Hollywood Bowl performance, and played to capacity crowds in soccer stadiums throughout Central and South America. Clifton is currently at work on a “Duets” album that will feature appearances by R.E.M., Billy Corgan, and other luminaries. His concert film, “Tony Clifton: the Movie”, is set to play the film festival circuit in the coming year.
